This is achieved through the use of a turntable (转盘), which usually moves the food in a circle when it is pushed by those at the table. In this way, the food never has to be picked up and passed around the table. Instead, it remains in place on the lazy Susan. A lazy Susan may also be a part of a kitchen cabinet (橱柜). In this sense, the lazy Susan is a type of shelving unit within the cabinet that is able to turn around its axis(轴心) . One may turn the lazy Susan in order to find certain goods in storage. From the outside, a lazy Susan appears to be two cabinets that are located at a right angle (直角) to each another. When one of these cabinets is
pushed, however, both doors move and the lazy Susan is revealed inside. It is believed that Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan in the 18th century, though it was called “dumbwaiter” at that time. It is said that Jefferson invented the lazy Susan because his daughter complained she was always served last at table and, as a result, never found herself full when leaving the table. Others believe that Thomas Edison was the inventor, as he is believed to have invented the turntable for his phonograph (留声机). The turntable may have developed into the lazy Susan later. Regardless of who invented it, it wasn’t until 1917 that the term “lazy Susan” was used in an advertisement for the invention. In Britain, however, the term “dumbwaiter” is still used rather than “lazy Susan”. The reason for the naming of it is still a mystery. One theory is that it was named after either Jefferson’s or Edison’s daughter, both of whom were named Susan. 56. What is a “lazy Susan”? A. A waitress B. A table C. A cabinet D. A convenient tool 57. According to those who believed Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan, _______. A. Thomas Edison didn’t invent the phonograph B. Thomas Edison was his friend C. the lazy Susan didn’t exist until the 18th century D. his daughter was very lazy 58. We can learn from the last paragraph that ___________. A. the lazy Susan can work by itself B. how the lazy Susan got its name remains unknown C. the lazy Susan was named after Thomas Edison’s daughter D. the lazy Susan was invented in Britain B With the development of society, the choice of food and drinks for children is more diversified(多样化) than ever before. However, every coin has two sides. Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the statistics(数据统计). I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame（责怪）the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants then probably children would buy less take-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree to this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime（消遣）, it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as guiding them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits. 59. What is suggested by the author to deal with “overweight”? A. Living an active life and giving up bad eating habits. B. Blaming the shops selling unhealthy and fatty foods. C.Asking young children to walk to school every day. D. Not watching TV or playing computer games after school. 60. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?
61. The author writes the passage to ______________ A. show people a social problem B. provide facts for government C. advise solutions to a problem D. compare opinions with people
As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier, and on Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did. In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such a fun to stick your finger 'through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck on your fingers. On Dad's final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one member from each family was waiting at their mailbox to thank him for his friendship and his years of service. "Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route." he used to say, "and a story at every one." One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills. Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. One note left in a mailbox read. "Nat, take these eggs to Marian; she's baking a cake and doesn't have any eggs." Mailboxes might be buried in the snow, or broken, or lying on the ground, but the mail was always delivered. On cold days Dad might find one of his customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young wrote letters but had no stamps, so she left a few button on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank. Once, the amount came to $32,000. A dozen years ago, when I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad's death, the mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn't the case. As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around, those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green and the other was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes. I made a turn at the corner and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. So we all sat down at the table and began to tell stories.
At one point Frank looked at me with tears in his eyes. "What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?" he asked. "The letters?" "I guess you never knew. " "Knew what?" "Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year. " I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn't hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families. For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime. 62. It can be inferred from the passage that the writer regarded his travels with Dad as ________. A. great chances to help other people B. happy occasions to play with baby chickens C. exciting experience with a lot of fun D. good opportunities to enjoy chocolate cookies 63. The writer provides the detail about the businessman to show that ________. A. Dad had a strong sense of duty B. Dad was an honest and reliable man C. Dad had a strong sense of honor D. Dad was a kind and generous man 64. According to the passage, which of the following impressed the writer most? A. Dad read letters for a blind lady for years. B. Dad paid for the stamps for a young girl. C. Dad delivered some eggs to Marian. D. Dad answered children's Christmas letters every year. 65. The method the writer uses to develop Paragraph 4 is ________. A. providing explanations B. offering analyses C. giving examples D. making comparisons
第Ⅱ卷(共五大题；满分 45 分)
五、任务型阅读(共 10 小题；每小题 1 分，满分 10 分) Don’t complain in the NBA The NBA has a new rule this season. It’s called “zero tolerance”. NBA referees are not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a referee’s call. A player who does can be given a technical foul (犯规). Two technical fouls, and the player is out of the game. The players don’t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it. They think it’s only natural to get angry during a close, hard-fought game if a call goes against you. But I like the “zero tolerance” rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA’s example. Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable if football, soccer and tennis players stopped arguing the calls and just played the game? The biggest reason I like the new rule is that it sets a good example to younger players. When kids see stars such as Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons shouting at the referees and arguing
every call, they think it’s part of the game. But shouting at referees and arguing calls should never be part of any kid’s games. Kids should be taught to forget about the referees’ calls and pay attention to improving their skills and play their best. All players need to learn that you control only one thing in a game, and that’s your own performance. You can’t control what the other players or trainers do. And you certainly can’t control the calls the referees make. Finally, everyone from NBA all-stars to 8-year-olds should remember that being a basketball referee is a hard job. The referee has to make dozens of sudden calls. No hesitation. No second chances. Not even the best referee gets every call right. Maybe if the players, trainers and fans who shout at the referees had to wear a whistle and call a few games, there wouldn’t be as many complaints about the “zero tolerance” rule. The new rule The players are not (1) ▲ to complain too much about a referee’s call, otherwise he might be (2) ▲ out of the court. They (4) ▲ the new rule and wish it to be changed. And I think I can get a better buy on an old house. M: However, a cheap house means less modern conveniences. Why not get a new one? W: Well, Jeff can re-modern the old one. You know, he’s so skillful. Some of the new houses now have very small rooms. I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life in them. M: Aren’t you tired of keeping so many rooms clean every day? W: Not at all. Cleaning is a pleasure for me. Oh, here comes my bus. Bye! 听第 7 段材料，回答第 9~11 小题。 (Text 7) M: Hi, Jane. It’s nice to see you again. I heard that you went to the United Kingdom during the
vacation. W: Yes. I paid a visit to London and attended a summer course in English. M: Wow. It sounds so good. How long did you stay there? W: Well, I went there on July 5th and came back on August 15th. M: What about the course? W: I think the course was well organized. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English, but it mostly focused on speaking. One interesting thing I found was that the English classes were different from ours because they were very free. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. You can ask the teacher questions at any time during the class, and you are welcome to share your ideas with the classmates and teachers. I really enjoy this kind of class. M: How interesting! Maybe our teachers should try that. 听第 8 段材料，回答第 12~14 小题。 (Text 8) M: Hello, can I help you? W: Yes, I’d like to go on a sailing holiday this summer in Italy. M: Have you been sailing before? W: No. I wanted to go to Sweden last year, but I didn’t have enough money. M: Well, it is quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about three hundred pounds. W: Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds. M: Well, that should be enough. Would you like to be by the sea or a lake? W: Well, I’d prefer a lake in the mountains. M: Okay. The Aqua Center in north Italy will be best for you. That costs ￡370. W: Okay. Can I pay by credit card? I haven’t got my checkbook. M: Yes, that’s fine. 听第 9 段对话，回答第 15~17 小题。 （Text 9） M: Hi, Mrs. Smith. Nice to see you here. W: Hi, Mr. White. I’m here to buy a pair of shoes for Tom again. M: He wore out the pair you bought last month? W: Yes. Sometimes I think I should buy him a pair of iron shoes. M: Oh, no. What you need is a pair of strong and comfortable shoes. W: What’s your suggestion? M: Maybe you should buy him a pair of leather shoes. W: Tom doesn’t like leather shoes. M: Then, how about sports shoes? They are strong and comfortable. W: It seems that is the only choice. All right, I’ll take your suggestion. How about this pair? M: They are good. 听第 10 段材料，回答第 18~20 小题。 （Text 10） Well, generally speaking, we could say that there are four stages to culture shock. First of all, the “honeymoon” stage. Uh, to the visitor, everything seems new, different, and novel. The food, the surroundings, and the buildings. And it produces a feeling of excitement: a desire to look around, to
experiment, and to explore. The next stage is the “horror” stage, where the newness wears off, and the visitor sees the country from a different viewpoint, and often begins to criticize the country, the life, and values of the people. The next stage, we could say, is the “humor” stage, where people begin to reflect back and laugh at their mistakes in the earlier stages. And the final stage, we could say, is the “home” stage, where people begin to feel at home and enjoy living in that foreign country.
