A Mom was a teacher most of her life. When she wasn?t in the classroom, she was educating her children or grandchildren: correcting our grammar; starting us on collections of butterflies, flowers or rocks; or inspiring a discussion on her most recent “Book of the Month Club” topic. Mom made learning fun. It was sad for my three brothers and me to see her suffering in later years. At eighty-five, she suffered a stroke and she went steadily downhill after that. Two days before she died, my brothers and I met at her nursing home and took her for a short ride in a wheelchair. While we waited for the staff to lift her back into bed, Mom fell asleep. Not wanting to wake her, we moved to the far end of the room and spoke softly. After several minutes our conversation was interrupted by a sound coming from across the room. We stopped talking and looked at Mom. Her eyes were closed, but she was clearly trying to communicate with us. We went to her side. “Whirr,” she said weakly. “Where?” I asked. “Mom, is there something you want?” “Whirr,” she repeated a bit stronger. My brothers and I looked at each other and shook our heads sadly. Mom opened her eyes, sighed, and with all the energy she could master said, “Not was, say were!” It suddenly occurred to us that Mom was correcting brother Jim?s last sentence. “If it was up to me…” Jim leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Mom,” he whispered. We smiled at each other ----remarkable teacher. 56. When Mom said, “Whirr”, what did she really want to do? A. She wanted to tell her sons her will. B. She wanted to have something to eat before she died. C. She wanted to correct the mistakes Jim made while talking. D. She wanted to teach her sons more because she was dying. 57. Which of the following statements is NOT right? A. Mom was a good teacher and never wanted to stop her teaching. B. Mom was always making her teaching fun. C. Mom didn?t forget her teaching until she died. D. Mom was no longer a teacher when she was at home. 58. What does the writer think of his mother? A. He loved her but was tired of his mother?s teaching at home. B. His mother should forget her teaching and enjoyed the rest of her life. C. His mother was great because she devoted herself to teaching. D. His mother was an excellent teacher before she was retired. 59. Which of the following is the best title of this passage? A. Once a teacher, always… B. Mom?s will C. A teacher?s life D. always take the most direct route and know exactly how far to march. The new study shows that counting their steps is an important part of the scheme. Over the years, scientists have proposed several theories for how ants find their way home. One is that they do it like honeybees and remember visual clues, but experiments showed ants can travel in the dark. Another theory is that because ants run at a steady pace, they could time how long it took them to get to and from. Other studies have shown that once ants find a good source of food, they teach other ants how to find it. The ant “pedometer” technique was first proposed in 1904, but it remained untested until now. Scientists trained desert ants to walk along a straight path from their nest entrance to a feeder 30 feet away. If the nest or feeder was moved, the ants would break from their straight path after reaching the expected spot and search for their goal. Try that on stilts. They glued stilt-like extentions to the legs of some ants to lengthen stride. The researchers shortened other ants? stride length by cutting off the ants? feet and lower legs, reducing their legs to stumps. The ants on stilts took the right number of steps, but because of their increased stride length, marched past their goal. Stump-legged ants, meanwhile, fell short of the goal. After getting used to their new legs, the ants were able to adjust their pedometer. 60. What is the passage mainly about? A. Ants? marching depends on counting their steps B. Desert ants know how to look for food C. The secret for ants? marching is known to all D. Ants know how far their food is 61. Apart from counting their steps, how can ants find their way? A. That was before we entered the “permissive period in education” in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy on us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation. Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we?ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Clomps who says of her students—“so passive” —and wonders what has happened.Nothing is demanded of them, she believes.Television, says Clomps, contributes to children?s passivity.“We?re talking

If you can avoid conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Let?s see what you can do. ★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the

world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever. ★ Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn't said! Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It's essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point. ★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don't understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort. ★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it's a great way to move forward.

Topic Reason 83. _____ on handling conflicts

How to 81. ______ conflicts at work Conflicts won't 82. ______ if not dealt with ● Don't be afraid of conflicts which are usually 84. ______. ● Interrupt the "waiting game", try to admit your 85. ______ actively and solve it soon or it will get 86. ______ ● Don?t imagine people do something to make you 87. ______ on purpose. 第三节 书面表达 【参考范文】 In modern times, more and more parents devote their energy to their career due to fierce competition, thus caring less about their children. Many of them choose to reward their children with money for the progress they have made in their studies. However, I don?t think this is a practical and proper way. Firstly, if the children are always rewarded with money when they get high marks, their attention will focus on money instead of the pleasure of studying. Some of them will stop working hard as soon as they get what they want. Secondly, too much money will spoil the children, for they are too young to make good use of the money. I think a hug and a kiss will work better for children than money.
