Workpiece processing from 5 sides in just one setup As the workpieces can be placed flat onto the MAGNOS magnetic chuck, all five sides of the workpiece can be easily accessed and worked on in a single setup.

Shortest possible setup times and a resulting increase in productivity With MAGNOS, the workpiece can be clamped within seconds. It is no longer necessary to spend time on the fine adjustment of the clamping elements or on changing the setup of the workpiece while it is being processed – nor are time--intensive setup periods and machine downtimes required.

This improves surface finishes and increases precision significantly. Low investment outlays, flexible and independent MAGNOS can be used independently from the type of machine, does not require any previous planning and does not depend on a technology system or any specific system interfaces. Interventions in the machine programming are not necessary.

Radial pole pitch for circular grinding and turning The radial pole technology offers excellent solutions for the grinding of thin--walled rings on circular tables and circular grinding machines. The workpiece is completely captured – without deforming and changing the part to be machined.

ELECTROPERMANENT MAGNETIC CLAMPING TECHNOLOGY Function and mode of operation
SCHUNK’s electropermanent magnetic clamping technology is based on a fundamental physical phenomenon: magnetism, the power of which is harnessed precisely and in a controlled fashion for clamping purposes by MAGNOS. The development of the electropermanent cycle enabled the perfect synthesis of permanent magnets and electromagnetic forces. The resulting advantages far surpass traditional magnetic clamping technology as well as electromagnetic clamping technology. Magnetism in general Magnetism expresses itself as a repelling and attracting force exerted between magnets, magnetizable objects, and current--carrying conductors. Magnetism is mainly limited to a small number of materials, especially iron, cobalt, and nickel (ferromagnetism).

Electropermanent magnetic clamping technology – constant clamping force Within a fraction of a second and with a once--off input of energy, the force bond between the magnetic chuck and the workpiece is generated. No further, ongoing energy input is required. The workpiece remains permanently, evenly, and safely clamped for an unlimited time after the control unit has been disconnected.

Magnetic double cycle Static permanent magnets are arranged along the sides of the poles, while invertible magnets are situated underneath the poles. The coils around the invertible magnets briefly generate an electromagnetic field, which inverts the magnets within fractions of a second. The complete magnetic field of the square pole plates can thus either be directed outwards to magnetize the workpiece (clamping phase) or short--circuited in the interior of the plate (release phase), thereby clearing the clamping surface of any magnetic flux.

Optimum magnetic clamping force In order to maximize the magnetic clamping force, the area of flux should be as large as possible. The workpiece has to cover at least one north and one south pole (partially). As a general rule: the bigger the surface or the more poles are covered by the workpiece, the stronger the magnetic clamping force. When clamping larger workpieces, it is not strictly necessary to ensure that the same number of north and south poles is covered (see residual magnetism page 14) . For example: 1 MAGNOS plate provides a clamping force of about 18 t, with an air gap of 0 and 48 poles with 15.2 daN/cm? each 1 pole = 50 mm x 50 mm = 25 cm? 48 x (25 cm? x 15.2 daN/cm?) = 18 240 daN Increase in clamping force as more poles are covered

MAGNOS AT WORK Magnetic force just where you need it
No magnetism on the machining surface The magnetic streamlines of the field intrude to a certain depth into the workpiece. Thus, no magnetism occurs on the workpiece surface. No magnetic transfer to tools or machines The plates’ frame--based structure serves as a conductor grid for the magnetic flux and simultaneously insulates the magnetically activated areas from the machining table. As the workpiece does not become magnetized beyond the magnetic contact area, you may rest assured that your tools will not become magnetized. Swarf removal is guaranteed The magnetic flux is present only at the square poles or at the parts of the square poles covered by the workpiece. In addition, the magnetic isolation prevents adhesion of chips. Even the sides of the workpiece that are in contact with the magnetic clamp show hardly any magnetism, ensuring hassle--free chips removal even here. No heating of the workpiece and the magnetic chuck The square poles are inverted or activated using only a very brief current input. The magnetic force remains available for an unlimited time without additional power consumption. Residual magnetism (remanence) The residual magnetism that is generated in the workpiece when it is clamped using electro--permanent magnetic chucks is very low. In order to minimize the workpiece magnetism as much as possible, it is important to use the same number of north and south poles, i.e. the same number of poles should be covered by the workpiece. If the number of poles is unequal, a small degree of residual magnetism will occur in the workpiece. This can, however, be elimi? nated using a demagnetizing device.

The workpiece is placed on the MAGNOS magnetic chuck. Using the entire clamping surface enables the workpiece to be machined from 5 sides in a single setup.

Simplicity itself: the MAGNOS control unit and the MAGNOS magnetic chuck are connected to the power supply using the sealed quick--release connector.

The magnetic field is activated by pressing the appropriate button. The force connection between the magnetic chuck and the workpiece is built up within seconds. The workpiece is clamped permanently, evenly, and safely.

Remove the quick--release connector. The magnetic chuck is self--sufficient: without troublesome connections, without further energy consumption. The magnetic clamping force holds the workpiece constantly and for an unlimited time.

Just as quickly, the workpiece can be released from the magnetic chuck. Attach the quick lock, manually press the red key – the magnetic field is inverted, i.e. deactivated, and the workpiece can be removed.

THE STRUCTURE OF MAGNOS The sum of its details makes it unique
MAGNOS is a high--performance electropermanent magnetic system. It consists of the highest quality square poles, which are arranged as north and south poles in a chessboard formation. The square poles are magnetically independent and consist of a steel core surrounded on four sides by non--invertible permanent magnets (neodymium). Located below is the reversable AlNiCo magnet. Advanced production processes, permanent quality controls and the fulfillment of the CE standard as well as international standards guarantee a perfect product quality and a long lifetime – without wear and tear or maintenance expenditures.

Base plate The solid steel base plate is built as a monoblock on the most modern machining centers. Its stability, rigidity, and robustness prevent vibrations during operations and thereby help ensure excellent results as well as a long lifespan for the magnetic chuck.

Electromagnetic coil with AlNiCo magnet The magnetic chucks contain numerous electro-magnetic coils, which surround an invertible AlNiCo magnet. The perfectly uniform coil winding and an additional, special insulation ensure a controlled and stable magnetic flux.

Square poles The stable MAGNOS square poles, which are made of steel with a galvanized surface, are solidly affixed to the electromagnetic coil. The bore in the middle of the square poles serves to fix the pole extensions and accessories to the surface of the plate.

Sealing The MAGNOS square poles are surrounded by high performance permanent magnets (neodymium), which are not invertible. Because of a special vacuum sealing process the pole interstices are filled with high strength resin free of air pockets. This protects the components inside the plate from corrosion. The resin is also resistant against aggressive cooling emulsions.

Gentle clamping means no deformations Thin--walled or sensitive workpieces are clamped gently yet safely by the magnetic clamping force of MAGNOS. The workpiece neither warps nor twists, nor is it crushed because of force applied to a point. Surfaces are protected from the type of damage that may result when using traditional clamping technologies. Adapts perfectly to the contours of the workpiece Workpieces of any structure can be perfectly clamped using MAGNOS pole extensions. The pole extensions adapt perfectly to the contours of the workpiece – the workpiece is supported and rests solidly on the extensions, enabling it to be processed from all 5 sides.

MAGNOS – THE KEH CONTROL UNIT
The electronic MAGNOS control units allow you to activate or deactivate the magnetic chucks. A ?specially sealed quick-release connector, which is integrated into the control units, connects the unit to the magnetic chuck. The control unit is characterized by its compact and robust construction and ease of use. The control units are default-fitted with a manual control, but can be fitted with a robust, industrial--grade remote control upon request. Depending on the size or ?configurations* of the magnetic chucks, they are available as 1, 2 or 4 channel versions.

FIXED POLE EXTENSIONS Perfect support for workpieces
MAGNOS fixed pole extensions guarantee that the magnetic chuck surface molds itself naturally to the workpiece, which makes them perfect for machining smooth or pre--machined workpieces. They also improve the maneuvering space for machining, for instance when milling edges or drilling through. The magnetic force of the magnetic chuck is designed to ensure that the pole extensions effectively transmit the magnetic force, enabling even complex workpieces to be clamped safely. Using the pole extensions is very simple. They can be placed variably and quickly onto the square poles, thereby forming a perfect support for workpieces of different sizes. MAGNOS pole extensions can be provided in different dimensions.

FUNCTION OF THE EASYTURN POLE EXTENSIONS For vertical or horizontal use
Owing to the unique modular construction of the EASYTURN pole extensions, the magnetic clamping force can be redirected along the horizontal or vertical axis, depending on the way the workpiece is to be clamped. This flexible axis shift in two directions is made possible by the combination of a fixed pole with a spring core, a buffer zone, and a switchover coupling. Depending on the setting, the flexible upper part of the pole adapts to the workpiece through a diagonal movement upwards or to the side.

TYPES AND CONFIGURATIONS
■ Magnetic chucks type MFR-A1 and MFR-A2 for maximum clamping force MAGNOS magnetic chucks are available in two different plate types, MFR-A1 and MFR-A2. The version MFR-A1 with high density of the magnetic field is enough for approx. 80 % of the applications. Version MFR-A2 offers an even higher density of the penetrating magnetic field in the workpiece. Result: for larger air gaps, as can be found for workpieces with uneven surfaces (cast parts, uneven shaped parts), more magnetic lines stay in contact with the workpiece for version MFRA2.

■Square pole sizes for customized workpiece clamping We offer three square pole dimensions for plate types MFR-A1 and MFR-A2, thereby catering to a broad range of clamping applications. The different performance specifications of the square pole dimensions depend on the workpiece that is to be clamped and the machining operation. The key para?meters are the thickness, weight, surface, geometry, and size of the workpiece. SCHUNK MAGNOS pole size 32 This type with square poles 32 x 32 mm is used for the machining of small and thin workpieces. SCHUNK MAGNOS pole size 50 This type, with 50 x 50 mm square poles, is characterized by its extraordinary flexibility in clamping. It is perfectly suited for machining small workpieces or workpieces with thin walls (with minimum thickness of 8 mm and more). Highly complex workpieces can be clamped more easily and more flexibly because the poles are comparatively small. SCHUNK MAGNOS pole size 75 The working surface is fitted with 75 x 75 mm square poles. All MAGNOS electropermanent magnetic chucks are modular in nature. Depending on the application or type of machine, they can be combined or extended in accordance with the modular design principle. By combining several magnetic chucks, large clamping areas can be created, for instance for large worktables.

Parallel pole technology Function and mode of operation
MAGNOS electropermanent magnetic chucks with parallel pole technology are magnet plates poled in longitudinal direction for a quick and safe magnetic fastening by design. Because of the combination of permanent magnets and electric coils they are ideally suited for the use during grinding or turning and guarantee maximum precision during machining. Thanks to its low overall height, the low dead weight and the resulting low table load, the MAGNOS parallel pole technology is universally applicable. Different pole pitch variants facilitate the most diverse machining jobs and realize an optimum magnetic flux concentration in the workpiece to be machined thus obtaining an excellent clamping result. A single energy supply builds up the force link between the magnetic chuck and the workpiece within seconds. Additional continuous energy supply is not required. The workpiece is clamped permanently, uniformly and securely – even during power failure – for an undetermined period of time after the control unit is dis?connected. The multi level holding force regulation eases the alignment of the workpieces.

Setup The base body made of steel is produced in monoblock design. Its extreme stability, rigidity and robustness prevent vibrations during the operation and thus provide for an excellent machining result as well as for a long service life of the magnetic chucks. The magnetic parts and coils are assembled during the course of a modern and automated pro?cess control. Filling The resin coating performed under vacuum guarantees a unique insulation and magnetic service life of each plate. Because of this special high-end sealing process the pole interstices are filled with high-strength resin which protects the components inside the plate from corrosion. For less thermal expansion the pole interstices are filled with brass.

Active and passive poles Parallel pole magnet plates consist of active and passive poles, thus including the frame of the plate in the magnetic flux. Only the passive poles can be machined, e.g. for mounting the base body to the machine, for fastening adapters and for through holes.

The magnetic field is only effective when the magnetic flux can concentrate as complete as possible on the workpiece to be clamped. When the magnetic power exceeds the strength of the workpiece for field depth reasons, the holding force reduces and may no longer be sufficient for the machining p ? rocess. In general the following applies: Greater pole distances produce greater depth effect of the magnetic field and are ideal for thick or large workpieces. Narrow pole distances produce flat lines of force and are therefore used for thin or small workpieces.

Several magnet plates of the same or different size can be combined to one large plate field. The entire planning and production of plates however depends on the configuration of the machine on which the row of plates is installed. Plate fields are available upon request.

PERMANENT MAGNETic chucks (manually activated)
Permanent magnetic chucks with lever are ideally suited for grinding, eroding, measuring and polishing. The activation of the magnetic flux is not accomp?lished with electric power supply but with the mechanical shifting of the magnet core inside the magnet plate with the help of a lever. In doing so, the pole pieces of the magnet cores are positioned precisely opposite the poles of the pole plate. In this position the magnetic force is maintained for an indefinite period of time. To deactivate, the magnet cores are shifted in such a way that the magnetic flux takes place only in the magnet plate. Permanent magnetic chucks with lever are available for various applications with the most diverse pole pitch variants and are suitable for individual as well as multiple clamping. The pole pitch is oriented on the thickness and material of the workpiece. The following applies: the higher the flow density of the magnetic fields at the contact surfaces to the workpiece the higher the holding force. Type/Material

Laminated BLOCKS
Laminated blocks are non-magnetic elements, however they do transfer the magnetic flux that is present on the plate directly to the workpiece to be machined. They are simply placed on top of the plate whereas its pole flux must correspond to that of the plate. With the help of laminated blocks workpieces with complicated geometry or protruding parts can be machined without any problems and a variety of machining operations, such as through holes can be performed. V-shaped blocks (BL 20) are used as clamps for cylindrical or angular workpieces. The laminated blocks may be individually machined for a formfitting fixation.

Radial pole technology Function and mode of operation
MAGNOS electropermanent magnetic chucks with radial pole pitch are designed for grinding and turning operations of thin-walled rings on circular tables and circular grinding machines. Since the magnetic field is active up to the outer most zones the workpiece is completely captured and a deformation or change in the parts to be machined is prevented. T-grooves and boreholes may be machined into the pole plate for accommodating pole shoes. The use of pole shoes facilitates circular grinding of rings in the outer and inner diameter as well as on the face in one clamping. The holding force regulation for easier workpiece alignment is variable by way of the control, and for the permanent magnetic chucks by way of a control lever.

Two technologies in one: the ROTA NCM from SCHUNK combines a classic centringchuck and a round magnetic clamping plate. The result: ROTA NCM reduces set-up times for pneumatically actuated grinding and turning machines by up to 80 percent, thereby providing a clearly perceptible productivity boost. Due to the large-surface clamping, the workpieces retain their shape. Machining can take place from as many as three sides, completely free of vibration and deformation.

Completely deformation-free clamping
Whereas classic 3 or 6 jaw chucks always exert a radial force on the workpiece, which can lead to deformation, ROTA NCM uses magnetism to clamp the workpiece over a large surface, thereby avoiding any distortion.

Centred in seconds
Unlike classic magnetic discs, ROTA NCM centres the workpiece in seconds. Previously, operators had to align workpieces manually with a dial gauge in a complex operation; SCHUNK‘s hybrid chuck now completes this task in a fraction of the time with maximum precision. This rules out operator errors, increases reliability and noticeably improves the workpiece quality. Productivity can be increased considerably due to the significantly reduced machine downtimes. This well designed chuck enables completely automated grind-ing machine operation. ROTA NCM is also suitable for hard and precision turning.

Secure grip thanks to permanent magnets
The clamping is easy to understand and simply designed. The workpiece is inserted manually or automatically, centred precisely to a reference value by three or six chuck jaws and then securely clamped by the electro-permanent magnets. All that is required to activate and deactivate the magnets is electrical current. During the machining itself, the permanent radial pole magnets provide a completely secure grip on the workpiece without any electrical current. The magnets can be activated with varying output categories. The entire clamping process can be fully automated.

Completely sealed
The chuck‘s maximum gripping force and speed depend on the geometry of the workpiece and the material used. They are calculated individually for each application. The workpiece can be centred by three or six chuck jaws, either from inside or outside. In addition to the magnetic clamping, the chuck jaws can also be used to assist the clamping force. The completely sealed ROTA NCM hybrid chuck is available in sizes from 400 to 1600 mm.

In some industrial areas work pieces have to have a low value of residual magnetism. Depending on the size of the work piece, table demagnetisation units, where pieces will be demagnetized by hand, or fully automated tunnel demagnetisation units are used.
