21. What’s the advantage of cycling with a group? A. Meeting more new people. B. Participating in whatever events. C. Having bicycles free of charge. D. Enjoying discounts in a gym. 22. We can infer from the passage that the aim of EBTC is ________. A. to call for governments to produce more bicycles B. to make money by organizing bicycling trips C. to popularize cycling by attracting more members D. to look for young volunteers for sporting events 23. How many ways can people gain more information from EBTC according to the passage? A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five. B When I was a high school student, mathematics looked like a big hurdle(障碍)for me and several of my classmates. When we reached the ninth class, We got Mr. Iyer, a strict maths teacher who was also our class teacher. He always stuck to his discipline. We had to arrive on time, pay undivided attention to his lectures, and dared not neglect any of his homework. Even so, as our class teacher, we got to know him better. Noticing some of us fidgeting one day as the mid-term exams approached, he stopped solving a mathematical problem to ask us why. “There’s too much to do,” we sighed. “We’re afraid we’ll never manage to finish our revision before the exams.” “Nothing is impossible,” Mr. Iyer told us. “This classroom is on the second floor. Do you have a problem reaching here?” We reacted with blank stares. “No, you don’t !” he said, answering his own question. “You have a staircase to help you climb up to this level. No one expects you to make it-in two giant leaps. You simply take one step at a time. Any task can be solved if you focus on the immediate action to be taken. The rest will take care of itself, if you keep at it. One step at a time. That’s the secret.” Then he wrote down an old motto on the blackboard — the longest journey starts with a single step. Having heard his staircase analogy(比拟), we understood why he asked us the question and we saw him in a new light. Most of my classmates scored distinctions in maths. And I went on to become an English teacher. To this day, whenever I pass on Mr. Iyer’s invaluable advice to my own students, they brighten up at the prospect of a lighter academic burden. 24. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. Maths was difficult for most of the author’s classmates. B. The students thought Mr. Iyer was not a good teacher. C. Mr. Iyer would punish the students neglecting his discipline. D. The students showed great fear to Mr. Iyer. 25. The underlined word “fidgeting” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A. excited B. nervous C. hardworking D. calm 26. Why did the author and his classmates react with blank stares?
2

A. Because they were too tired to understand what Mr. Iyer said. B. Because they felt surprised at such an unbelievable problem. C. Because they had no interest in any subjects that were no good for their exams. D. Because they first thought reaching the second floor had no connection with the worry. 27. The staircase analogy implies that ________. A. goals can be reached step by step B. one can reach his/her goals in a giant leap C. tasks can be solved under the guide of the teacher D. there is only one step between success and failure C Some problems are difficult to solve. But there are a lot of number expressions that can help. For example, if we put two and two together, we might come up with the right answer. We know that two heads are better than one. It is always better to work with another person to solve a problem. Some problems have only one solution. You cannot be of two minds over this. But with any luck, we can solve the problem in two shakes of a lamb’s tail. In other words, we could have our answers quickly and easily. Sometimes we can kill two birds with one stone. That is, we can complete two goals with only one effort or action. But we must remember that two wrongs don’t make a right. If someone does something bad to you, you should not do the same to him. If you are going out with your girlfriend, or boyfriend, but you don’t want another friend to go along on your date, you can just say to your friend: two’s company, three’s a crowd. When I was a young child in school, I had to learn the three R’s. These important skills are reading, writing and arithmetic. These three words do not all start with the letter “R”. But they have the sound of “R”. My teacher used to give three cheers when I did well in maths. They gave praise and approval for a job well done. Some of my friends were confused and did not understand their schoolwork. They were at sixes and sevens. In fact, they did not care if they finished high school. But they were happy when they completed their studies and graduated from high school. They were in seventh heaven. They were on cloud nine. Nine times out. of ten students who do well in school find good jobs. Some work in an office doing the same things every day at nine-to-five jobs. You do not have to dress to the nines, or wear your best clothes, for this kind of work. 28. If you solve a problem without any difficulty, you can also say that you can do it _______. A. in seventh heaven B. on cloud nine C. at sixes and sevens D. in two shakes of a lamb’s tail 29. When Tom wins first place in the game, we can congratulate him by using “________” according to the passage. A. dress up to the nines B. give three cheers C. kill two birds with one stone D. put two and two together 30. Which of the following has the similar meaning to “in all probability”? A. Two wrongs don’t make a right. B. Two’s company, three’s a crowd.
3

C. Nine times out of ten. 31. What is the best title of the passage? A. Interesting Number Expressions C. Number Stories

D, Two heads are better than one.

B. The Importance of Numbers D. Use Numbers D Reading is the key to success. Apparently every successful person develops a passion for reading. This is because reading is a key element to obtain the information required to understand something. For instance, lawyers have to study and learn every established law on their specific branches. Sometimes the law changes according to people’s needs. A good lawyer has to be informed about the latest news in the court. A doctor has to be informed of the latest advances in medicine. Reading is very important for all mankind. Everything is relative in this world, especially reading. Reading can open many doors and it can lead you into a path of success. Studies have confirmed that reading to your unborn child is very good. This way your child will develop a passion for reading. How do you develop a passion for reading? There is only one way you can boost your passion for reading. Let me explain this to you. If you want to learn how to ride a bike, you have to get on the bike as many times as possible until you have learned. It works the same way with reading. If you want to boost your reading, take a book and read it all the way through. When you finish reading your first book, take another book and do the same. Try to read as much as you can. If you are going out, grab a magazine, a book, an article or something to read. There is a very important factor behind the reading — reading comprehension. It’s what makes you understand the meaning behind the text. Let’s assume that you read a document and you are supposed to explain the meaning of the document. How would you explain the document if you couldn’t capture the message of the author? 32. The first two paragraphs mainly talk about _______. A. the key to success B. the importance of reading C. what reading comprehension is D. how to develop a passion for reading 33. We can define reading comprehension as ________. A. a strong passion for reading B. the latest information in reading C. a very important factor behind the reading D. something that makes people understand what they read 34. The author develops the passage mainly by ________. A. following the natural time order B. presenting opinions and giving examples C. comparing the opinions of different people D. presenting a cause and analyzing its effects 35. What do you suppose the following paragraph will talk about? A. Popular reading websites. B. Famous people who love reading. C. The importance of reading at school. D. Ways to improve reading comprehension.
