A I remember the day Dad first dragged the heavy accordion (手风琴) in and announced I would start lessons the following week. Spending $ 300 for an accordion and $ 5 per lesson was out of character for my father. He was always thrifty-something he learned growing up on a Pennsylvania farm. Clothes, heat and sometimes even food were lacking. Still, I wasn’t prepared until I found a case containing a beautiful violin. “It’s your father’s,” Mom said. “I guess he got too busy to ever learn to play it.” Then my lessons began. I was ordered to practice every day. Gradually, I was able to play simple songs. Later, I was asked to play at a concert, but I didn’t want to. My father explained, “You must go because you can touch people’s hearts. That’s a gift I won’t let you throw away. Someday you’ll have the chance I never had: play beautiful music for your family.” I was speechless. From then on, I practiced without my parents’ making me. At the concert I performed perfectly. As the years went by, the accordion remained a dusty memory until one afternoon when my two children discovered it by accident. They begged me to play it, so I played some simple songs, surprised that my skills hadn’t disappeared. Soon the kids were dancing in circles. Even my wife was laughing and clapping to the beat. I was amazed at their happiness. I finally knew what Dad’s words meant. He never learned to play his violin. Yet he was wrong to think he would never play for his family. In fact, on that wonderful afternoon, as my wife and children heard my accordion, it was my father’s music. 21. The underlined word “thrifty” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ A. wasteful of money C. short of money B. careful with money D. generous with money . .”

22. The author ’s father asked him to learn to play the accordion because A. he wished his son to bring joy to the family B. he wanted his son to become a musician C. the author hated to learn to play the violin D. the author was fond of listening to music 23. How did the writer feel towards his father when he played for his family? A. Disappointed. B. Proud. C. Worried. 24. Which one could be the best title of the passage? A. My Father’s Music C. An Unforgettable Memory D. Grateful.

B. My Favorite Accordion D. Practice Makes Perfect

高三英语 A 卷 第 4 页(共 12 页)

B Now a group of scientists, including ones from CalTech, MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration finally found the gravitational waves (引力波). They announced they were able to see ripples (波纹) in the structure of spacetime. What are these gravitational waves? Well, imagine throwing a rock into a pond. When the rock hits the flat surface of the water, it creates ripples. Spacetime is like the surface of the water. So gravitational waves are like the ripples moving out from where the rock hits the water. It was Einstein who said these gravitational waves should be observable. But these are not huge waves. They are smaller than the size of an atom, which is why it took so long to find them. Since 2002, scientists have been watching for these gravitational waves, using a giant scientific tool called LIGO. They have been watching two black holes in another galaxy (星系) faraway. The two were spinning around each other, moving closer and closer together. When they finally crashed into each other, gravitational waves were caused. With great power and force, they rang throughout the universe, like a giant bell. Those waves, traveling at the speed of light, finally reached the Earth, some 1.3 billion years later. The National Science Foundation said that each of the black holes was 29 to 36 times the mass of our sun. This discovery means our understanding of the heavens has changed greatly. 25. The author explains the gravitational waves by_______. A. presenting recent research findings C. comparing them to something familiar B. drawing a vivid picture D. using proper examples

26. According to the author, finding the gravitational waves means _______. A. there is a better way to deal with physics problems B. we have a better understanding of the universe C. we have reached a new level in earth studies D. there exists another galaxy in the universe 27. What does the word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The black holes. C. The scientific tools. 28. This passage mainly talks about _______. A. a new theory of gravitational waves opposite to Einstein’s B. a description of the scientific research on black holes C. the relationship between black holes and gravitational waves D. the discovery of gravitational waves Einstein believed observable 高三英语 A 卷 第 5 页(共 12 页) B. The gravitational waves. D. The galaxies.

31. Where does this passage probably come from?

D We’ve heard many stories of individuals who’ve adopted a zero-waste lifestyle, but it’s not often that an entire community is trying to become waste-free. The citizens of Kamikatsu, Japan, hope to become the nation’s first zero-waste community by 2020. Kamikatsu has no garbage trucks – so locals need to compost (制成堆肥) their kitchen waste at home. They also have to wash and sort the rest of their waste into 34 different categories, and bring it to the recycling center themselves where workers make sure that the waste goes into the correct bins. The town has turned recycling into a scientific process – there are separate bins for different types of paper products. Even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. The labels on each bin show the recycling process for that specific item, so the residents know exactly what happens to their waste. Reuse is highly encouraged in Kamikatsu – they have a local kuru-kuru shop where residents can exchange used items with new things at no extra cost. And the kuru-kuru factory employs women to make bags, clothes, and dolls out of abandoned items. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in waste management – the town has a zero-waste brewery, housed in a building constructed of reused materials. Now Kamikatsu recycles about 80% of its waste and only 20% goes to landfills (废物埋 填场), so it is very close to achieving its goal. They’ve been practicing the waste management for the past 13 years. It’s become natural to separate the waste correctly. All the recycling facilities (设施) in Kamikatsu are managed by a Zero Waste Academy, which also regularly hosts groups of foreign visitors, educating a zero-waste lifestyle. 32. According to Paragraph 2, we can learn _______. A. there are full-time workers to sort out the waste B. the Japanese town has made recycling a routine C. the kitchen waste must be sorted into different kinds D. the labels show the citizens how to sort out their waste 33. Citizens can exchange second-hand items with new things without paying extra at ______. A. a local kuru-kuru shop B. the recycling centre C. the Zero Waste Academy D. a zero-waste brewery 34. The duties of the Zero Waste Academy include ______. A. explaining to the locals what waste should go to landfills B. promoting basic recycling facilities to the foreign visitors C. introducing to visitors the benefits of a zero-waste lifestyle D. encouraging businessmen to take part in waste management 35. What can we learn from the passage? A. The citizens of Kamikatsu are unwilling to separate their waste. B. Landfills are no longer functioning in the town of Kamikatsu. C. Kamikatsu has become the nation’s first zero-waste community. D. Kamikatsu started their zero-waste project over 10 years ago. 高三英语 A 卷 第 7 页(共 12 页)
