A Three-quarters of a million tourists flock to the white beaches every year, but this bo

oming industry has come at a price. Poisonous smoke rising from open fires, rubbish made up of plastic bottles, packets… it’s far cry from the white sands, clear waters and palm trees that we associate with the Maldives(马尔代夫), the paradise island holiday destination set in the Indian Ocean. Of its 200 inhabited islands, which are spread across an area of 35,000 square miles, 99 are good resorts. So many tourists come every year, more than double the local population. Of these, over 100,000 travel from the UK. The capital, Malé, is four times more densely populated than London. Given these facts, it's hardly surprising that the Maldives has a waste disposal problem. Years ago, when the tourists left, the government had to deal with a stream of rubbish. Their answer was to turn one of this islands into a dumping ground. Four miles west of Malé is the country's dumping ground, Thilafushi. What you are seeing here is a view of the Maldives on which no honeymooners will ever clap eyes. Each visitor generates 3.5kg of waste per day. The country dumps more than 330 tons of rubbish on the island every day, Now, since many waste boats, fed up with waiting seven hours or more, directly offload their goods into the sea, the government of the Maldives has banned the dumping of waste on the island. So, the waste boats ship the rubbish to India instead. 21. What is the main cause of the waste disposal problem? A. The big local population B. Too many waste boats C. The large number of tourists D. Open fires on the islands 22. What can we learn from the text? A. It is much more crowded in Malé than in London. B. Another island will be used as a dumping ground. C. No honeymooners are willing to visit the Maldives. D. Waste on islands will be offloaded directly into the sea. 23.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To attract more tourists to the Maldives. B. To state the waste disposal problem in the Maldives. C. To call on us to protect the environment. D. To explain the causes of pollution in the Maldives. . B Europe is home to a variety of cultural treasures. Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide publisher, has offered pairs of cities for culture-hungry but time-poor travelers. London and Paris It takes you about two hours to travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, a high-speed railway

service. The two capital cities have been competing in fashion, art and nightlife for decades-but each secretly looks up to the other. No one can doubt the grand and impressive beauty of Paris' Louvre Museum, but if you want to save money, you cannot skip the British Museum free to visit. Compared with London, Paris has more outdoor attractions such as the beautiful green walkway La Promenade Plantee. In Paris, you'll see diners linger over red wine. While in London, you can try some afternoon tea, eat fish and chips or salted cake. Vienna and Bratislava Austrian capital Vienna and Slovakia city Bratislava are an hour apart by train. But since they are linked by the Danube River, the best way to travel is by ship. A tour of the two cities is the perfect way to experience everything from 17th century's Habsburg dynasty splendor to sci-fi restaurants. Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending of architecture and nature in the grand Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee, which has made its way to the world's cultural heritage list. Bratislava is best known for its fine dining----the remarkable UFO restaurant. You can enjoy a meat-laden diner her in an amazing setting. 24.What's the relationship between London and Paris according to the text? A. They help each other. B. They attack each other. C. They admire each other. D. They don't like each other. 25.What are the advantages of Paris mentioned in the article? a. The Louvre Museum b. Free access to museums c. More outdoor attractions d. Better wines and perfumes A. ac B. cd C. acd D. bcd 26.Which of the cities should you choose if you are interested in sci-fi restaurants? A. London. B. Paris. C. Glasgow. D. Bratislava. 27.Lonely Planet recommends these two pairs of cities because________. A. they are not expensive to visit B .they are best known to the world C. they are always enemies between each other D. they are close but different in many aspects C Just over a quarter of American adults now read news on their cell phones, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center. The survey results being released by the group Monday offer another sign of how people are changing the way they get information. Technology has been reshaping the news business and the way consumers relate to it for more than a decade. The latest shift is being driven by the exploding popularity of phones that can easily access the Internet. The new study found that 26 percent of Americans get news on their phones. Pew doesn’t have comparable data for say, two or three years ago. But evidence of the shift in habits can be seen in this finding: About 43 percent of those under 50 said they are mobile news consumers, compared with 15 percent of older respondents. Still, some things don’t change. Readers’ No. 1 concern when they look for news on their phones: the weather. Of the 37 percent of cell phone owners who said they use the Internet on

their phone, 72 percent said they check weather reports. Current events came in second with 68 percent. Pew’s survey offered a wide range of statistics on people’s news habits. It showed people are not relying on one medium. Just shy of 60 percent of respondents get news from both online and offline sources. And 46 percent said they use four to six different types of media on a typical day. The Web is also helping to turn the news into more of a social experience: More than 80 percent of respondents get or receive news via e-mailed links. The results were based on telephone interviews with 2,259 people over the age of 18, conducted between Dec. 28 and Jan. 19. For questions to that entire group, the margin of error was 2.3 percentage points. On questions to just Internet users, the margin was 2.7 percentage points. 28. Why can more American adults read news on their cell phones? A. Because they want to become cool. B. Because they want to look fashionable. C. Because they have phones accessing the Internet. D. Because reading news on cell phone is free. 29. What conclusion can we draw from the second paragraph? A. Older cell phone owners are more likely to look for news on their phones. B. Younger cell phone owners are more likely to look for news on their phones. C. Older cell phone owners never look for news on their phones. D. All the younger cell phone owners look for news on their phones. 30. What’s the most popular approach for people to receive news? A. By only one medium. B. By reading newspapers. C. By emailed links. D. By cell phone’s access. 31. How long did the telephone interviews last? A. Nearly twenty hours. B. More than a month. C. About three weeks. D. Less than two weeks. D When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret—Ma Ke. Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke's designs for more than a decade, a fact that was only highlighted recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US’ first lady Michelle Obama and France’s Carl a Bruni-Sarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady’s wardrobe. Even so, Ma prefers a low-key approach. “If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?” she says of all the media attention. Ma’s relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an

introduction because she was a fan of Ma’s designs and had been wearing them for years. The two naturally became friends. Ma says: “The painting reflects the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don’t share my philosophy won’t buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I’m doing now.” However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands. “Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,” says a western designer. The first lady’s double-breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren’t available at any of Exception’s shops, though Exception’s physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors. 32. The passage mainly discusses _________. A. the designer of the first lady Peng Liyuan’s dress, Ma Ke B. the friendship between Peng Liyuan and her designer C. Peng Liyuan’s clothes on her first state visit D. the reactions to Peng Liyuan’s first visit to Moscow 33. In the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 Ma Ke mentioned “an egg and the hen” to show _________. A. it is hard to explain “Which came first, the egg or the hen?” B. it was unnecessary to pay such great attention to her C. the outcome was more important than the process D. her dissatisfaction with the media attention on her dress 34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. First ladies compete with each other whenever they are together. B. Peng’s suits can be bought in Ma Ke’s clothes stores. C. Ma Ke offered to design the first lady’s clothes through her friends. D. Peng had liked Ma’s designs long before she got to know her in the flesh. 35. In the passage, Peng Liyuan _________. A. often reflects on what she has in her heart before choosing clothes B. is sympathetic and has a strong environmental consciousness C. always desires the exceptional charm of the brand D. is knowledgeable in philosophy 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填 入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 Faces, like fingerprints, are unique.Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? 36 .Yet a very young child or even an animal, such as a pigeon, can learn to .When we talk about someone’s personality,we mean the ways in which he or recognize faces.
