An independent school can admit the following as students EXCEPT A. grown-ups B. only girls C. both boys and girls D. only boys C Since the early 1990s, the Internet has greatly changed the way people communicate. But some teachers think the changes are not all for the better. Eleanor Johnson, an English professor at Columbia University in New York, says, ―Ｉthink text messaging has made students believe that it is far more acceptable than it actually is to just make spelling and grammatical mistakes.‖ She says her students over the past several years have increasingly used less formal English in their writing. She says words and phrases like ―you know‖ now appearing research papers. And she now has to talk about another problem in class---incorrect word use. Professor Johnson doubts a strong connection between the rise of communication online and an increase in writing mistakes. But she admits there may not be much scientific proof, at least not ye t. David Crystal, a British language expert, says the actively changing nature of the Internet makes it difficult to stay unchanged in studying its effects. But he believes its effect on language is small. He says, ―The main effect of the Internet on language has been to increase the expressive richness of language, providing the language with a new set of communicative content that didn’t exist in the past.‖ Erin Jansen, founder of an online dictionary of Internet and text messaging terms, says his new technology has not changed existing language but has greatly added to the vocabulary.
―Basically it is a freedom of expression,‖ she says, ―If it is helping them write more or communicate more, that is great. That is what teachers and educators want---to get students communicating.‖ But Erin Jansen and David Crystal agree with Eleanor Jonson on at least one thing. Teachers need to make sure students understand the uses and rules of language. 9． According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Students’ Writing and the Internet: Good or Bad? C. Students’ Papers and the Internet: Good or Bad? D. Students’ Mistakes and the Internet: Good or Bad? D Have you ever been in a situation, where you felt uneasy because of something you think you may have forgotten to do or perhaps a feeling that you annoyed someone whom you wanted to get along with really well. If you have experienced such feelings and worse on a regular basis, then you most probably are a victim of anxiety attacks. All of us, to some extent, have experienced anxiety at different levels. There are somethings you may know about anxiety, and some things that you may not be familiar with. So in order to be prepared for your unexpected feeling of anxiety, you need to get to know what anxiety is before it escalates into a panic attack. Anxiety is simply the feeling of discomfort, uneasiness or fear of what may eventually happen resulting from an imagined, or a real threatening condition. On the extreme end panic attacks can occur due to heightened(增加) feelings of anxiety. There are two main symptoms(症状) during an anxiety / panic attack and these are physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms include difficulty in breathing, shaking, direct feeling of heat, rapid heartbeat and tiredness while emotional symptoms deal with worrying, depression, fear, and lack of focus. In spite of the negative impression we have for anxiety, it is not dangerous in any way whatever. The feeling of anxiety is not bad, in fact it’s more of a defensive feeling which protects us from possible danger by engaging a response within us in fight or fight situations. So it’s not the ―bad
guy‖, you just have to learn how to control it. Panic attacks, however, are far more dangerous and should be a concern to your health. Panic can sometimes result in blurred (模糊不清的) vision, difficulty in breathing due to a tight chest. The best way to different anxiety from any serious illness is to ask a medical expert for advice on a regular basis. 13．According to the passage, a panic attack is _______________. However, many students still don’t know how to coordinate their study, rest and physical exercise when preparing for the Exams. They usually devote too much time to their study, which results in poor health and low efficiency of learning. As the proverb goes, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. We’d better leave ourselves enough time to sleep since it enables us to learn our lessons more efficiently. What’s more, a strong and healthy body is the base for our further study and our future work and creative activities. Therefore, as we are preparing for the Exams, don’t forget that rest, exercise and study are equally important.
