A People have a natural tendency to collect things. Dr Steve Anderson, a neurologist at the University of Iowa says our need to collect may date back to an earlier point in our evolution, since many animals hoard things, especially food. There are many different kinds of collections and collectors. Some collections are souvenirs of a place. I once visited the home of a couple who collect masks every time they travel. One wall of their dining room is covered with traditional painted masks from South Africa, Egypt, Vietnam, the Philippines and dozens of other places. When they are on a trip they never have to stop and think about what to buy as a souvenir. They just look for a mask to add to their collection. Some collections are gifts. I know a man who gives his mother a china plate every Mother's Day with a message or saying about mothers on it. He hunts through antique stores and curio shops, often for weeks, until he finds a plate and a design that he has not already purchased. Some collections are of practical use. I have friends who are world travelers and collect Starbucks Coffee mugs from every place they visit. There are Starbucks franchises in more than forty countries. Our friends don't have forty different mugs but certainly enough for a fairly large group of coffee drinking guests. The desire to learn new things can also be the impetus behind a collection. I know someone who collects military artifacts from the World Wars. He has uniforms, machinery, vehicles, sheet music, maps, books, flags and photographs. His collection has helped him learn a great deal about military history. Some people collect things because of their monetary value. I used to work with a woman who collected Barbie Dolls. She assured me someday she would sell her collection and make a mint of money. Collections can remind us of positive experiences and important people in our lives. They can help us learn new things. They can be practical or magical. If you're not a collector you might want to think about becoming one. Collections can enrich our lives. 31. What's the main idea of this passage? A. 3

C. drive

D. pleasure

B. They can make us become important people. D. They can enrich our lives. C. Neutral (中立的). D. Supportive.

35. What is the writer's attitude toward collecting things?

Nicolai Calabria has already become one of the best 106-pound wrestlers. He has successfully climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, and most importantly, he's changed the attitude of any normal person who watches him compete. The 17-year-old teenager has one leg. He was born that way, but his goal is to show it's not the one thing that defines him. He would also be the first one to tell you that he just wants to prove to others and himself that he's just like other normal ones. When Calabria was young, his parents tried different prostheses (假肢) to find out what was most comfortable for their son as he tried to keep up with a family, who has a preference for sports. At first, the Calabrias had their middle child in a prosthesis that looked and functioned like a "real" leg, but soon they decided to choose a different path when they found it wasn't beneficial to his movement. Then the family moved him to arm crutches (手杖) and from there a new burst of energy was found. Getting others to believe that he could take off on the soccer field took a little bit longer. When the Calabrias moved to Concord, they had a hard time convincing the town soccer program to allow a child like him to compete with able-bodied kids. After months and months of debates and meetings, the family received the answer they were looking for. Since then, witnessing a young man on crutches who compete against those with two legs has become a fixed event in the Concord community. "At that time I had nothing but frustration working with the soccer community and now I have nothing but admiration for the fact that he's been allowed to play, and people who see that he adds value to the game," his father said. "I just think it's a great result." 36. What is Nicolai Calabria's goal since he was born? A. To be an athlete who can do sports. C. To have a suitable prosthesis. A. He couldn't move flexibly. C. He couldn't keep balance at all. 38. What can we infer from Paragraph 5? A. Calabria was proved to be the most excellent player of the team. B. It was not easy for Calabria to be accepted to the town soccer team. C. Calabria's parents didn't allow him to play soccer at first. D. There were some other disabled children in the soccer team. 39. It is implied in the last paragraph that Nicolai's father ____________. A. has been frustrated since Nicolai played soccer B. thinks that Nicolai is playing a key role in the team
4

B. To prove that he is a normal teenager. D. To change people's attitude toward the disabled. B. It didn't look like a "real" leg. D. It was not easy to put on and off.

37. What trouble did Calabria meet when he wore his first prosthesis?

C. is very delighted that Nicolai can play soccer in the team D. hasn't expected that Nicolai can be allowed to play soccer 40. What does this passage mainly tell us? A. A boy with one leg can play soccer as a normal teenager. B. A boy with one leg is realizing as many dreams as he can. C. A boy with one leg can make a sport event more valuable. D. A boy with one leg can add value to society. C I've got a cellphone, email and voice-mail. But why am I so lonely? A funny thing happened on the way to communications revolution: we stopped talking to one another. Last Sunday afternoon, I was walking in the park with a friend, and his cellphone rang, interrupting our conversation. There they were, talking and talking and I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The park was filled with people talking on their cellphones. They were passing other people without looking at them, saying hello, noticing their babies or stopping to pet their puppies. Obviously, the electronic voice is preferable to human contact. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology limites the intimacy (亲密性) of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice-email, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mother has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every possible contact between human beings get automated, people feel more lonely. Pumping gas at the station? Why say good morning to the attendant when you can use your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact? Pretty soon you won't have the burden of making eye contact at the grocery store. Some supermarket chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those annoying clerks who look at you and ask how you are doing. As for me, I own a cellphone, a voice-email system, and an email account. Giving them up isn't an option ─ they are great for what they are intended to do. It is their unintended consequences that make me cringe(畏缩). 41. What is the passage mainly about? A. The communications revolution. B. Complaints about communications technology. C. The fast development of communications technology. D. Ways that people can live a happy life. 42. By saying " I became invisible" in Paragraph 2, the author probably means he ____________. A. felt somewhat left out C. took it seriously A. proves the importance of the Internet
5

B. became very angry D. had nothing to say B. has more bad effects than good ones

43. According to the author, advanced communications technology ____________.

C. does harm to people's relationship A. benefit little from advanced technology C. are becoming popular with their users

D. brings many troubles to the author's mother B. don't need any service staff D. are increasing people's loneliness

44. Like the gas station, some supermarket chains ____________.

45. Which of the following statements would the author probably agree with? A. The communications revolution brings people no fun. B. Few people benefit from the communications revolution. C. Everyone enjoys using modern communication tools. D. Modern communication tools are a double-edged sword. 第二节:下面文章中有 5 处(第 46-50 题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E 和 F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。 A. Recycle old things B. Let the girl do her part C. Ask the girl for her opinion D. Use fun and inexpensive art E. Pay special attention to painting F. Make the room appropriate for the girl's age Tips for decorating a teenager girl's room By the time a girl hits her teen years, she has some idea of what she'd like to feature in her room. A variety of decorating themes exist. As well as having the potential to be pretty and inviting, these decorating themes acknowledge your teen's growing independence and emerging identity. Designing a cool teen girl's room requires collaboration between the parents and the child to select items within the proper budget that reflect the girl's style and personal taste. Here are some suggestions that you may find useful. 46. _______________ When you start decorating a girl's room, you should involve her in the design choices. Teen-aged girls will probably have some design ideas before you start the project and even preschool girls will have opinions on the things that will make their bedrooms special. Consider the girl's interests before you start your design. Remember, this is her room and no matter how beautiful you think your design is, you need to respect her interests and taste. 47. _______________ Looking for some ideas to start decorating a girl's room? Once you've determined a direction, do some searches for bedding and related items. Young girls may like cartoon characters (such as the wildly popular Disney Princesses or Hello Kitty). Other themes that are popular with many young misses include fairies, butterflies, and animals. Older girls may want to avoid these themes, feeling they are too common. For older school aged females, focus on color and some popular elements such as flowers, a garden or castle environment.
6

48. _______________ One of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to change a decorating theme is to change the colors you use in a room. Paint is relatively inexpensive and even a beginner can do a nice job of painting the walls of a bedroom. Fresh paint can change the character of a space quickly. Use a light color to make a small space look larger and brighter. Whole ceilings also make a room seem bigger. You can also apply paint to other elements in the room. Wooden bookshelves, and toy chests can be quickly repainted to give a new look. 49. _______________ Unlike more formal living space in your home, when you are decorating a girl's room you can have a lot of fun with the art and accessories. Even better, you do not have to spend a lot of money. Most girls are perfectly content with framed posters of their favorite characters, animals ot themes. Posters are available at local art stores, frame shops and online for very reasonable prices. Art is everywhere. You can frame a beautiful piece of wrapping paper or greeting cards for instant artwork to hang on a girl's wall. 50. _______________ There are endless decorating options for girls of all ages. No matter what your daughter is into, you should be able to find a decoration theme that will make both of you happy. Just remember to involve her in the decorating process. She can paint the wall, make framed artwork, and help tidy up the place. If she has helped decorate the room, she will be happier and prouder when she lives in it afterwards. 第四部分:单词拼写(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分) 根据下列句子及所给中文意思或首字母提示,写出各单词的正确形式,每空限填一词。 51.
