Every day, he would walk down to our house and bring my dad newspapers. Along with the papers he would bring a small bag of treats (美食) for my two brothers and me. Western NY had terrible winter weather: rain, sleet (雨夹雪), or even 3 feet of snow. Even when he was 81, he still walked the half mile every single day. As a child, I looked forward to the daily treats, but now I’m older and I realize he braved the rough weather each day just to see us smile; I now value that more than anything else. My grandfather touched(感动)many lives. A woman who had been in hospital for five years told me her story. She said my grandfather would visit her twice a week at her home: to read to her, play bridge, or just chat. It lasted for years without stop. She had few visitors. Even a hitchhiker who my grandfather had picked up for free told me of my grandfather’s influence on his life. My grandfather took the traveler to his home. After learning that the man was homeless, my grandfather gave him a place to stay. The man told me that no one had ever been so nice to him. He later found a job in a supermarket. I was touched, but not surprised to know all of the touching stories from which I understood my grandfather’s selflessness. I have since tried to learn from him to help others. Although he died years ago, we still respect(尊重) him. 46. The writer’s grandfather walked to his grandson’s home each day in order to ________. A. bring his son newspapers B. give his grandsons some food C. take exercise by walking D. see his son and grandchildren 47. All of the following can describe(描述) the writer’s grandfather EXCEPT ________. A. kind B. selfless C. strict D. helpful 48 . The underlined word “hitchhiker” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________. A. a person who gets a free car ride when traveling B. a person who likes traveling by car C. a person who is given up by parents D. a person who travels alone and gets lost 49. From the text we can infer(推断) that ________. A. the writer didn’t know his grandfather’s selflessness until years later B. the writer’s grandfather went to his house except on snowy days C. the writer’s grandfather ever looked after a woman in hospital for5 years D. the writer’s grandfather ever helped a stranger find a job in supermarket 50. After learning about his grandfather’s stories, the writer ________. A. felt a little surprised at first B. followed the example of his grandfather C. was much sad all the time D. didn’t like his grandfather’s action

B Scholars and researchers have tried to discover what personality characteristics go along with success in intercultural experiences. Their findings have often been unclear or incomplete. But three characteristics stand out in their reports: patience, a sense of humor, and the awareness of being unclear. Patience, of course, is the ability to keep calm even when things do not go as one wants them to, or hopes they will, or has even been sure they will. Impatience sometimes brings improvements in relations with other people, but usually it does not. A person with a sense of humor is less likely to take things too seriously and more ready to see the humor in his own reactions than a humorless person. The value of a sense of humor really needs to be paid more attention to. The awareness of being unclear is a more difficult concept than patience or a sense of humor. Foreigners often find themselves in situations that are unclear to the newcomers. That is, they do not know what is happening in the situation. Perhaps they do not understand the local language well enough, or they do not know how some system or organization works, or they can’t be sure of different people’s roles in what is going on. “It’s like I just got here from the moon,” a Chinese graduate student who newly arrived in the United States said, “things are just so different here.” 51. The passage mainly tells us . A. that it’s not easy to t ravel abroad B. that humor is very important in communication C. of some characteristics in dealing with foreigners D. of three main ways useful for communicating with foreigners 52. According to the writer, the Chinese students is . A. a hard-working student

can lose themselves in the next street? Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it. “Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Chief of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.” Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions: If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing. If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bile. When you return, go back along the same route. Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. Now you need never get lost again! 56.
