He must either give the public what they want, or he must find a new way of singing that will attract their attention. Even when he has succeeded, and his records are sold everywhere, he cannot relax. Then he must work harder than ever to remain popular, because there are always younger singers trying to become famous and to steal some of the popularity. The life of a successful pop singer isn’t easy at all. He can only relax when he is alone, because everything he does is watched and reported in the special newspaper written for the fans. The fans are the most important people in the world for the singer. They buy his records, they go to his concerts, and they make him rich and famous. But they can be very annoying, too. Sometimes their enthusiasm(热情) is so hysterical(歇斯底里的) that they do anything to get a souvenir(纪念品). They steal hankerchief, they tear off buttons, and they even cut off pieces of unfortunate singer’s hair. Many singers have been forced to hide, and some who have not been so lucky as to escape have been stripped(剥) practically naked by their fans. A pop singer has to spend a lot of money on clothes because he must always look smart, or at any rate, different. He must have a luxurious(豪华的) car. And most importantly, he must always keep smiling for the benefit of his public. 36. Pop singer works very hard ___________. A. to get attention B. to stay popular C. to get more money D. to sell more records 37. The underlined word “annoying” in the second paragraph means__________. A. lovely B. friendly C. boring D. angry 38. A pop singer has a lot of clothes in order to keep himself _________. A. smart and the same B. smart and different C. healthy and young D. rich and strong 39. A suitable title for this passage might be _______. A. The Way to Become a Pop Singer B. The Fans of the Pop Singer C. The Pop Singers D. The Success of Pop Singers B If you are human, you can’t help but experience times when everything seems

to be going wrong and you feel as if your life is completely out of control. It is during those “down times” that words of encouragement from family, friends, co-workers or even strangers can lighten your spirits. It is also during those times that destructive words can sink you deeper and deeper into depression. For example, consider this story about a group of frogs who were traveling through the woods when two of them fell into a deep pit(坑). All of the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two unfortunate frogs they would never get out. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop. Finally, one of the frogs took heed of what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again the crowd of frogs shouted at him to stop the pain. The more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it to safety. When he got out, the other frogs asked him why he continued to jump when they were all shouting at him to simply quit. The frog explained to them that he was a little bit deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. Every time you have a chance to say either something positive or negative to another human being, do choose the chance to say something positive! Don’t let those opportunities get away from you. Your words have a large amount of power. Use them wisely. You really never know just how much they can mean to someone else. 40. The first paragraph tells us that words play an important part especially when _______. A. we stay with our family, friends and co-workers B. we hear strangers say something to us C. we get through hard times in life. D. we make some big mistakes. 41. The underlined phrase “took heed of”has the similar meaning with “_____” A. acted according to B. had some doubt C. held on to D. got used to 42. The more they shouted, the harder he jumped and finally he made it to safety. That’s because_______________. A. he struggled to prove that they were wrong B. he thought they were encouraging him C. he was angry with what they said D. he didn’t want to let them down. 43. After reading the passage, readers should learn a lesson that _________. A. we can use encouraging words to help others out B. having a positive attitude is important in life C. never give up until we win D. we must believe in ourselves rather than others C Some people don’t mind being fat. Other people can keep slim(苗条) without any effort. But a lot of people do put on weight and don’t like it. The question is, what can they do about it? Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.

A helpful way is food choosing. But what sort of food should you choose? Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don’t eat anything until they become weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You’ll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren’t cheap. Another says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs, and apples with their skins on which are hard for your stomach to digest(消化),the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food. For most of us these methods are too extreme(极端的). The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrates(糖类) that means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice, and so on and eating anything else you like. It’s straight forward and often quite effective. Still others like to be more scientific. They get a table, which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast leg of lamb gives you 330 calories and a 50 gram helping of pudding gives you 130 calories. 44. There seems nothing wrong with exercise except that __________. A. it makes you sweat B. it’s hard work C. it tires you out D. it makes you eat more 45. According to the passage, the best way to keep slim is _________. A. exercising B. hunger C. food-choosing D. eating milk and bananas 46. The practical method suggested here means __________ . A. sticking to bananas B. not eating many carbohydrates C. eating as little as possible D. eating things that are hard to digest. 47. Which of the following do you think is the best title for the passage? A. Don’t Eat Too Much B. Various Ways of Losing Weight C. Ways to Keep Fit D. Food and Health D The city of X is internationally known for sports, catering for the needs of both professional and amateur sportspeople as well as those that seek to maintain an active lifestyle. The city promotes well-being by offering its citizens lots of opportunities for sports, both indoors and outdoors throughout the year. Sports clubs in X organize activities in a wide arrangement of sports. The most popular are ice hockey and football, and the list covers well over one hundred other sports. X’s large green areas including the Central Park and the sea offer ample opportunities for physical activity: walking, running, jogging, hiking, bicycling, roller skating, swimming, boating and fishing. The city claims 50,000 amateur fishermen, more than any other capital city in Europe. The city organizes a number of community sports activities and maintains a variety and lots of sports facilities. These facilities include more than 200 km of tracks for walking, jogging and running, close to 200 km of ski tracks in winter, some 30 indoor sports halls, some 10 indoor ice rinks and 80 outdoor ice rinks, 14

indoor swimming halls and 2 outdoor pools in summer, close to 30 beaches, and 12,000 boat berths (泊位). Ice Park is a downtown winter-time skating rink on Railway Square, complete with skate rental (出租) and a heated café. The local people are active bicyclists especially in summer. X’s bicycle path network covers 1,000 kilometers inside the city limits. The city promotes bicycling with many services, including a Journey Planner for Cycling. One of the unusual sports here is ice swimming, and X even hosts ice swimming world championships. The city maintains some 15 ice swimming sites throughout the city. Campers find a convenient site inside the city: Rastila Camping is one of the most popular camping sites in this country, located by the seaside and accessible by underground. The Nuuksio National Park offers camping in wilderness just half an hour from the city by car. The city of X’s sports function is managed by the Sports Department. The department provides and maintains sports facilities and organizes activities. The department also rents facilities for sports, conference rooms and saunas. 48. According to the passage, which of the following can best describe X? A. Active and energetic. B. Beautiful and interesting. C. Great and proud. D. Convenient and modern. 49. We can know from the passage that people in X ________. A. enjoy bicycling around the country B. are fond of different sports C. especially like winter sports D. appreciate a special way of country life 50. X is most probably the city of ________. A. Toronto B. Sydney C. New York D. Helsinki 第二节:(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白出的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选 项. Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒). 51 Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green – eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money. 52 Those given a little

were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others – but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. 53 . But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not

bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” 54 They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires. 55 .It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were

more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner. C. As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood.” D. It is not true that British people are born jealous of others` success. E. Some were given a little, others a great deal. F. But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them. G. Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem.
