As a kid,I felt my happiness would be based on whether I could fulfill all my needs and wants. If I was rich,I would definitely be content with my life. My father always stressed his belief in happiness. I can remember him lecturing me about how money does not make one happy and how other things in life such as health, family, friends, and memorable experiences make a person genuinely happy. At that time in my life,I did not put any thought into his words as usual. At a young age,I noticed the media seemed to portray(描绘) the wealthy as happy people that add value to our society. At high school I still sought a career that would produce a high salary. After my second year of college, I started my first job in an accounting department, where I found myself extremely bored. Every day I had to do boring work. In addition,I had to live away from friends and family. I noticed having money to spend when you are by yourself was not satisfying. I began to think back to what my dad always said. After two months on the job,I truly realized that a more satisfying experience for me would have been doing an ordinary parttime job for far less money. No matter how high the salary of this position was,I would never be capable of fulfilling a happy life and making a career out of this job. As the summer drew to a close,I truly understood the meaning of my dad’s words. The term “wealth” is a broad term, and I believe the key to happiness is to become wealthy in great memories, friends, family, and health. 21.Through his experience, the author wanted to tell us that________. A.young people should listen to their parents B.money cannot always bring you real happiness C.one should be careful in choosing his first job D.one can learn much by doing a parttime job 22.When the author was a kid,________. A.he suffered a lot from being poor B.it worried him whether he could live happily C.he didn’t treat his father’s advice seriously

D.his attitude to life was greatly influenced by his father 23.What do we know about the author and his first job? A. He decided to make it his lifelong career. B.He got the job with the help of his friends. C.He didn’t earn enough money to support himself. D.He got no happiness although it was well-paid.

Read a lot, I mean a lot! You have to increase your ability for reading. Many students are in the habit of reading only when their exams are approaching while some others read only what they are taught or things that must be read because it is in their curriculum. But listen to me now, I am telling you from my own experience that it is a very bad habit and it is not enough to improve your intelligence. You have to learn and get ready to become versatile in your reading. The fact that you are studying medicine in school does not mean that you should not know one or two things on politics. Many people have complained to me that they find it hard to read stuffs like novels but I just shake my head in pity for them because it is obvious they have failed to realize the truth in that wise saying by Margaret Fuller that “today a READER, tomorrow a LEADER!” When you read, you get to “see” so many places and it will be as if you have visited those places in real life. This is because reading will improve your imagination and creativity and understanding. You also get experience from learning about how people dealt with their various problems thereby saving you from going through the pains and difficulties they must have gone through! Reading will also help you in improving your vocabulary because you will certainly start coming across so many new words which you will try as much as possible to get accustomed to with the help of the dictionary! The good thing about increasing your vocabulary is that it will also improve your thinking ability. After all, we think in words and the more words you know, the easier it will become for you to express yourself or your thoughts. And when you read, make sure you read so wide because the more you read, the more you know and the more you know the more intelligent you can become. 24. What is the best title for the passage? A. Increase your ability for reading B. Read wide and improve your vocabulary C. Reading improves your intelligence D. Reading makes you a leader tomorrow 25. According to the author, what should students do in terms of reading? A. They needn’ t read unless the exams come. B. They should read books about intelligence. C. They must read about politics when their major is medicine. D. They should read as wide as possible.

26. The underlined word “versatile” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____. A. interested B. many-sided C. content D. confident 27. What is the benefit of knowing more words? A. You will get used to referring to the dictionary when meeting with new words. B. You will have less difficulty expressing your opinions. C. Vocabulary will improve your creativity. D. You can pass your exams with ease.

I was driving home the other day on a sunny afternoon. I had a smile on my face as I sang along to the songs on the radio. It was such a beautiful day that I felt full of happiness. My good mood ended, however, when the radio station took a news break between songs. Then suddenly I found myself listening to yet another story of a rich famous man who had broken the law. I shook my head as I came to a red traffic light. As I pulled to a stop I noticed four leatherjacketed bikers. They were standing in the middle of the road with two on either side of the light. They looked rough and dangerous, but as I got closer I noticed each one was holding their helmet in their hands. I rolled down my window as one approached my car. “We are the Brother of the Wheel,” he said. “We are collecting money for Christmas Toy Drive for needy children.” As I pulled a dollar out of my wallet I looked past his beard and into his eyes. They shined with goodness and kindness that came right from his soul. I dropped the money in his helmet and waved to the other bikers as I drove off. My good mood had returned. My faith in mankind had been bolstered. And I remembered once again never to judge people by their appearance. Our society often judges books by their covers but God reads what is written in our hearts and souls. Perhaps one day we will all learn to see the world through the same eyes. Perhaps one day we will realize that looks matter little and actions matter much. 32.The writer wants to tell us that we should ________. A.have faith in young people B.judge others by their actions C.change our attitude to society D.manage to help others in need 33.The writer’s good mood ended when ________. A.he heard news between songs B.he had to stop at a red traffic light C.he heard a rich man broke the law D.he saw four leatherjacketed bikers 34.What were the four bikers doing at the traffic lights? A.Having a bicycle race in the street. B.Selling helmets to the passersby. C.Raising money to help kids in need. D.Preparing for Christmas holidays. 35.What does “bolstered” in the second paragraph probably mean?

B.Improved. C.Decreased.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 3 分,共 15 分)

Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or the other, you’ll have to stand up and say – problem, I don’t want you in my life. 36 Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children – the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings. But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems. Talk, it really helps. What most of us think is that our problem can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help. 37 Talking helps you move on and let go. Write your problems. 38 When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life. Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money, family… you should still have faith. 39 Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problem you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours. 40 Your problems might just seem big and worse, but in reality they can be removed. Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out. A. But the truth is that when you talk about it, you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you. B. When we have a problem, a pressing, critical, urgent, life-threatening problem, how do we try and solve it? C. Tell yourself when they can deal with them, why can’t I? D. Of course, we’ve been fighting problems ever since we were born. E. We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. F. Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. G. With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose.
