A Almost no young people today know who the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit is, but they certainly recognize his successor, Bugs Bunny. Oswald, Bugs, and hundreds of other characters were created by Walt Disney, perhaps the most famous cartoonist in history. Born in Chicago in 1901,Walt Disney always wanted to be an artist. After returning from World War Ⅰ,in which he drove an ambulance,Disney worked as a commercial artist. He enjoyed drawing cartoons more than anything else, and decided to try his hand at a technology that was new at the time, moving pictures. In the 1920's, he produced several films where he made cartoon characters move as if by magic. The technique Disney used was painstaking. He made hundreds or even thousands of repeated drawings of the same character. In each drawing, the character was changed just a bit. A film was taken of the series of drawings, and when it was shown, the characters appeared to move. The process, called animation,is still used today, although computers have made the process much easier. In 1928,Disney created his most famous character,Mortimer Mouse, who we know today as Mickey. The mouse starred in a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, which was unusual because it involved the use of a sound track. Within the next few years, Disney invented many of his other characters. The list of Disney's animation successes is long and memorable. It includes Pinocchio,Dumbo,Bambi,Cinderella, and Peter Pan. Perhaps his most remarkable animated film is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Created in 1937,it was an immediate success. Today, more than fifty years later,it is still one of the most popular films for children. 56.What is one of the chief differences between animation today and in Walt Disney's early years? That question has puzzled scientists since 1833,when the first reports of “maneless” lions streamed in from around the world. Now,a research team reports that lions from the Tsavo region of Kenya deliberately delay mane growth to fit in with the region's harsh temperatures. John Patterson,a hunter and a British Colonel, was one of the first to document manelessness in Tsavo's famous maneaters. Ever since, naturalists have developed evolutionary descriptions. Some researchers suggested that lions lost their manes

because they were caught too many times in Tsavo's thorn bushes everywhere. Others argued that Tsavo's aggressive lions have unusually high testosterone (雄激素) levels, known to cause male pattern baldness (秃顶) in humans. Still others supposed that Tsavo's lions were a distinct group or were a related to a lion pictured in prehistoric caves, which no longer existed. But expert Thomas Gnoske at the Field Museum in Chicago,Illinois, considered something these researchers didn't:lions shipped to zoos in cooler climates grow longer manes. This made him wonder whether hot temperatures account for Tsavo's thinning lions. To find out, Gnoske and his colleagues studied museum records and conducted 10 years of fieldwork in Tsavo and in the Serengeti, which is about 10 degrees cooler. In an artick published online this month in the Journal of Zoology, the team reports that lions in the Serengeti grow a full mane in 5 years—by the time they're ready to be parents—but that Tsavo's lions don't have much of mane until age 8,well past their reproductive period. Gnoske thinks smaller manes improve a young, energetic lion's ability to keep cool. Bushy manes probably evolved to attract females in cooler climates where heat stress was not an issue,Gnoske says, and lions can't just turn off that_program,now that

they're in a place like Tsavo. “They're hardwired to grow a mane, and they'll develop as large a mane as they possibly can. ” Scientist Roland Kays of the New York State Museum in Albany says he is surprised by the delay in mane development. However,he expresses concern about the accuracy of using field observations to judge the age of Tsavo lions. Gnoske says his team is now focusing its research on Tsavo lions with known birth dates, but it will be a challenge to keep track of the wideranging animals, especially since radio collars are prohibited in Tsavo's national parks. 60.What does the passage mainly talk about? Why has jogging—running slowly for long distances become so popular? Most joggers begin because they hear it is a very good exercise. Jogging makes the heart stronger and helps people lose weight. It can also help them feel better about themselves. Donald Robbins, who is fortytwo years old and works in an office, began jogging a few years ago because he felt he was too fat. At first he could only run about 100 yards. It took him three months to be able to run a mile. But two years later,he ran in a marathon race over twentysix miles. Many joggers, like Donald Robbins, feel that if they can succeed at jogging, they can succeed at other things also, and quite often this feeling helps them at their jobs. Should you jog too?If you do,be sure to ask your doctor for advice. Jogging may be too much exercise for you.

Does jogging cost much? No,it costs almost nothing. But it is very important to have a good pair of shoes that are made especially for jogging. They protect your feet and legs from the shock of running on hard surface. How fast should you go?Jog with a friend and talk to each other as you run. If you have difficulty in talking, you're going too fast. How far should you jog?Remember not to go too far too soon. In fact, you should walk, not run, the first few times. Then do some short jogs, but no more than what you can do comfortably. After that, increase your distance a quarter or half a mile every two weeks or so. Maybe in a few years, you can run in a marathon too, thousands of people do. 64.The article is mainly about________. WASHINGTON—Extreme heat that has been baking much of the US Midwest and East Coast has eased on July 9, with rain and cooler temperatures reported in those parts of the country, while reports indicated the death toll of the heat wave has climbed to 74.

With cooler air swept southward in the eastern half of the country, the temperature has dropped from around 100 degrees Fahrenheit over the past two weeks to about 90 in most parts of the Midwest to the East Coast. In Washington,Monday was the first cool day after 11 days of sustained heat, with highs at 84 degrees. The relief began on Saturday night, as thunderstorms led to the cooler temperatures. In New Jersey, a line of strong, fastmoving storms knocked out power to nearly 70,000 on Saturday night. The heat was blamed for at least 74 deaths across the country in the past two weeks, according to NBC News, with states like Virginia and Illinois reporting double digit death toll. The heat wave has been nearunprecedented(几乎史无前例的)for several major cities. In Chicago, the temperature reached 100 degrees for three days from Wednesday through Friday, which ties historic record. St Louis' period of 10 continuous days of 100 or higher has only been topped by the Dust Bowl year of 1936 when the period was 13 days. Washington hit 100 on Sunday for the fourth continuous day, tying a record set July 19-22,1930. However,as the heat eases in the East, forecasters warned that a new round of record highs could soon bake Western states. 68.What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Heat wave eases in the US,death toll up B.Heat wave hits the US C.Cooler air swept the US D.More people died due to the heat 答案 A [主旨大意题。

Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is : “How do I get a good job?”__71__ There are people who can answer an insignificant advertisement in the local paper and land the best job in the world; others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get a reply at all. Still others believe that the in person, doortodoor approach is by far the best way to get a job;and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the right time. __72__

He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day,on his usual wandering,he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick. Without stopping to think, the lad(少年) offered to take his place. __73__ __74__ If the lad had gone home to ponder(考虑) his decision for a week,he may have missed his chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity; it is another thing to take it and use it well. Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs(美差).When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the company to which you are applying. __75__ And within a year this person had become general manger of the company. A.This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself. B.People find jobs in an infinite number of ways. C.it's almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisement in newspapers. D.Take for example the young man who wanted to be a sailor. E.But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the company's faults. F.He spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved. G.It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself. 75.E [从此短的论点“Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land plum jobs”便能看出,只有选与此空前面的观点相反 的选项 E,才能和后面的结果相符合。] 第Ⅱ卷

What excited me most was the roller coaster. It was running so fast that I could only feel strong wind sweeping my face and hear the screams of other people. The float parade and performances were really a feast for my eyes. This visit brought me great excitement and a new experience and I had lots of fun here.
