The upholstery cover materials shall fulfill the legal requirements for combustibility according to Technical Supply Specification TL 1010. Approval of first supplies and changes according to VW 01155. Avoidance of hazardous substances according to VW 91101. At least 2 m2 of roll stock or pieces with a total equivalent surface area are required for a complete laboratory evaluation and shall be supplied upon request. Requirements for the individual material grades are specified in special Technical Supply Specifications (TL), drawings or releases. These may contain type-specific deviations from material characteristics, which are always valid for standard production supply. 2 Specifications in technical documentation

Description example for upholstery cover material made of woven fabric: VW 50105 - Woven Fabric 3 Scope and aim

This standard contains basic requirements for material grades and part grades of upholstery cover materials. The standard shall apply to woven, knitted and split-knitted materials for seat coverings and backrest covers, other coverings and laminations. The required numerical values apply to each individual measurement. All tests shall be performed on materials in the laminated condition. 4 Appearance

The upholstery cover material shall comply with the requirements according to Volkswagen standard VW 91101 with regard to the content of fiber components as well as additives, e.g. coloring agents.

It shall be clean, free of mineral oil, free of misweaves and knit flaws, and distortion-free when laid out. The fabric must not be streaky. Skewed weft and bowed weft over the entire fabric width shall not exceed 1,5% for woven fabrics and 2% for circular-knitted fabrics. Skewed weft shall be measured over the entire fabric width of the roll stock whereas bowed weft shall be measured at the highest point of the bow (at right angles to the traveling direction, see Figure 1). Figure 1: Bowed weft In the edge areas of the material, the skewed weft and bowed weft shall not exceed 2% for woven fabrics and 2,5% for circular-knitted fabrics. At least 250 mm of the entire width shall be measured. Deviations and further specifications may be agreed upon in consultation with the engineering departments and shall be documented in the drawing. Solid fabrics are excepted from testing. If required, the upholstery cover material shall be high-frequency weldable (HF-weldable) in conjunction with a suitable padding insert. Changes are possible by written agreement. Substances or foreign matter that have an adverse effect on the HF-weldability and bond stability are not permissible. For cut pile, the fibrous web shall be of uniform density. For flock fabric, formation of shiny areas is not permissible. In rayon fiber, only moisture resistant-grade or highly moisture resistant-grade material shall be used. In wool, only pure wool (not reclaimed wool) is permitted to be used. The backing fabric shall be laminated in a stress-relieved manner. 5 Chemical treatment

Finishes, impregnations and fillers are not permissible. Deviations are permissible in individual cases, e.g. a silicic acid-based finish to improve resistance to shifting or the use of potentially required chemical softening agents; however, these additives shall not produce a stiff feeling on the upholstery cover material surface. Organic or inorganic substances that can adversely affect lightfastness, durability or emission behavior must not be added to the face fabric. This includes e.g. phosphoric acid derivatives serving as flame retardants. 6 Marking

The back of the roll stock must be visibly marked in compliance with the specification (manufacturer, batch number, etc.). The marking must not have an adverse effect on the face fabric. The batch marking shall be agreed upon accordingly (maximum distance between marking imprints 350 mm).

The type and color of the foam to be used shall be agreed upon with the respective test laboratory or engineering departments. Supplier, type and overall weight of the foam shall be indicated at the time of sampling. Backing material according to TL 487 or according to specification. 7.2 Weight per unit area

The upholstery cover material shall be cleanable with an aqueous wetting agent solution and with conventional organic solvents, e.g. petroleum ether, without forming a ring. After special boiling point spirit Type 2 according to DIN 51631 has been allowed to evaporate from the wetted, approximately 50 cm surface, no rings are permitted to form on the face fabric. During cleaning tests with a white ether-soaked cloth, unused fabric must not change color and bleeding into the cloth must not occur.

Cut piles are excepted from this test. Friction medium I (viscose/linen) only. For foam laminations with a thickness of ≥ 4,5 mm, the foam shall be removed up to a residual foam thickness of (2 + 0,5) mm with a suitable cutting tool (e.g. universal fast splitting machine UAF 470, by Fortuna Werke Stuttgart, Germany). For natural fiber-blend fabrics, a contact force of 10 N and a weight loss of ≤ 0,30 g can be agreed upon. Notes on testing Specimen preparation

Prior to testing, the specimens shall be conditioned for a minimum of 24 h in the DIN EN ISO 139 standard climate. 10.2 Maximum tensile strength

Test values for each 5 cm of specimen width. Determination of tear strength in the strip tensile test according to DIN EN ISO 13934-1 at a traverse speed of 100 mm/min and a free clamping length (gage length) of 100 mm. 10.3 Resistance to delamination

Test values for each 5 cm of specimen width. The separating force is determined by testing according to DIN 53357. When evaluating, not only the peak values but also the entire separating force scatter range is recorded. 10.4 Weight per unit area

The tests are carried out according to DIN EN 29073-1 and DIN EN 12127. The weight per unit area is measured on at least five round specimens of 100 cm2 each, which are taken from the total width of the roll.

A specimen of approximately 25 cm2 is wetted with 2 cm3 of deionized water, placed between filter papers (Schleicher & Schüll, "Blauband 5893") and 2 glass plates, and loaded with a weight of 5 kg for 1 h. The filter paper is evaluated for bleeding based on the gray-scale level according to DIN EN 20105-A03. Color fastness against abrasion (crockmeter test) is determined using ECE cotton fabric according to DIN EN ISO 105-X12. The woven fabric is evaluated for bleeding based on the gray-scale level according to DIN EN 20105-A03. 10.6 Moisture absorption

A 100 cm2 round specimen of filter paper (Schleicher & Schüll 601) is immersed in water and then blotted between 2 additional sheets of filter paper until only approximately 7 g of moisture remains in the round specimen. This filter paper is then placed on an identically sized round specimen of the fabric to be tested. Both are placed between two glass plates and loaded with approximately 20 N for 3 h at room temperature. 10.7 Permanent set

Only for upholstery cover materials with foam lamination, thickness of foam ≥ 8 mm: Loading with approximately 100 N/100 cm2 specimen size for 5 h, then completely unloaded for 2 h. All measurements are performed with a preload of 3,5 N/100 cm2. 10.8 Environmental aging

At least one specimen of (500 x 500) mm shall be taken from the fabric under test. In the case of multicolor fabrics, sufficient specimens shall be taken so that each color can be tested. 10.9.3 Test procedure The specimen is placed on a waterproof backing. 10 ml of deionized water is applied onto the center of the specimen from as low as possible; adapt the speed of application so that the water cannot flow off the upper side of the specimen but is absorbed. The specimens wetted in this way are spread out to dry at room temperature (18 to 25) °C. After the specimens are completely dry – this condition can be checked by weighing them before and after the treatment – changes in color or color appearance as compared to the unwetted area are evaluated using a gray-scale level. For light-colored fabrics, the gray-scale level according to DIN EN 20105-A03 shall be used; for darker colors, the gray-scale according to DIN EN 20105-A02 shall be used.
