Xxxxx Xx CPU401-01 Essay1 : Final Draft No TV
Today, almost every family has at least one television in their house. TV is beneficial because people can play games, watch movies, a
nd use it to relax from stress. Also, there are many educational channels on TV where people can get a lot of information from. In Italy, protestors ask people to stop watching TV for an entire weekend. They believe TV is a waste of time because there is nothing to learn, it only contains poor quality programs and causes humans to become dull and isolated. I disagree with these Italian protestors. I believe that TV can be educational and give people more topics to talk about with each other. If the government could regulate TV programs, it would help reduce the negative effects on people.
The Italian organization was trying to fight this issue because they hoped the poor quality of TV programs could be prohibited or improved. In my opinion, not all TV programs are poor quality. Many of them are educational. TV is a great source where we can gain information and knowledge. TV helps us to absorb and learn some specific skills and information, as well as understand the world better. For example, I like to watch the news and the Discovery Channel because it helps me learn something new. Sometimes, I will watch the news on NBC or CNN. It keeps me updated on the news around the world, which is helpful for my education. I am majoring in International Business and often use the information I gain from TV in my class. For example, on CNN, there was news about an employee doing something unethical to his company. The employee was
embezzling money when his boss was out of the country. It applies to my International Comparative Management class, because I used this topic in my international class to describe and address the issue on how to avoid fraud. In addition, I can also learn some interesting facts about the world. On Discovery Channel, I learned about animal habits, types of bacteria, some insects that we need to be careful around inside or outside of the house, and different cultures around the world. Before I watched the Discovery Channel, I had no idea that there was an organism called the house dust mite, which lives in beds. After we watched this program, my brother and I lifted the bed up and discovered dust mites on the back side of the bed. It looked tiny, like a red bean. However, we killed them immediately.
The benefits of watching TV is not only to obtain knowledge, it also creates different topics to help us communicate with each other. The Italian protestors think TV causes dullness and isolation; however, I believe it helps improve people’s relationships. For example, I barely talk to my brother, but when we watched TV together we talked a lot. We watched the animation program One Piece and we discussed the TV program for half the day. Usually, we talk about the characters and plot for the story. We will guess if the enemy will join the group, and predict what will happen to the plot. TV allows us to discuss some common interest and it improves our relationship.
Watching TV will also make friendships better because if we have the same topic, we can discuss the whole day long and strengthen the relationship. In high school, when I wanted to be familiar with new students, I started creating topics from TV and tried to
chat with them. For example, when I was junior, there was a new student named Lillian. She was quiet and shy. I was sitting next to her and suggested her to watch an American TV drama called The Vampire Diaries. After she watched it, we started discussing about the actors and the point of view about love. From there, we started to understand each other and became very good friends. Watching TV brings up different topics that we can share with each other. TV will not cause humans to become isolated like the protesters have mentioned because we can use the topics from TV to connect with others.
I do not agree that we should turn off the TV completely, but the protest of TV is a good idea because it helps the public to look attentively at programs. Nowadays, there are many choices of TV programs. Some of them might be poor quality and contain elements such as smoking, violence, bad words, sex, and other elements that might cause negative effects on children. For example, when children see smoking or hear bad words on the TV programs, they might think it is healthy and learn from that. When my friend was watching TV with her child, the TV drama showed a handsome guy who is smoking. My friend’s child started acting like the guy on TV because he thought the guy was cool. It is especially not good for children because they are now in the learning stage and the things they watch might influence their behavior. I think the meaning of the protest is not to make people stop watching TV forever. Instead, the protest is focusing on how the government can be stricter on the TV programs. If the government can help label the shows, the public can make regulations on what they watch. In Taiwan, my home country, I know that in some of the animated shows (such as One Piece); if there is any smoking they will remove that part. Also, the parents could pay more attention to what their
children are watching. The purpose of doing this is because they want to prevent the negative effects that can influence children. In my opinion, people still need TV. One of my relatives is teaching her 2 year old baby to learn words by watching preschool educational TV programs or DVDs. As long as we restrict some of the TV programs, are aware of what we watch, and regulate the time we spend on TV, TV is a good thing in our life.
TV is not just mostly a waste of time because we can watch TV to absorb knowledge by watching beneficial programs, and improve the relationship between family and friends. TV will not cause humans to be isolated and dull as long as we have good control on TV programs. The idea of protesting TV is a good idea to attract the government’s attention to making restrictions on TV programs, but it is not necessary to completely stop watching TV. Overall, if the government regulates the TV programs and increases the quality of the shows, I think people can gain benefits by watching TV.
