A Ks5u It’s a safe bet that a robot made your car and made your computer. Pretty soon, they could be making your bed and breakfast too. Increasingly, engineers are saying that robots are going to move out of research departments and into your home. Companies including General Electric are working on designs for small robots. Products like the Roomba, a robot that can clean floors, are flying off the shelves. What’s behind this new robot revolution? It’s partly a matter of technology. Devices that can recognize and respond to a human voice have been developed. There are now a few different ways for robots to move around. They can walk, crawl or ride on wheels. Robots are being made smaller and smaller. They are also becoming more and more able. A bigger part of the story is on the demand side. From the day the television remote control was invented, people around the world have searched for new ways to be lazy. Take into consideration that more and more people can afford robots, and the time seems ripe to introduce robots to the ordinary family. To be sure, robots that walk on two legs and talk like people are still a long way off. However, robots that do basic housework such as cleaning or gardening are sure to come out soon. One thing is certain---when these robots do come into our homes, it will change things forever. 56. The underlined part “flying off the shelves” in the second paragraph means________. A. Selling well. B. Cleaning the shelves smartly. C. Flying freely D. Dropping onto the floor
57.Which plays a more important role in revolutionizing the robot? A. Science and technology. B. Rapid development of companies. C. Effective marketing means. D. Great demand from the buyers. 58. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Robots have already come into ordinary homes. B. Technology is the only basis of the development of robots. C. General Electric is not interested in designing small robots. D. Robots that can walk on two legs and talk like people are still far from us. B Dozens of dolphins swam out of the polluted waters of Haifa Harbor on Tuesday. This was the first time that dolphins had visited this crowded Mediterranean port， and researchers were surprised and delighted by the unexpected event. Between 40 and 50 of the dolphins appeared in the busy port on Tuesday morning， obviously drawn by the fish?rich waters of Haifa Harbor. However，the bay is also full of harmful chemicals. Aviad Sheinin，professor of Haifa University’s Maritime Studies Department，said he didn’t think the dolphins were harmed by the pollution，but he hoped that they would swim back to the sea soon. “It seems that they are quite relaxed. They don’t seem to be stressed,” he said. Haifa Harbor is lined by chemical companies that have been pouring poisonous waste into the water for decades. pollution levels have dropped in recent years，the water is still considered a health problem． “There are lots of fish in Haifa Harbor. Unfortunately we couldn’t tell the dolphins that the fish are not healthy；and I don’t know what the result will be,” he told Israel Army Radio. ks5u Hundreds of Haifa residents gathered around Haifa Harbor to see the interesting sight，and researchers said this provided a rare chance to film and study the rough?toothed dolphins. In addition to the dozens of dolphins which swam into the port on Tuesday， 59.Aviad Sheinin’s words suggest that ________. A. he is curious about the dolphins B. the dolphins might affect the existence of fishes in Haifa port C. he will do research on the dolphins D. he is uncertain about what will happen to the dolphins 60.. When learning the dolphins entered Haifa port，hundreds of Haifa residents ________. A. were curious B. felt upset C. went to drive them away D. were shocked 61. This passage mainly tells us that ________. A. dolphins are well protected in Israel B. Haifa Harbor is full of harmful chemicals C. dolphins made a surprise visit to the polluted harbor D. people love dolphins
C I couldn’t stand the fifth grade. I didn’t like the milk that was warm by lunchtime from sitting near the stove all morning. I didn’t like the break time because I could never get a turn on the swing. But most of all I didn’t like my teacher, Mrs. Kelly, because I was sure Mrs. Kelly didn’t like me. Mrs. Kelly never let me pass out books or collect papers. Mrs.Kelly made me sit in the last seat of the sixth row behind David Abbot, the biggest kid in the whole class. David was bigger than most of the eighth-graders, and he never, never took a bath. The only thing I could see all day was the back of David’s head. At the beginning of fifth grade, Mrs.Kelly had explained all the classroom rules including the one about being excused for the restroom. She told all the students that they had to raise their hand with one or two fingers when they wanted to be excused. Then she would know what they were going to do in the restroom. The whole class would laugh whenever anyone held up two fingers to be excused. One Monday in October, Mrs.Kelly said,“Clear your desk and take your composition books. Today I want you to write a composition called Something interesting about something you have personally seen. Do not repeat any topics.” “Can we write about Disneyland?” Maureen Murphy asked. Everyone in the class knew that Maureen had been to Disneyland more than anyone else in the whole school. “That would be perfect, Maureen, ”Mrs. Kelly answered with a smile. I opened my composition book. I tried to ignore the huge red U for “unsatisfactory” that partly covered the title, My Summer Vacation. I remembered Mrs. Kelly’ s comments without even looking at them. “It has been brought to my attention that this composition is about your last year’s summer vacation, and you have already written the same trip for a composition last year during the fourth grade. Therefore, this assignment is unsatisfactory. Your handwriting is also unsatisfactory.” I didn’t care about the handwriting comment. That was on every assignment I turned in. What bothered me was that Mrs. Kelly would not accept my composition about my train trip to Denver. The only trip I had ever gone in my whole life had been the trip to Denver. In the fourth grade, my composition had been about all the things I had seen from the train windows on the way to Denver. For the fifth grade, I wrote a whole new composition about the hotel in Denver with the glass elevator. Mrs. Kelly wrote an outline on the blackboard. One paragraph for an introduction, then three paragraphs to describe the topic in detail, and a final paragraph for a conclusion. Ks5u I really liked to fill the pages of my composition book with words and ideas. I thought and stared at the back of David’s head. That’s when I noticed that the back of David’s head looked like a brown forest with a long, brown, hairy trail that ran down his neck. The top of his head looked like a cartoon with brown hairs up all over David’s ears. Looking at the back of David’s head, I decided this composition could be different. It could be full of imagination instead of boring and embarrassing because I had never had the chance to see anything interesting, outside of the trip to Denver.
I opened my composition book and began to write. I wrote and wrote until Mrs. Kelly said,“ Mary Ellyn, this is the third time I’ve called your name. It is time to line up to go home. However, you will stay after and write ‘I will pay attention in class’ one hundred times before you are excused.” On Wednesday, Maureen tiptoed around the room in her fancy shoes passing back everyone’s composition notebooks. I ignored her naughty smile and opened my book past all the F’s and U’s. I couldn’t wait to see a beautiful letter at the top of my composition, entitled The Back of David’s Head. By the time I found the page, my whole body was so tense with excitement I almost fell off my seat. But what I saw made my breath stop in a gasp. Across the whole composition, Mrs. Kelly had scrawled a huge U. It was the biggest and reddest U I had ever seen. A huge tear fell onto the page, I had the book shut and raised my hand with two fingers. I didn’t care who laughed. In the bathroom, I sat on the edge of a toilet and cried for a long time. After a while I heard the restroom door open. “I know you’re in here, Mary Ellyn,” Maureen Murphy’s voice could be heard under the green painted metal door.“ Mrs. Kelly says you’d better get back in class, right now.” I waited for the sound of the door closed.“ You just wait and see, Mrs. Kelly,” I said in a low voice. “Someday I’ll show you. Someday I’ll write lots of stories and sell them for lots of money. Someday my stories will be in books, Just you wait and see.” And when I grew up, that’s exactly what I did. ks5u So there, Mrs. Kelly, I’m truly grateful to you. 62.The author didn’t like the fifth grade for all the reasons EXCEPT ________. A. the milk B. the rest time C. the teacher D. the writing 63. What can we infer from the passage? A. Mrs. Kelly sometimes let the author hand out books. B. Mrs. Kelly demands that students should not go to the restroom in class. C. While writing, Mrs. Kelly didn’t allow students to write the same topic they had written. D. Maureen often went to Disneyland. 64.The author wrote about last year’s summer vacation because________. A. she had no interesting thing to write but the only trip to Denver B. the trip made a deep impression on her C. she was interested in the trip very much D. she liked the hotel in Denver very much 65. Why did the author thank Mrs. Kelly? A. Because Mrs. Kelly often encouraged her at high school. B. It was Mrs. Kelly’s criticism that inspired the author to become a writer. C.
