He was one of the people who made Silicon Valley(硅谷) the capital of technological invention. Author and business consultant Jim Collins once called Jobs the “Beethoven of business”. When asked what Steve Jobs will be best remembered for, many of us would name a particular product: the iPod, the iPhone or the iPad, for example. But in the eyes of Eric Jackson, a reporter with Forbes magazine, Jobs brought the world much more than these popular devices(装置). Here are some of the lessons he taught us:

1. The most lasting inventions mix art and science. Jobs pointed out that the team members working with Apple were trained in anthropology(人类学), art, history, and poetry. He believed this was important in making Apple’s products stand out. 2. Never fear failure. Jobs was fired by the successor he himself chose. It was one of the most

public embarrassments (尴尬) of the last 30 years in business. However, Jobs didn’t hide away or try to get a new job. He picked himself up and got back to work. 3. You can’t look forward to connecting the dots—you can only look backward. This means that, however much we try to plan things ahead of time, life is always full of unexpected things. What seems like bitter pain and defeat could turn out to sow the seeds of unimaginable success in years to come. You can’t connect the dots looking forward. But you have to trust that all the dots will be connected in the future. 4. Listen to that voice in tile back of your head that tells you if you’re on the right track or not. Most of us simply decide that we’re going to work in finance or become a doctor because it's what our parents tell us to do. Whatever your voice is telling you, it is smart to listen to it—like Jobs did. Just as Caroline and Amy from his empire put it, “Steve was one of the most inspiring yet toughest boss ever—but who else could have built Apple? What Steve left is sure to inspire generations of creative thinkers to think differently. His influence will be felt throughout the world.” 53. From the passage, we learn that __________. A. What does the phrase “picked himself up”(Paragraph 3) most probably mean? A. Became excited. B. Refused to talk. C. Got others’ help. D. Cheered himself up. 56. What’s the writer's main purpose of writing the passage? A. To introduce readers the life story of Steve Jobs. B. To tell readers Steve Jobs is the “Beethoven of business”. C. To encourage readers to learn from Steve Jobs’ life experience. D. To persuade readers that they shouldn’t always-follow what parents tell them to do. C Music is really powerful. Without music, movies would lose some of their attraction. No one disagree with the powerful effect music has on individuals. Whether this effect is positive or negative, however, often depends on the type of music listened to. And researches have shown that certain types of music own the ability to relieve one’s anxiety, improve brain development in children, uplift one’s memory and help patients to recover...just to name a few. It should come as no surprise then, that researchers from the Tufts University have found that background music has the ability to directly affect one’s eating habits as well. They counted the bites of food individuals took at meals while listening to different types of music. The diners “ate at an average (平均)rate of 3.9 bites per minute”, with about a third of the diners requesting more food after clearing their plates. On the other hand, with “spirited tunes, ”the diners “sped up to an average of 5.1 bites per minute! ”Not surprising however, when “calming flute instrumental” were

played, the eating speed of the diners slowed “to 3.2 bites per minute—and the bites became smaller”. They didn’t request second helpings and praised that the food tasted better. Studies have clearly stated that one safe way of losing weight includes eating slowly. Since it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell the brain that it's full, eating slowly will help you to eat to satisfaction—without overdoing it. With this important piece of information then, it leads one to believe that with the use of calming background instrumental music, one can slow their food digestion, “retraining” both the stomach and the brain to take in less food which could lead to weight lost. Is there any truth to this theory? One will never know unless they try it themselves. Even if it doesn't work for you, at least you’ll achieve a bit of relaxing and pleasant environment during your meal periods. A great meal with great music—who could ask for anything more? 57. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of listening to certain types of music according to the passage? A. Strengthening one’s body. B. Easing one’s anxiety. C. Increasing one’s memory. D. Improving children’s brain development. 58. The research reported from the Tufts University showed that __________. A. background music makes the food served delicious and lovely B. the types of music people listened to could exactly show their eating habits C. background music could produce a comfortable eating environment for people D. background music could influence people’s eating speed and how much they eat 59. Music can help people lose weight by __________. A. burning their fat B. slowing their eating speed C. changing their attention D. making them bored with food 60. Which of the following statements agrees with the writer ’s view in the passage? A. People will eat less if they don’t like the background music. B. Every type o f music has the power to affect people positively. C. Most of the restaurants now offer background music for their customers. D. Though we’re not sure whether listening to music can help lose weight, it’s worth a try. D One day a woman spotted a beggar sitting on the corner. The man was elderly, unshaven and ragged. Passers-by wanted nothing to do with him. But the woman smiled. “Are you hungry?” she asked. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly used to the finer things in life. Her coat was new. She looked like that she had never missed a meal in her life. “No, ” he answered sarcastically(讥讽地). “I’ve just come from dining with the president. Now go away. ”To his surprise, the woman continued standing. And her smile became even broader. “What are you doing, lady?” he asked angrily. “I said to leave me alone. ” Just then a policeman came up. “Is there any problem, ma’am?” He asked. “No problem here, officer,” the woman answered. “I’m just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?” The officer scratched(抓) his head. “That’s old Jack. He’s been around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?” “See that cafeteria over there?” She asked. “I’m going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold. ”

“Are you crazy, lady? I don’t want to go in there!” Then the homeless felt strong hands lift him up. “Let me go, officer. I didn’t do anything.” “This is a good deal for you, Jack, ”the officer answered. “Don’t blow it. ” Finally, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived. The woman turned to the officer, “Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?” “Yes, ma’am. That would be very nice. ” Then, she sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him. “Jack, do you remember me?” Old Jack searched her face. “I think so —I mean you do look familiar. ” “I’m Penelope Eddy. I’m a little older perhaps, ”she said. “In my younger days when you worked here, I came through that very door, cold and hungry. ” “I was just out of college, ”the woman continued. “I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn’t find anything. Finally I was down to my last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment. I walked down the streets, saw this place and came in to see if I could get something to eat. ” Jack lit up with a smile. “Now I remember,” he said. “I was behind the serving counter. ” “You made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen and you paid for it out of your own money. ” “I got a job that very afternoon. Eventually I started my own business. ”She pulled out a business card. “When you are finished here, I want you to meet the personnel director of my company. I’m certain he’ll find something for you to do around the office. ” There were tears in the old man’s eyes. “How can I ever thank you, ”he said. “Don’t thank me. ”the woman answered. “Thank the Universe. It led me to you. ” Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways. “Thank you for all your help, officer, ”she said. “On the contrary, Ms. Eddy,” he answered. “Thank you. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And thank you for the coffee. ” She frowned. “I forgot to ask you whether you take sugar. That’s black. ” “Yes. I do. ”the officer said. “But I don’t need it now. I’m sure the coffee you bought me is going to taste as sweet as sugar. ” 61. Why did Jack refuse Eddy’s invitation at first? A. Because he thought she was just making fun of him. B. Because he was not hungry and wanted to be left alone. C. Because he thought rich people made him poor and hated them. D. Because he was afraid the policeman would think he was going to hurt her. 62. The underlined sentence “I was down to my last few cents” most probably means “_______”. A. I felt upset B. Firstly, it is important for us to keep a balanced diet and do some exercise regularly. Don’t always stay indoors with air conditioners on. Secondly, do remember to finish your homework in time and spend more time on the subjects you are weak in so that you can be better prepared for the next term. Besides, try to find as much time as possible to read famous works. If possible, spare some time for your hobbies or go sightseeing with your family or friends. M:No, I forgot some papers this morning. Text 2 W:Hello. This is Linda from the post office. Is Jimmy at home? M:No. He’s at the hospital, but he will be back home at four o’clock. Text 3 W:You can’t wear that, John. It’s black. M:What’s wrong with a black shirt? Everyone has a black shirt. W:It doesn’t look like you’re going to a party. Text 4 W:I hear the old people there are taken good care of. M:But three hundred and sixty-five days in a strange country seems like a very long time to me. Text 5 W:I think history is far more interesting than physics. M:I really can’t agree with you. I prefer physics. Text 6 W:Happy birthday, Tom. Are you ready for the next present? M:You mean there’s more besides the bike. W:Come with us. It’s in the car. Now, here we are. You’ve been talking about this for a month. M:Oh. it's a new computer. It's just what I want. W:Oh, I want it to arrive earlier than that. I’ll mail it first class. I’ll also buy ten 60-cent stamps. M:Let’s see. Your total bill is $16.20. W:Thank you. Have a nice day. Text 8 W:Could you do something for me, please? M:Certainly! What would you like me to do? W:Well, do you know I'm going to Florida next week for a holiday? M:Yes. W:Well. I can’t take the bird with us. Could you look after her for me while we’re away? M:With pleasure. W:Are you sure you don’t mind? M:Yes, of course, I’m sure. I'd love to look after her. Glad to help! What do I have to do? W:I’ve written everything down on this list. M:Good, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of her. W:I’m sure you will. Text 9 W:OK! When we met last week, we talked about different kinds of short stories and some well-known short story writers. I remember that many of you said you liked the American writer Earnest Hemingway, right? I hope you all followed my advice and finished reading his story “A day’s wait”, because as I said, we’re going to study it together in today’s lesson. Now since you’re supposed to have read this story, let’s have some discussion. Please look at the four questions on the blackboard. First, when and where does the story take place? Second, what does the boy read for in the story and what kind of person does he show himself to be? Third, what kind of person is the boy’s father? Fourth, what is the writer ’s main purpose of writing the story? I’d like you to work in groups of four or five and present your answers in ten minutes. Is everything clear?
