(B) I bought a jasmine plant for my office. When I bought it, I was told it would bloom(开花) and the sweet smell would fill my office. I had the plant for two months, and every day I looked at it, but there weren't any flowers or pleasant smell. I was not happy, so I gave the plant to my friend Linda. One day, another friend Mary called and invited me to her office. When I walked in, her jasmine flowers surprised me. I reached out to touch the flowers. Mary cut some and gave them to me. I couldn't help smelling them. Surrounded by the sweet smell of only a handful of these flowers, I suddenly understood something. Mary bought her plant the same time I did. It took a year for her jasmine to bloom. I was so impatient for mine to bloom; regretfully, I gave it away. In a way my life is like the jasmine plant. I need to be patient and let things happen. Last Sunday Linda told me that she was going abroad the next week. Before she left, she returned the plant to me. This time I am going to wait. I have learned that when we want something in our life, we have to be patient. I am slowly learning to have that patience to wait for my jasmine to bloom. 28. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people. Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing. By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money. After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing, Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918, he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published using the everyday language that people spoke, which helped make it a great success. This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q (1921), made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer. 第 4页 共 8 页

Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about China’s future. In 1926, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he calleed “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this, the government stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names. Since his death in 1936, Lu Xun’s importance and influence have grown. Today, many of his writings are included in school textbooks and his works are read by millions around the world. 31. The underlined word “This” (Paragraph 4) refers to __________ . A. the success of Diary of a Madman C. the first Chinese novel A. funny stories C. articles against the government B. the use of everyday language D. The True Story of Ah Q B. articles about himself D. stories about government officials

32. After moving to Shanghai, Lu Xun mainly wrote_________ .

33. In what order did these events take place in Lu Xun’s life? A. The government stopped him from publishing books. B. He wrote Diary of a Madman. C. His father became ill. D. He moved to Shanghai. e. His writings were put into textbooks. A. c-a-b-d-e B. c-b-d-a-e (D) Who would have thought that millions of people would buy a product having living insects? A businessman named Milton Levine did. He created the Uncle Milton Ant Farm more than half a century ago. Today, grandchildren of the first ant colony(群体) owners are watching ants working hard on the farm. Milton Levine was not trained in the study of insects, also known as entomology. But he knew a lot about ants, and he designed a charming way to share his knowledge. Mr Levine began his career as a maker of unusual toys after World War II. He got the idea for the future career from a business newsletter, which suggested that the best chances for jobs at the time were toys. He decided to make toys. He understood that American society was about to change. The large population increase known as the Baby Boom was beginning. There would be a large need for children’s toys. One day, he saw ants parading(游行) around a swimming pool. The sight made Mr Levine remember how much he had liked watching ants as a boy on his uncle’s farm. Those thoughts gave him the idea for the Uncle Milton Ant Farm. Milton Levine developed a small, green plastic container(容器). The top looked like a farm, showing a farmhouse, a barn, a bridge and a windmill(风车). Under those was a divider that divided the ants’ underground and above-ground areas. Under that was the sand where people could watch the ants digging ways. 第 5页 共 8 页 C. a-c-d-b-e D. a-d-b-c-e

The first Uncle Milton Ant Farms were an immediate success. They were sold in 1956. Two years later, two million of the educational toys had been sold. During his life, Mr Levine saw the sale of more than twenty million of his ant colonies. The Uncle Milton Ant Farm tells far more than how to care for the ants. For example, people receiving an Uncle Milton Ant Farm learn that the little insects are strong. Some can carry things fifty times heavier that they are. A writer remembers owning an Uncle Milton Ant Farm when he was about five years old and then he became very good at numbers by counting the ants. 34. which of the following words can best describe Milton Levine? A. Strong A. Roses B. Modest B. Butterflies C. Creative C. Tigers B. the Baby Boom D. a farmhouse D. Humorous D. Monkeys 35. ______ may be studied in the science of entomology. 36.
