Unit 2 Heroes—Lesson 4 Superhero
Teacher: Topic: Superhero Type of lesson: Reading and Reading Strategy Period 1&2 Teaching aims: 1. Ss will learn to read and understand a text by predicting, skimming and scanning. 2. Ss will learn to develop strategies for working out meaning when reading. 3. Ss will successfully practice giving and asking for information based on what they read. Teaching aids: Computer; Overhead projector; Handouts. Teaching Procedures: Period 1: Reading Steps Lead-in Teachers’ Activities 1. Show a video from the movie Superman and ask the Ss to guess who is the superhero we are going to talk about. 2. Ask the Ss “Do you know who is the actor?” “What do you know about Christopher Reeve?” Ask the Ss “What do you think the article will talk about?” 1. Ask Ss to read the text for the first time to tick out the topics mentioned on the handout through pair-work.. 2. Ask Ss to present their answers one by one. 3. Ask Ss to match the topics with the paragraphs. Students’ Activities 1. Watch the video and answer the question. 2. Think about the questions raised by the teacher. Make prediction about the text according to the title. 1. Read the text and tick out the topics of the text. Ss may have a discussion with partners. 2. Compare their list with teacher ’s and match the topics with the paragraphs. 1. Read the text for the second time to find out the information. Ss can do pair-work.

Period 2:Reading Strategies Warming up Reading StrategiesWorking out meaning Ask Ss to recall what they remember about Christopher Reeve’s story. 1. Ask Ss how to deal with new words while reading and introduce to them the Reading Strategy-Working out meaning. 2. Take “get involved with” for example to show how to work out meaning from the text. 3. Ask Ss to find out 4 words or phrases in the text and to work out the meanings from the text in groups. 4. Ask some Ss to present their answers to the class. 5. Ask Ss the question: How did you work out the meanings? Help Ss make a summary. 6. Ask Ss to replace the underlined parts in the short passage with the words given. 7. Encourage Ss to work out the meanings of the unknown words in Review what they have read in the last period. 1. Think about their way to deal with new words. 2. Try to feel and learn how to work out meaning from the text. 3. Find all the words listed in the text. 4. Do group-work to work out the meaning of the words. 5. Finish Exercise 4 on handout. 6. Do pair-work to practice working-outmeaning
