I took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent. One of the passengers was a small grey man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him. One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly. The rest of us were silent. The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice, ―A very good morning to you all!‖ Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured ―good morning‖ in reply. The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. The thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other. One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smilingly and asked, ―Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?‖ We never got to know if his name really was ―Charlie‖, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat. Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place.

Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or hopefully---on holiday somewhere. When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers even asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door. The old gentleman was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work. The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. 1. The story is mainly developed by ______. A. time B. logic C. comparison D. cause and result 2. If you are the sort of person who spends a long time looking for your mobile phone, Google may have the answer. And the solution will be right in front of your eyes. The technology giant is close to launching(投放市场) a pair of glasses that would deliver all the services of a smartphone straight to the wearer’s eye. Featuring a mini display on one lens, the hi-tech glasses allow users to surf the Internet or deal with text messages and emails without lifting a finger. The screen is controlled with a ―mouse‖ which is moved simply by moving your head. Users would also be able to see through the lenses as normal and go about their daily business then, with a move of the head, to make the display start working. The glasses would use the same Google operating system that powers Android smartphones

and would connect to the Internet through 3G or next-generation 4G mobile networks. It is believed the glasses will let you make calls using an in-built microphone. They would also be equipped with GPS mapping technology and sensors(感应器), as well as a camera. It brings the possibility that wearers could be given information immediately on the buildings they are looking at, on nearby landmarks(标志性建筑) or friends who are in the area. But the devices will also bring new potential for advertisers to reach users in ever more personal situations, such as in a lift, a restaurant or relaxing on their sofa. The people familiar with the Google glasses revealed clues about how the glasses would work. ―These glasses, we heard, have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality applications. The heads-up display is only for one eye and on the side.‖ The glasses are apparently being developed in Google’s top-secret research laboratory in Mountain View, California. Reports suggest the device, which would revolutionize the smartphone market, could be available by the end of this year costing less than ￡380 --- making it cheaper than Apple’s iPhone. 6. The passage is mainly about ______. A. the hi-tech glasses being developed by Google will be on the market soon B. the hi-tech glasses have varieties of functions besides daily usage C. the hi-tech glasses are controlled by moving the head D. the hi-tech glasses will be cheaper than Apple’s iPhone 7. The underlined words ― the technology giant‖ in Paragraph 2 probably refers to ______. A. the hi-tech glasses B. the smartphone C. Google D. Apple 8. The glasses will help users a lot except ______. A. surfing the Internet B. doing daily business C. making calls D. improving near-sightedness 9. According to the passage, we know that ______. A. the glasses have been being developed in secret by Google B. the glasses would only work as an ordinary camera C. the glasses could help wearers go through any buildings D. the glasses would take the place of Apple’s iPhone 10. If you had the glasses, you would not need the following except a ______. A. camera B. phone C. map D. car
When I decided to write the story of my early years growing up in poverty, many of my friends and family members were shocked. They were more interested in my story of success, such as how was I able to create the nation’s largest law firm and sell it to a bank? ―How does one sell a law firm for millions of dollars?‖ That’s the story everyone wanted me to write, but it’s not the story that I wanted to tell. Looking back, I see so clearly how often, throughout my boyhood, I was touched by random acts of kindness that helped shape me into the man I am today. And random acts of violence and ignorance played just a powerful role in making me who I am. Becoming a successful lawyer

involves hard work, but escaping generational poverty is the hardest thing I have ever done. I chose to write the story of my childhood years in poverty, with the hope that a child somewhere in the world will read my story and be inspired to break the cycle of poverty. My publisher was quick to point out that the market would be small for a memoir(回忆录) written by a relatively unknown author. To everyone’s surprise, the book received over 1000 pre-publication orders one month before the scheduled launch date. The book launch scheduled for October 1, 2009, was moved up to September 14, 2009. Less than four months later, the first print run of 5,000 hardback copies was sold out. Today, the memoir is being used by universities, high schools and middle school as a case of poverty as well as valuable lessons on how to succeed in life. Here is a quote for students of the 5th through 8th grades: ―WE are halfway through your story. It is changing the lives of our students and the perspectives of our teachers.‖ 11. in this digital lock, the light turns green and you are ready to roll. Annual members get a plastic key, which goes into this electronic lock. Returning the bicycle is also easy. You can go to any Bikeshare location and push the bike back into the rack(架子). Washington’s local government started this program in September 2010. Today there are 134 stations with 1,100 bicycles in the nation’s capital and the neighboring city of Arlington, Virginia. Chris Hollben is the project director of Washington’s Capital Bikeshare program. It offers a wide variety of membership options(选择) --- for a single day, three days, one month, or a full year. Holben says the number of annual memberships is increasing. ―We have about 20,000 annual members who can walk up and take a bike out,‖ said Holben. ―We also had about 90,000 visitors and many people here use our bikes.‖ During the last year these bicycles have been used for one million rides. A membership survey shows that five percent of those who use Bikeshare would have used cars if bikes were not available. Holben says this works out to 50,000 fewer automobile trips. In the developing world, many people regard bicycles as the ride of the poor and a car as a symbol of status. Holben said what he called ―national heroes‖ could help counter that image. ―I think one of the main things is that you need some champions at either a high political level or a higher social level, who can promote cycling whether for health reasons or get people out of the car,‖ added Holben. Two other Washington suburbs, Momgomery County, Maryland, and the city of Alexandria, Virginia, have now approved plans to join the network, which will grow to 288 stations and 2,800 bikes by the end of 2012. 16. What should you do first if you want to use the bike of the Bikeshare locations? A. Push the bike back into the rack. B. Use a credit card to unlock the bike. C. Ask the Bikeshare workers to unlock it. D. Use a plastic key to get the code of the lock. 17. If you are a member of the Bikeshare program, you can rent a bike for at most ______. A. a full year B. three days C. one month D. a single day 18. We can learn from the passage that the Bikeshare program ______. A. was started by Washington’s local government B. mainly aims to make the travel of foreigners easier C. will have twice the present number of bikes in 2012 D. aims to solve the problem of the lack of enough cars 19. The underlined word ―champions‖ in Paragraph 5 probably refers to people who ______. A. belong to a team B. have won first prize C. support a cause D. are experts in a field 20. What would be the best title for this passage? A. Cycling has replaced driving in America. B. Bikeshare locations are found everywhere in America. C. Bikeshare locations are a new service industry. D. Bikeshare program makes cycling lifestyle easy.

The date of birth may affect one's chance to climb up to the topmost corporate position in future career, a Canadian study shows. The study, carried out by researchers from Sauder School of Business at University of British Columbia, is based on a sample of 375 CEOs from S&P 500, between 1992 and 2009. Set to appear in the December issue of the journal Economics Letters, the study found that only 6.13 percent and 5.87 percent of the CEOs were born in June and July, respectively. By comparison, people born in March and April represented 12.53 percent and 10.67 percent of the sample, it said. Professor Maurice Levi, a co-author of the study, said their findings indicate that summer babies are less likely to be CEOs due to a "birth-date effect". In the United States, cut-off dates for school admission fall between September and January. Students born between June and July are the youngest in their class, while those born in March and April are the oldest, taking into account that children with birthdays too close to the cut-offs often start their school behind or ahead of schedule. "With advantages on intellectual development(智力发展), older children in the same grade tend to perform better than the youngers," explained Levi. "Early success is often rewarded with leadership and learning opportunities, leading to more future advantages throughout life." 21. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A. The study was carried out in Canada. B. The study was based on a sample of 500 CEOs. C. The study will be published in the journal Economic Letters in December. D. Professor Maurice Levi was one of the authors of the study. 22. According to the study, people born in______ make up the largest number of CEOs. A. April B. June C. March D. July 23. The underlined word ―cut-off‖ in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to _______. A. remove B. reduce C. stop the supply D. deadline 24. According to the passage, if a kid was born is July, he is likely to ______. A. be less smarter than those who were born in March and April B. be the oldest in his class C. perform better than the children born in April D. have less chance to be a CEO than those who were born in March 25. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The date of birth determines the chance to be CEOs. B. Summer babies less likely to be CEOs. C. How ―birth-date effect‖ works. D. Don’t give birth in summer.

Its Chinese-language teacher, Marta Nori, says just 13 students took the course at first, but there are now nearly 200 students learning Chinese and the number may jump to 250 in 2013. "The Confucius Institutes play an important role," Hu says. Nori teaches Chinese language, history, literature and philosophy at the school, together with a Chinese teacher, and a new instructor sent by the Confucius Institute. "The institute supports us greatly in language and culture teaching, offering us books and opportunities to go to China via Hanban's programs," she says. Hu Chunshuang, the other Chinese teacher from the school, says: "Some Italians think they may have more job opportunities after learning Chinese, because there is a lot of trading between the two countries." However, Nori says there are many difficulties, such as few opportunities to speak the language and the relative inexperience of the teachers. 26. 阅读下面的短文，然后按照要求写一篇 150 词左右的英语短文。 Here you are to experience your first year in high school! Are you worried about it or just feeling confident about your future? Anyway you must be expecting to do well in the first year and just try really hard to start earning A’s even if you’ve never been on the honor roll before. And here’s how: The first, and the most important, you need to set up your goal. What is it that you are trying to achieve through studying? What is motivating(激发…积极性) you? After these questions are answered, you can better arrange your priorities(优先考虑的事) in order to be successful in reaching your goal. Remember, your goal and priorities should be decided by you, not by the people who surround you. Having a clear sense of who you are, including your beliefs and values, instead of letting others tell you what to say, what to do, and what to believe, will also help you to be more successful on the path you choose.
