Activity 1 Fast reading
1.Activity Aim:make Ss have a brief understanding of the passage 2.Teaching Method:students-centered practice Step 1.Warming up. Answer the following questions: 1. What would happen if you lost one or two of your senses? 2. Do you believe in people having the "sixth sense"? 3. Do you believe that our senses have strange functions? Step 2. Reading strategy: read a story There are different types of stories. Stories have basic elements as follows: (5Ws) What happened; When it happened ; Where it happened; Why it happened; Who was involved in the event. A story with a climax or a surprise ending is usually more eye-catching. Step 3. Fast reading: Go through the passage as quickly as they can and try to find answers to the following questions: 1. What is the story about? 2. What was the weather like outside the station? 3. How could the old man tell that Polly was young?

2. Teaching Method :students-centered practice In the morning Polly found the city was already in a grey mist. Once out in the street, she walked quickly towards her usual bus stop. once conj. 一旦...就 该句是状语从句的省略结构,相当于 Once she was out in the street. Once, if, when, while, until, unless, although 等引导的从句,当主从句的 主语一致,且从句中含有系动词 be 的某种形式时,从句可以省略主语 和 be。 E.g. Once he arrives, we can start. Once (it is) published, the dictionary will be very popular. Once (he is) caught, he will be punished. Once finding somewhere to live, I'll send you my address. He often makes mistakes when speaking English. [巩固运用] Fill in the blanks: 1. Once__________ (work) out, the plan must be carried out. 2.When __________ (tell) the truth, he lost his mind. 3.Unless __________(make) the most of, time will not be enough.

Too nervous to reply, he stared at the floor. 3) that far that adv. 那么 A fog this bad is rare. that (或 this) 在此处等于 so,意思是“那么”或“这么” ,修饰形 容词或副词。 E.g. He is not that honest. Can hard work change a person that much? Can you jump this high? [巩固运用] I don't think Jack is ______ foolish. He is really a clever boy. A. quite B. fairly C. that D. rather 3. She could feel her heart beating with fear. Polly found herself staring up at the face of an old man with a beard. 句中 v-ing 作宾语补足语 E.g. Peter, who was usually shy, found himself talking to the girls. He could feel his body trembling with fear. When he came to life , he found himself surrounded by his relatives. When I returned, I found my bike stolen. 4. Now she wanted to run, but fear held her still. hold+ n. +adj. / adv. (宾补) 使保持某种状态 E.g. Could you hold the door open for me, please? His speech held them silent. They held their heads high. It took three strong men to hold him down. (把他给按住了) 5. It gives me the chance to pay back the help that people give me when it's sunny. pay back... E.g. I'll pay you back tomorrow. (偿还) She is thinking about how to pay back the support from her friends. (回报) We should do what we can to pay back our parents.
