A EAT YOUR VEGETABLES. Wash your hands. Always say “please” and “thank you”. We are full of advice for our children, but when it comes to money, we often have little to say. As a result, our children may grow up with clean hands and good manners, but without any idea how to manage their money. Here are some basics that will help guide them their entire lives:
Show them the future. If your 13-year-old girl were to save $1,000,invest（投资）it at 8%
and add $100 every month, by the time she is 65,she would have $980,983!
Be careful of credit. Credit cards can help you buy necessary things and build a credit history,
but they must be used responsibly, which means paying off your debt in time. Explain to your children that when you buy something using a credit card, you can easily end up paying two or three times what you would have paid if you used cash.
Teach patience. Suppose your child wants a new bicycle that costs $150. Rather than pay the
cash, give him some regular pocket money and explain that by putting aside, say, $15 each week, he will be able to buy it for himself in only ten weeks.
Provide incentive. Tell your children the importance of saving. “For every dollar he or she
agrees to save and invest rather than spend, you agree to add another dollar to the pot,” says Cathy Pareto, expert in money planning.
Explain your values. Values and money are deeply intertwined, says Eilleen Gallo, co-author
of The Financially Intelligent Parent. When your child demands that you buy something, explain why you really don’t want to buy it. “You might say, ‘I’d rather save that money for your education,” advises Gallo. Every time you spend or don’t spend money, you have a chance to share your values. 51. The writer gives some basics to help ______ in a proper way. A. children follow their parents’ instructions B. parents save their money C. parents teach their children how to deal with money D. children manage their money 52. The writer thinks that, if a child wants to buy something, his parents should_______. A. give him some regular pocket money D. encourage him to put money away for it 53. What leads the writer to write this article? A. Parents care little about their children’s management of money. B. He wants to share his good ideas about money matters. C. He thinks money management the most important for children
B. explain to him the importance of investment
C. tell him to save some money by using a credit card
D. Parents want to know how to educate their children. B Can people change their skin color without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson? Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin color. The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 percent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 percent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science. Scientists have changed the color of a dark-striped zebra-fish（斑马鱼） to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebra-fish skin color is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanin (黑色素). The number, size and darkness of melanin per pigment cell determine skin color. It appears that, like the golden zebra-fish, light-skinned Europeans also have a mutation (变异) in the gene for melanin production. This results in less pigmented skin. However, Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebra-fish genes. Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太阳光紫外线), which can cause skin cancer. But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D. So the related gene changes, according to Cheng. Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans, so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin color, said Cheng. The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin color without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson. 54. The passage mainly tells us that ________. A. people can not change their skin color without any pain B. scientists have found out that people’s skin color is determined by the gene C. pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin color as he liked D. the new discovery could lead to research into ways to change skin color safely. 55. It can be inferred from the passage that _____________. A. nowadays people who want to change their skin color have to suffer a lot from the damage caused by the chemical treatment B. Europeans and Africans have the same gene C. the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancer D. there are two kinds of genes 56. Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra-fish in order to _____________. A. find the different genes of humans’ B.find out the ways of changing people’s skin color C. find out the reason why the Africans’ skin color is dark D. prove the humans’ skin color is d etermined by the pigment gene
57. The reason why Europeans are light-skinned is probably that _____________. A. they are born light-skinned people B. they pay much attention to protecting their skin C. they have fewer activities outside D. light-skinned Europeans have mutation i n the gene for melanin production C Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing. By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic（逻辑）behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.” Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain from now. Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success. Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there. Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try. 58. What’s the main purpose of the writer writing the text? A. To advise readers to start their writing. B. To explain the importance of writing. C. To persuade readers to become writers. that . B. you still need to work hard D. writing is important to solve problems D. To increase readers’ brain power. 59. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fifth paragraph implies A. you are already successful C. writing can help you walk half way A. A Way on How to Write. B. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing. C. Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing. D. How to Start Your Writing. 6 0. What would be the best title for the text?
D “It is a dreadful thing to be poor a fortnight before Christmas,” said Clorinda, with the mournful sigh of seventeen years. Aunt Emmy smiled. Aunt Emmy was sixty, and spent the hours she didn't spend in a bed, on a sofa or in a wheel chair; but Aunt Emmy was never heard to sigh. “The gifts which money can purchase are not the only ones we can give,” said Aunt Emmy gently, “nor the best, either.” “Oh, I know it's nicer to give something of your own work,” agreed Clorinda, “but materials for fancy work cost too. That kind of gift is just as much out of the question for me as any other.” “That was not what I meant,” said Aunt Emmy. “What did you mean, then?” asked Clorinda, looking puzzled. Aunt Emmy smiled. “Suppose you think out my meaning for yourself,” she said. “That would be bett er than if I explained it. Besides, I don't think I could explain it. Take the beautiful line of a beautiful poem to help you in your thinking out: 'The gift without the giver is bare.” “I'd put it the other way and say, “The giver without the gift is bare,” said Clorinda. “That is my predicament(窘境)exactly. Well, I hope by next Christmas I'll not be quite bankrupt. I'm going into Mr. Callender's store down at Murraybridge in February. He has offered me the place, you know.” “Won't your aunt miss you terribly?” said Aunt Emmy gravely. “I think she would rather have your companionship than a part of your salary, Clorinda,” said Aunt Emmy. “But of course you must decide for yourself, dear.” “Well, I must say bye-bye and run home.” Clorinda lived just across the road from Aunt Emmy in a tiny white house behind some huge willows. But Aunt Mary lived there too--the only relative Clorinda had, for Aunt Emmy wasn't really her aunt at all. Clorinda had always lived with Aunt Mary ever since she could remember. Clorinda puzzled over Aunt Emmy's meaning for days. Then all at once it came to her. On Christmas Day, Clorinda went over to Aunt Emmy's. Aunt Emmy was lying on the sofa before “I've come to tell you all about it,” she said. “Aunt Emmy, I thought for days over your meaning ... And then one evening it just came to me. At first I didn't think I could give some of them, and then I thought how selfish I was. I would have been willing to pay any amount of money for gifts if I had had it, but I wasn't willing to pay what I had. I got over that, though, Aunt Emmy. Now I'm going to tell you what I did give.” “First, there was old Aunt Kitty. You know she was my nurse when I was a baby. She is always glad when I go to see her, but I've never gone except when I couldn't help it. She is very deaf, and rather dull and stupid, you know. Well, I gave her a whole day. I took my knitting yesterday, and sat with her the whole time and just talked and talked. She was so pleased and proud; she told me when I came away that she hadn't had such a nice time for years.”
the fire, and Clorinda sat down beside her.
“Then there was ... Florence. You know, Aunt Emmy, we were always close friends until last year. Then Florence once told Rose Watson something I had told her in confidence. I found it out and I was so hurt. I couldn't forgive Florence, and I told her plainly I could never be a real friend to her again. Florence felt badly, because she really did love me, and she asked me to forgive her, but it seemed as if I couldn't. Well, Aunt Emmy, that was my Christmas gift to her ... my forgiveness.” “I gave Aunt Mary her gift this morning. I told her I wasn't going to Murraybridge, that I just meant to stay home with her. She was so glad--and I'm glad, too, now that I've decided so.” “Your gifts have been real gifts, Clorinda,” said Aunt Emmy. “Something of you--the best of you--went into each of them.” “I didn't forget you, Aunt Emmy,” she said, as she unpinned the paper. There was a rosebush. Aunt Emmy loved flowers. She put her finger under one of the roses and kissed it. “It's as sweet as yourself, dear child,” haven't you, dear?” “Yes, thanks to you, Aunt Emmy,” said Clorinda softly. 61. Clorinda felt anxious before Christmas because___________. A. She had to leave Aunt Mary B. She didn’t know what kind of Christmas gifts she should buy C. She had not enough money to buy Christmas gifts D. She had no time to make a proper decision 62. Which of the following sentences can best explain the line “The gift without the giver is bare.”? A. A gift which isn’t valued by the giver means little. B. Forgiveness is a gift for the giver and the receiver. C. You cannot buy love or respect with expensive gifts. D. Think twice before you give gifts to somebody 63. What is the gift that Clorinda gave to old Aunt Kitty? A. Passion A. respectfully A. cute and joyful C. optimistic and wise B. Sympathy B. confidently C. Kindness C. secretly D. Company D. willingly 64. What does the underlined phrase “in confidence” mean? 65. Which two words can best describe Aunt Emmy? As Norman Vincent Peale puts, “Attitude is everything.” we will achieve our goals in the end.
It means our attitude will decide
whether we will succeed or not in the future. If we take a positive attitude and keep on trying , I can’t agree more with this view. At one time I was not good at E nglish, which made me very depressed. Then I realized that I had to do well in English to go to my favorite university. I talked with my teacher about my problem, who offered some valuable advice to me. With my teacher’s help, I improved my English gradually. My story shows that if we have a good attitude and keep on trying, we will be able to overcome difficulty and move on. It is our attitude that plays a major role in our life.
