When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be very difficult to let your anger go off. But forgiveness(原谅)is possible – and it can be surprisingly helpful to your ph

ysical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive can have more energy, better appetite and better sleep. ―People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness,‖ says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. ―So it can help save on the damage to our system and allow people to feel more energetic.‖ So when someone has hurt you, cool down first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don‘t wait for an apology. ―Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing,‖ says Dr. Luskin. ―They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don‘t see things the same way. So if you wait for people to say sorry, you could be waiting a very long time.‖ Next keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who worries you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person‘s perspective(看法). You may realize that he or she was acting out of knowledge, fear – even love. To get perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person‘s point of view. 64. One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a good friend. But how can you be a good friend at school? Listen—listen when they are talking. Don‘t say anything unless(除非) they ask you a question. Sometimes it‘s not necessary for you to have anything to say;they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them—If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don‘t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to class in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them—Be there for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous US actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you can‘t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve(应受,该得) to be with me at my best.”Always remember this! If you don‘t want to stay with your friends when they‘re in hard times, then you don‘t deserve to be with them when they‘re having a good time! Make plans—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you‘ll remember these things when you‘re all old. 64. Perhaps you are familiar with some of his books, as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. At the age of 12, his father died, and he began to work, first as a printer, then a pilot on a river boat. Those years on the boat went into his book Life on the Mississippi. Without the creativity of one man, there would be no ―happiest place on earth‖, also known as Disneyland. Walt Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even sold his pictures to neighbors. When he was sixteen, he joined the Red Cross and drove an ambulance in France during World War I. After the war ended, Disney started making short cartoons in Kansas City, but soon ran out of money. He decided to try his luck in Hollywood. He came to California with a suitcase and $20 in his pocket. It took a while, but Disney began to enjoy success with his cartoons. He created Mickey Mouse, the most famous cartoon character ever. Then in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first screened. It was the first full-length cartoons, and it turned out to be a huge success. Disney made many more movies that we still watch today, including Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi. It was in the 1940s that Walt Disney first had his brainstorm about a fun park for families. His idea grew bigger and bigger, and he realized he needed a lot of space for his park. He wanted it to have everything—a mountain, rockets, spinning teacups, and a fairy castle! Years after Walt Disney first had the idea, Disneyland opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California. Admission (门票) cost a dollar. In the next ten years, 50,000,000 visitors came to the Magic Kingdom. 64. 房山 The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? Music is playing in the background. It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed(设计) to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway. Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses(暂停) in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. The music gives them extra energy. If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably know the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used. Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proved that Muzak does what it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. Factory workers produce 13 percent more. Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries. Some people don't like Muzak. They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects(影响) everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak! 64. 门头沟 Qi Haoran, a Junior One student at Yuying High School, was quite busy over the past winter vacation ─ not just busy with his homework. Qi, together with 10 other classmates made a volunteer group to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign. The eleven students went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. ―Excuse me, do you know that 950 million people around the world still haven‘t got enough to eat? Please don‘t waste food.‖ ―Nearly 100 million people only earn about 865 yuan a year in China. They even cannot afford a cup of tea.‖ They would say this kind of thing hundreds of times every day. The Clean Your Plate Campaign began on the Internet in January, 2013. It calls on people to reduce food waste. China has experienced serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten up all the food. Luckily, the campaign has got the support of many people. In a restaurant in Xinjiang, the owner will give the guests who have eaten all that they ordered a sticker. People can enjoy a free meal when they have 10 stickers. More than 750 restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers (剩饭剩菜) home. Chen Guangbiao, a very famous person not only wanted to rename himself Chen Guangpan, which means ―Clean Your Plate‖, but also took his staff to some restaurants to eat leftovers. More and more customers are willing to wrap up their leftovers to take home. To reduce food waste is a big task and it needs time. It‘s important for everyone to do their bit, just like Qi. 延庆 “I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning to surf the Internet.” “I check my e-mail almost forty times a day.” “I seldom spend less than three hours each time on the net.” “Spend more time in chat rooms than with my real-life friends.” Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction(瘾) called Internet addiction. According to experts, Internet addicts(迷)spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. They lose control of the time they spend on the Internet. For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried and 1ooked for him everywhere but couldn‘t find him. They called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the Internet — for seven days straight. A study shows that about six to ten percent of Internet users become addicted. The teenagers spend more time on the Internet than with families. That‘s why some experts worry most about young people. Is ―surfing the Internet‖ a hobby or all addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have one of the following symptoms(症状): ★You can‘t wait to get online again. ★You go out with your friends less and less. ★You‘ve decided to spend a short time online, but then you spend several hours. ★You do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because you like to spend hours on the Internet. What is the solution(解决办法)? Some experts suggest that people set strict limits(限制) on their time for Internet use. You have to learn to control it, or the Internet would control you. 64. 燕山 Lights, cameras, action! It‘s movie night with your friends. And you‘re looking for something to snack on during the movie. What better snack to choose than popcorn? In American culture, popcorn and movies are closely tied together. It is one of the most popular snacks offered at a movie theater. Popcorn is a popular treat made out of corn kernels that have been ?popped‘ by heat. Often times, the popped corn is covered with melted butter and salt to give the snack more flavor. Popcorn has a history that goes back about 5,000 years ago to the American Indians. Corn was a major part of their diet, so they had many different ways of preparing it. They made popcorn by tossing prepared corn kernels onto a bed of hot stones over a fire. As the popcorn shot out in various directions, people made a game to see who could catch the most popcorn. Naturally, the prize was being able to enjoy this delicious snack. In fact, people loved the snack so much that they began to serve it with cream and sugar for breakfast. In the late 19th century, popcorn carts began appearing on almost every American street corner. These carts were big hits at fairs, carnivals, and expositions. Later on, home version of popcorn poppers became available, and the snack became even more popular. Not to mention, this was also around the time when popcorn was introduced to the movie theaters. One of the biggest innovations for popcorn was microwaveable popcorn. For people who did not want to go through the trouble of making popcorn at home, microwaveable popcorn was nice alternative. Today, there are many variations for eating popcorn. There‘s the classic buttered popcorn, the sweet alternative of caramel corn (where the popcorn is covered in a light coat of molasses), and others such as cheesy popcorn (popcorn covered in a layer of cheese dust). 64.
