Looking 36 I remember the time in a baseball field passing the team that we had just 37 . We shook their hands and said, "Good game!" It is 38 to do that when you win! When you lose, you have a tendency(倾 向) to slap (拍) the hand - instead of shaking it - and 39 the ground instead of the eyes. This is not only true for an eight-year-old; it is true for adults, too. A few years ago, in a softball league, we lost 15 games! And we thought it was 40 . But during the " Good game" handshake after each 41 , I looked each player in the eyes and shook their hands. I couldn't look my opponents (对手) in the eyes and congratulate them on a good 42 when I was eight. Somehow I took the loss as a 43 on my self-worth and felt my self-confidence had been slapped; 44 I did what most eight-year-olds do and I slapped the opponents' hands, not giving them the satisfaction of a shake. I was wrong to do this. I'm happy today as a(n) 45 that I have learned this 46 : There is something to be said for losing well. 47 it is a baseball game or an important examination, you can 48 a lot about a person by how they deal with defeat. The person who deals with defeat as an 49 blow is not allowing the event to define (定义) him, while someone who cannot 50 defeat is allowing the event to 51 his self-worth. In my opinion, when you 52 in something- though it may be 53 ― look at your opponents in the eyes, and shake their hands in a 54 way as you say, "Good game!" 55 to allow the event to define your life. You might find yourself winning the next game. 36. A. about B. before C. back D. round 37. A. taught B. met C. caught D. defeated 38. A. easy B. difficult C. proper D. bad 39. 第三部分:阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 40 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 30 分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 A、B、C、D 中选出最佳选项。 A The day was Thankful Thursday. It's a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. Thursday has become our day to go out and make a positive contribution. On this particular Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do. At noon, I drove to a McDonald’s with my daughters because they kept complaining that they hadn’t had enough to eat at breakfast. There we saw some homeless people in the street and we bought lunch for them. We were about to complete when we found a small woman standing at the corner, asking for change. We handed her some food, and then started to head home. Suddenly from the mirror of the car, I saw the woman waving at us, so I had to turn around and stopped where the small woman stood. She walked to our car, and said, "Thank you, lady! No one has ever done anything like this for me before." I replied, "Well, I'm glad that we were the first." Feeling uneasy, and wanting to move the conversation along, I asked, "So, when do you think you'll eat your lunch?" She just looked at me with her huge, tired brown eyes and said, "Oh, honey, I'm not going to eat this lunch." I was confused, but before I could say anything, she continued. "You see, I have a little girl of my own at home and she just loves McDonald's, but I can never buy it for her because I just don't have the money. But you know what…tonight she is going to have McDonald's!" I don't know if the kids noticed the tears in my eyes. So many times I had questioned whether our acts of kindness were too small to have effect on those poor people. Yet at that moment, I realized the truth of Mother Teresa's words: "We cannot do great things — only small things with great love." 56. The author drove to a McDonald’s to ______.

The author finally realized what she did was of use to the poor. B. The author would stop doing her acts of kindness to the poor. C. The author’s daughters found their mother cried at the end of the day. D. The author’s daughters would make friends with the woman’s daughter. 59. What would be the best title of the passage? A. Of course the common methods are always proper (合适的) diet and exercise, which not only work in weight loss but also keep a body healthy. Of course you’ve heard this before ― the challenge is to follow through. Others have lost weight by following these simple guidelines, and so can you. Set small, practical goals. Do extra exercise in addition to your regular program. Park at the far end of the parking lot and walk; take the stairs instead of the lift. Healthy foods are an important ingredient in losing weight. Eat low-fat, high-fiber foods such as salads and vegetable pastas. Choose foods that you like. Learn to prepare healthful, low-calorie foods that taste good by checking healthy cook books for new recipes. Eating well doesn’t have to mean eating dull. Eat smaller more frequent meals. This way your body starts to increase its metabolism (新陈代谢) so that calories are burned faster. Also mini-meals can prevent overeating.

Plan ahead and keep a food diary. Keep the fridge stocked with healthy foods such as vegetables and fruit and you’ll be less likely to run out for high-calorie, high-fat junk food. This will help you know where you can improve your diet. 60. The underlined words “stick with it” in the third paragraph can best be replaced by “_________”. A. put it in a place carelessly B. continue doing it C. finish doing it quickly D. give up doing it 61. What is the best title for the passage? A. How to lose weight B. How to cook healthy foods C. How to exercise to lose weight D. How to eat to lose weight C Recently a man came to me, because he was told that there is fluid(积液) around his heart. After trying many drugs which were of no use to reduce the fluid, the doctor told him the only other choice was to have an operation. He refused because he knew that every illness has a mental cause and that if he had the operation but did not clear the mental cause, the fluid would return. At last, he searched the Internet to find a metaphysical healer(玄学治疗师), and he found me. The mental cause of his disease was an experience of breaking up five years ago with several friends, whom he had known for over twenty years. This experience broke his heart. Not knowing how to “mend” his broken heart, his body created a “repair” by surrounding his heart with fluid to protect it from the sad feelings. Our work focused on reminding him of the feelings of being loved and forgiving his friends. Months later, his he arts was mended and the fluid disappeared. He left my office after the final session with a smile on his face and a spring in his step. The key is: to create a healthy body, you must be healthy not only in body, but also in mind.

To be mentally healthy, you need to build up strong relationships. Creating strong relationships will insure that you are accompanied by a network of loving persons. It is important for building a support system that lifts your spirits. Even when you are alone, you will not feel lonely or upset. Strong relationships are not spaceships——they are not hard to build. 64. In order to cure his illness, which of the following ways did the patient try? ① taking many medicines ② having an operation ③ seeing a metaphysical healer ④ visiting different doctors A. ①③ ②④ B. ①③ ② C. ① ③ D. ② ③ 65. Which of the following statements about the fluid is TRUE? A. The fluid was once cleaned, but it returned later. B. The man’s body created the fluid as a protection. C. The man’s heart was damaged because of the fluid. D. The fluid was good for the man’s heart as a protection. 66. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Loving others will keep you in good spirits. B. Heart illness can be cured without operation. C. Spiritual health is necessary for physical health. D. Creating strong relationships will keep you healthy. 67. Which of the following views may the writer agree to? A. Old friendship is easy to lose. B. A good friendship is a useful medicine C. The best doctor is your own body D. It needs many efforts to build relationships D Book clubs are a great way for adults to get together, have some fellowship, and have intellectual(智力的)conversation. Sure, book clubs may seem more popular to women than men, but I know plenty of fantastic men who love their“book clubs”just as much as I do! So why are we not getting our kids to take part in these types of activities more? Reading is the biggest push in education today. If our kids do not or cannot read, the future of this country will be in jeopardy. Educators are working overtime, round the clock, trying to teach kids to read. Think of a strategy(策略)to make a child interested in reading? The school systems are doing it. But all students should be enrolled(加入)in some sort of reading class based on their reading needs. And we can do plenty about this at home! If you are busy and do not have the chance to stay at home with your child, then read to them every night before bedtime. Let them touch the books, hold the books, eat the books if they want to! Any interaction(互动)a child has with a book is good and should be made to be a positive thing. Find a couple of friends with children in your age group and get them together

once a month, just like the adults, and seat them in a circle with a pile of books. Do not expect them to discuss which characters they like or hate, instead, have them “play” together with the books. As they get older, have them read to each other. If we make reading fun and part of what they do with their friends, we still have a chance to teach our future leaders how to be good readers! 68. The first paragraph intends to tell us that ________. A. we’d better encourage our kids to join the book clubs B. many parents get together with their children in book clubs C. women love book clubs as much as the men D. children shouldn’t take part in too many activities 69. The underlined phrase“in jeopardy” (in Paragraph 2)can best be replaced by “_________”. A. in common B. in peace C. in trouble D. in place 70. According to the third paragraph, the author thinks it is good for children to ________. A. discuss what kinds of books they like best B. become familiar with each other through reading books C. become more positive to make friends D. enjoy doing anything just with a book 第二节: (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 Handwriting can make or break the first impression. That was the time you returned home. As usual, it would take me half an hour or even longer to fall asleep again, and the following day I would have to work sleepily. As a result, I would not be able to concentrate on my work and feel rather tired when the day’s work was over. So I have no choice but to complain to you about it and hope you can try not to make so much noise at midnight. Or you could lay a carpet on the floor to reduce the noise. Thank you very much! Best wishes, Your neighbor downstairs

M: May I take a look? Hmm... it says it was checked out on register four — that’s Heather. She’s new on staff, so she probably didn’t know about the sale. I’m very sorry about that. Never think about your age, it’s not too late to make your life more interesting. I know a housewife who became a famous industrial designer; I know a retired electrical engineer who has become a highly paid artist. Get over the idea that you are too old to go back to college. I know a man who entered medical school at 70. He got his degree with honors and became a top doctor. Another man went to law school at 71 and is now an active lawyer. Even if you are getting on in years, staying young is easy for those who live for the future. You can do it if you care enough to try. Keep your mind alive and active; this is the key to staying young, and it will certainly work.
