Unit 4 PYGMALION
第一部分 《金色教案》教学设计说明 About topic the structures 单元话题和 结构 the and 本单元的主题是通过分析《卖花女》中各个人物的性格,使学生理解:人 的语言和行为受其社会地位和环境的影响, 但是通过后天的努力, 是可以 改变现状的。 鼓励学生要勇于改变自我, 不能满足于现状,充分挖掘自 己的潜力。

本单元语言功能项目是:推测,情绪,判断和评估。 本单元语言结构项目是“复习过去分词作状语” 。 本单元还要求学生学习写作“创造性写作:戏剧“皮格马利翁”的一幕” 。 《金色教案》教学设计在单元课时划分上与课本保持一致,即“阅读课、 知识课、运用课三课时/三课型划分” 。但在实际教学过程中,建议教师依 据学生基础、教学条件、学校安排的因素,对课本、对《金色教案》教学 设计重新划分课时,裁剪、拼接使用提供的材料,以便“物尽所用” ,达 到最佳教学效果。教师也可以参照《金色教案》提供的“实际教学过程课 时划分建议”进行教学。 Period 1 Reading 阅读课 Warming Up 课本是通过图片引出希腊神话故事 Pygmalion,让学生有一 个初步印象; 并通过问题二打开思路, 为以后学习剧本和理解剧情做好了 铺垫。教师也可以采用本书 Warming up by leaning about Pygmalion 进行热身教学。 Pre-reading 课本在此帮助学生通过电影《窈窕淑女》了解 Pygmalion, 激发学生的阅读兴趣,教师也可以以 Pre-reading---about My Fair Lady 进行预读/读前教学。 Reading 是一个剧本。故事讲述了一位来自社会下层语言粗俗的卖花女, 偶然遇到社会上层的皮克林上校和锡金思教授的情景, 通过他们之间的对 话和各自具有的代表性语言, 突出本剧主题: 人的语言和行为都受他社会 地位和环境的影响,但是通过后天的努力,是可以改变现状的。鼓励学生 要勇于改变自我,不能满足于现状,充分挖掘自己的潜力。教师可以参考 本书提供的如下程序进行课堂教学: Reading for forms,Copying and

making sentences,Transferring information,Closing down by having a dictation。 Period 2Learning about language 知识课 Learning about Language 分为两部分,Discovering useful words and collocations 是本单元的词汇练习题, 训练学生在语境中理解词汇的能 力, 并要注意在运用过程中动词, 名词形式的变化。 Discovering useful structures 是本单元的语法练习题,着重复习过去分词做状语的用法。 教师可以参考本书提供的如下程序进行课堂教学: Warming up by looking for the Past Participle as the Adverbial,Learning about the past participles used as the adverbials,Correcting and completing, Closing down by putting on a short play。 Period 3 Using language 运用课 Using Language 部分的阅读与表演是本单元剧本的第二部分。剧情注重 描写了卖花女为了改变自己的命运, 来到教授家要求学习规范语言。 教授 看到她衣着脏乱,举止粗俗,不想教她,但为了和上校打赌来证明其语言 观及教学能力, 收下卖花女。 教师可以参考本书提供的如下程序进行课堂 教学: Warming up by learning more about PYGMALION , Reading and acting,Copying the collocations, Acting a play,Closing down by learning to act。 实际教学过程课时划分建议 Period 1 将 Warming Up、 Pre-reading、Reading 和 Comprehending 整合在一起 上一节“阅读课” 。 Period 2 将 Learning about language 和 Workbook 中 的 USING WORDS AND COLLOCATIONS、USING STRUCTURES 整合在一起上一节“语言知识课” 。 Period 3 将 Using language 设计为一节包括听说读写单项技能或组合技能训练的 “综合技能课(一) ” 。 Period 4 将 Workbook 的 READING AND LISTENING 和 TALKING 整合在一起上一节“ 听说课” 。 Period 5 将 Workbook 的 LISTENING TASK、 READING AND WRITING TASK 和 SPEAKING TASK 整合为一节“综合技能课(二) ” 。 第二部分

Warming up by leaning about Pygmalion Pygmalion Pygmalion (1938) — the non-musical film adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's 1913 stage play Phonetic s Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet with Colonel Pickering that he can turn a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle into a lady within three months. To do so, he must transform her thick-acc ented voice, by coaching her to speak proper English, teaching her manners, and drilling her so she will be educated. “We were above that in Convent Garden? I sold flowers. I didn't sell myself. Now you'v e made a lady of me; I'm not fit to sell anything else.” “I'm a good girl, I am.” At a tea party, in her first public testing, she blurts out, “Not bloody likely.” However, she makes a spectacular debut at a society ball proving him right. The movie drastically diverges from Shaw's play at the end by indicating that Higgins falls in love with Eliza. This is really not a love story. 2. Pre-reading---about My Fair Lady

A priceless classic, My Fair Lady has become one of the most popular musicals of all time. Based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion, the film swept the Academy Awards. 《窈窕淑女》可谓无价经典之作,是有史以来最受欢迎的音乐剧之一。该片以萧伯纳 1913 年的剧作《皮格马利翁》为蓝本,夺得了多项奥斯卡奖。 It tells a tale of a waif who was educated into being a lady. 该片讲述一个流浪者被教育成一位淑女的故事。 Egotistical linguist Professor Henry Higgins (Oscar winning Rex Harrison) bets his friend, Colonel Hugh Pickering, that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) into a lady in time for an important society ball. 自负的语言学教授亨利·希金斯(奥斯卡奖获得者雷克斯·哈里森饰)同他的好友 休·皮克林上校打赌, 他能及时将伦敦穷人区的卖花女伊莱扎·杜利特尔 (奥黛丽·赫本饰) 变为一位淑女,以便她能参加一个重要的社交舞会。 His gamble could pay off but the spirited Eliza is more of a handful than the Professor could have predicted. Professor Henry Higgins: No, Eliza, you didn't “say” that, you didn't even “say” that, now every night before you get into bed, where you used to say your prayers, I want you to say “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain” fifty times. You'll learn to get much further with the Lord if you learn not to offend His ears.

Eliza Doolittle:

I sold flowers; I didn't sell myself. Now you've made a lady of

me, I'm not fit to sell anything else. Mrs. Higgins: However did you learn good manners with my son around? Eliza Doolittle: It was very difficult. I should never have known how ladies and

gentlemen really behaved, if it hadn't been for Colonel Pickering. He always showed what he thought and felt about me as if I were something better than a common flower girl. You see, Mrs. Higgins, apart from the things one can pick up, the difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated. I shall always be a common flower girl to Professor Higgins, because he always treats me like a common flower girl, and always will. But I know that I shall always be a lady to Colonel Pickering, because he always treats me like a lady, and always will. 3. Reading for forms It is unlikely that you will understand 100 percent of the vocabulary in the text, especially at a first reading. Use first the context and then your own knowledge of t he subject to help you guess the meaning of unknown words. Read the text to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, blacken the predicates, darken the connectives and underline all the useful collocations. 4. Copying and maki ng sentences Why learn collocations? ? ? ? Your language will be more natural and more easily understood. You will have alternative and richer ways of expressing yourself. It is easier for our brains to remember and use language in chunks or blocks

rather than as single words. You are asked to read the text to find and copy all the useful collocations. You may make your own sentences with each of these collocations.
