ANIMAL FARM

The author

? Eric Arthur Blair 25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950 Pen name :George Orwell, English novelist and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language and a belief in democratic socialism. Homage to Catalonia (1938) Animal Farm (1945) Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)

The origins

is a novel in which the author tells a story using symbolism and figures of speech to tell a story that often has both a literal and figurative meaning.

? Animal farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell published in England on 17 August 1945. ? Totalitarian propaganda can easily control the opinion of enlightened people in democratic countries , which motivated Orwell to expose and strongly condemn what he saw as the Stalinist corruption of the original socialist ideals. ?

Why Is on a farm
? In the preface, Orwell described what gave him the idea of setting the book on a farm: “……I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge carthorse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if only such animals became aware of their strength we should have no power over them, and that men exploit animals in much the same way as the rich exploit the proletariat……”.

The plot
? Snowball's revolution Old Major, the old boar on the Manor Farm, calls the animals on the farm for a meeting, where he compares the humans to parasites and teaches the animals a revolutionary song, 'Beasts of England'. When Major dies two young pigs, the animals revolt and drive the drunken and irresponsible Mr. Jones from the farm, renaming it "Animal Farm". They adopt Seven Commandments of Animal-ism, the most important of which is, "All animals are equal".

THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS
Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal

After the Revolution
? Napoleon's rule Napoleon enacts changes to the governance structure of the farm, replacing meetings with a committee of pigs, who will run the farm. He and the pigs abuse their power, imposing more control while reserving privileges for themselves and rewriting history, villainising Snowball and glorifying Napoleon.

The pigs abuse powers
The pigs elevate themselves to positions of leadership and set aside special food items, ostensibly for their personal health. Napoleon takes the pups from the farm dogs and trains them privately. 'Beasts of England' is replaced by an anthem glorifying Napoleon, who appears to be adopting the lifestyle of a man.

? "No animal shall sleep in beds" is changed to "No animal shall sleep in beds with sheets" when the pigs are discovered to have been sleeping in the old farmhouse. ? "No animal shall drink alcohol" is changed to "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess" when the pigs discover the farmer's whiskey.

? Humanization
Years pass, and the pigs learn to walk upright, carry whips and wear clothes. He abolishes practices and traditions related to the Revolution, and changes the name of the farm to "The Manor Farm“. But Napoleon still announces that he is strongly against the labouring classes of both "worlds".

Animalism Now
? Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. ? Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend . Four legs good, two legs better ? No animal shall wear clothes. ? No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets ? No animal shall drink alcohol to excess ? No animal shall kill any other animal without cause ? All animals are equal,
but some animals are more equal than others

Theme
The Corruption of Socialist Ideals in the Soviet Union ? After the departure of the owner , the pigs establish themselves as the ruling class in the new society. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Danger of a Na? Working Class ve ? Gullible, loyal, and hardworking, these animals give Orwell a chance to sketch how situations of oppression arise not only from the motives and tactics of the oppressors but also from the na? veté of the oppressed, who are not necessarily in a position to be better educated or informed. The Abuse of Language as Instrumental to the Abuseof Power ? In Animal Farm, the pigs gradually twist and distort a rhetoric of socialist revolution to justify their behavior and to keep the other animals in the dark. The animals heartily embrace Major’s visionary ideal of socialism, but after Major dies, the pigs gradually twist the meaning of his words.

Review
? What does a farm stand for? ? Generally Animal Farm stands for any human society, be it capitalist, socialist, fascist, or communist. It possesses the internal structure of a nation, with a government (the pigs), a police force or army (the dogs), a working class (the other animals), and state holidays and rituals. Its location amid a number of hostile neighboring farms supports its symbolism as a political entity with diplomatic concerns

Personal understanding
? I. Decentralization and balances Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We should adopt the principle of decentralization and balances ? II. Problems of Chinese government . Corruption Abuse of power Inequality of public welfare The foreign policy
