(B) Ecotourism:A Different Way to Travel Are you attracted to obscure(不著名的) places?Do you prefer to vacation away from other tourists? Are you careful to take only memories and to leave only footprints(脚印、足迹)?If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you just might be an ecotourist(生态旅行者). Ecotourists are people who want to experience the unspoiled natural world—and leave it that way when they return home. This trend started in the 1990s,and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Kapawi Ecolodge in Ecuador’s remote Amazon Basin(亚马逊河流域) is contributing to that expansion, and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like. At the Ecolodge, a small group of cabins (小房子) sits in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve and is only accessible(易接近的)by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest (亚马 逊热带雨林)seen by few outsiders. As they do,local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to appreciate(领 会、重视) the local culture as well as the natural environment. The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community (社区 或团体)to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011.The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower (授权或允许) the local people. You probably won’t start your own ecolodge(生态旅游社),but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions. The world is full of fascinating places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well. 5.According to the text, the ecotourists should be________. A.those who like to experience the easilyremembered natural environment B.those who like to go to their travelling places by hiking C.those who prefer an undamaged natural world and remain what it used to be D.those who prefer unique natural environment of cultural relics(文化遗产/ 文物) 6.At the Kapawi ecolodge, visitors can’t________. A.explore the Amazon rainforest B.reach there by air C.live in the Achuar reserve D.see many travelers from outside 7.Which of the words is closest in meaning to the word “snapshot” in the second paragraph? (C) Are you the type of person who always says “yes”?I’ve come to learn that it is very important to learn to say “no”.It’s okay.People are still going to like you. They may even respect (敬重)you more because they know you are honest. I’m not saying to say “no” to someone who really needs your help.I’m talking about turning down that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at. Think for a moment how you feel when you say “yes” to something that you really don’t want to do.If you’re like I once was, you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much.It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out.Whatever you’re saying to yourself, if you really wanted to go, you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts. So,why not just say “no” from the beginning?Maybe you feel like if you don’t show up(出席)at the meeting (by the way, it is not one you must attend), your boss isn’t going to like you or your co?workers won’t respect you.Maybe you feel as if your mom,dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do everything for them what they ask every occasion. If these people are your true friends, family members, or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what.People treat you the way you teach them to,and if you’re someone who always says “yes”, then that’s what they’re expecting. You need to do what is right for you.Of course we do have real obligations(义务或职责)in life to fulfill (满足或履行),but we do not have to do everything others want us to do. 9.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with? A.We should try to do what our friends ask us to do. B.We should help others in need. C.Always saying “yes” means you are dishonest. D.Always saying “no” means you are brave. 10.Generally speaking,we agree to do what we hate to do because we________. A.have a bad habit C.have much concern B.have a kind heart D.have obligations

11.The writer believes that if you say “no” to your family members,you’ll________. A.have the same relationship with them as before B.have a loose relationship with them

C.disappoint them D.upset them 12.What would be the best title for the text? A.Learn to Make a Right Choice B.To Be Yourself C.Do What You Want to Do D.Learn to Say “No” (D) For many people, volunteering is a way of life.Holidays are the time of the year that more people are in a giving mood.Homeless shelters(避难所),children’s hospitals, and nursing homes(敬老院) are excellent places to give of(付出或献出)one’s time. Volunteering in Homeless Shelters There is a homeless directory(目录)online that anyone can easily access(接近)to find the closest homeless shelter to their home.According to the homeless shelter directory, currently there are 3,233 shelters in the US,so it is not difficult to find a shelter.Helping to serve food, picking up donations of food, preparing meals, and cleaning up are things that one can do to help at a homeless shelter. Volunteering in Children’s Hospitals Every child needs comfort (安慰)and joy, especially during the holiday seasons.By visiting sick children in hospitals,an individual provides helping hands by supplementing(补充)the services usually done by the hospital staff(职员).Personalizing(使私人化)the hospital experience adds to the comfort and happiness of the children and their families.Volunteers provide help, and positive interactions (相互交流) which enhance (提高) the patient’s quality of care.Help is needed almost everywhere in a hospital; from the lobby (休息室) , parking lot(停车场),cafeteria(自助餐厅),to admitting, helping with the gift cart, and even reading to children in the waiting rooms or their hospital rooms. Volunteering in Nursing Homes According to the National Center for Health Statistics (统计数值) , “Over 50% of those living in nursing homes do not have close relatives (亲戚) and 46% have no living children.” Life in a nursing home is lonely, confusing(困窘的),and frightening for many residents(居民).Volunteering at a nursing home is a great opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life.Playing cards, sitting with and talking to a resident, taking a walk,or sharing a meal makes a huge difference, especially when they have no other sole on earth to visit them. The three examples above are only a small fraction (部分) of institutions (公共机构) in which volunteers are needed.Giving of oneself, especially during the holidays blesses(祝福或保佑)and cheers others. 13.According to the passage, what can a volunteer do in nursing homes?
