Wesla Whitfield, a famous jazz singer, has a unique style and life story, so I decided to see
one of her performances and interview her for my newspaper. I went to a nightclub in New York and watched the stage lights go up. After the band played an introduction, Wesla Whitfield wheeled herself onstage in a wheelchair. As she sang, Whitfield's voice was so powerful and soulful that everyone in the room forgot the wheelchair was even there. At 57, Whitfield is small and pretty, humorous and modest. Raised in California, Whitfield began performing in public at age 18, when she took a job as a singing waitress at a pizza shop. After studying classical music in college, she moved to San Francisco and went on to sing with the San Francisco Opera Chorus. Walking home from rehearsal (排练) at age 29, she was caught in a random shooting that left her unable to move her body from the waist down. I asked how she dealt with the realization that she'd never walk again, and she admitted that at the beginning she didn't want to face it. After a year of depression she tried to kill herself. She was then admitted to a hospital for treatment, where she was able to recover. Whitfield said she came to understand that the only thing she had lost in this misfortunate event was the ability to walk. She still possessed her most valuable asset—her mind. Pointing to her head, she said, “Everything important is in here. The only real disability in life is losing your mind. ”When I asked if she was angry about what she had lost, she admitted to being annoyed from time to time, “Especially when everybody's dancing, because I love to dance.” But when_that_happens I just remove myself so I can focus instead on what I can do. 51．In which of the following places did Wesla Whitfield once work? A．A college. C．A pizza shop. B．A hospital. D．A news agency.
52．Which of the following statements is TRUE about Wesla Whitfield's physical disability? A．It was caused by a traffic accident. B．It made her sad and depressed at first. C．It seriously affected her singing career. D．It happened when she was a college student. 53．What do the underlined words “when that happens” mean in the last paragraph? A．When Wesla is losing her mind. B．When Wesla is singing on the stage. C．When Wesla goes out in her wheelchair. D．When Wesla sees other people dancing. 54．What advice would Wesla most likely give other disabled people? A．Ignore what you have lost and make the best use of what you have. B．Be modest and hardworking to earn respect from other people.
C．Acquire a skill so that you can still be successful and famous. D．Try to sing whenever you feel upset and depressed.

We all，at one time or another，have pretended to be a rock star，singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults，in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio，find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythm. Most of the time，I do this on my way to work. Yes，that is true，I will be in my nice work clothes，jamming while driving or stopped at a traffic light I get weird(古怪的)looks from some people and others laugh. Personally， love to get I lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly! The definition for the word silly，according to the dictionary is: stupid，foolish and nonsensical.I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they walk around all serious，which in all honesty，is foolish! No one is perfect，I repeat: no one is perfect.I don't care how educated，how thin，how beautiful，how simple，how frugal (节俭的)，how rich，and so on...No one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not? Life is so short...You never know when this beautiful journey will be over，so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity(呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza，that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life： “Dance as though no one is watching you， Love as though you have never been hurt before， Sing as though no one can hear you， Live as though heaven is on earth.” When we were kids，we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in the world. So we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However，as we grew up，we lost that childlike innocence. So don't lose the child that still lives within you.The next time you feel down， turn on your go favorite song，and sing and dance along like there is no tomorrow.Or watch something that makes you laugh.Laughter is the best medicine to whatever ails (使痛苦) you and nothing is better than laughing so hard that your stomach hurts.Trust me，you will feel a whole lot better，and who doesn't want to feel good? 59．According to the text，what does the writer usually do?
A．He repeats the words of songs. B．He sings songs on his way to work. C．He dances in his own home. D．He shares music with other drivers. 60．What does the writer think of the people who look very serious? A．They are honest. C．They are perfect. B．They are educated. D．They are silly.
61．The writer quotes Souza to show that ______. A．life is a beautiful journey B．life is full of rigidity C．life is to be treasured D．life is a great recipe 62．Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A．The Innocence of Being a Child B．The Importance of Being Silly C．No One Is Perfect D．Life Is Short
Can you imagine living in a house built by recycled waste? Texas home builder Dan Phillips transforms trash into artful treasures, creating beautiful floors with wood pieces, kitchen counters from ivorycolored bones and roofs out of license plates (牌照)． The fantastic houses which spring from his imagination are made almost entirely of materials which would otherwise have ended up in a garbage area. “People have been doing this for hundreds of thousands of years; using whatever is
available to build shelter, ” Phillips said.If you think about carefully what could be used, then building materials are everywhere. The thirteen homes he has built so far would fit better in an art museum than the residential streets of Huntsville, a conservative town of about 35,000 people. Living in these houses is a bit like living in a roadside attraction.“Almost every day, somebody knocks on the door and says ?Is there any way that we could see？?”said Edie Wells, an artist who rents a room in the Bone House. Her home features a stairway made of bones, floors covered in wine corks (软木塞) and beer bottle caps.Wells said visitors are most impressed when they see a bathroom with its walls, floor and ceiling entirely covered with broken mirror pieces. In addition, each house is highly energy efficient with plenty insulation (隔热材料), an
ondemand solar hot water heater and a system that can collect and recycle rainwater to clean the toilet and wash clothes. Phillips founded Phoenix Commotion 12 years ago with the aim of creating a new model for sustainable housing. For as little as $ 10,000 it builds affordable homes for single parents, lowincome families and artists. The company has used hundreds of tons of construction waste by recycling the materials into habitable buildings. Phillips tries to spread his recycledhouse idea by speaking at events across the United States, and by using the Internet to reach out to likeminded individuals.Phillips said, “I'm not going to be saving the world anytime soon. But there needs to be at least some visibility for this model in this century.” 63．Which of the following is NOT the advantage of the homes built by Phillips? A．Environmentallyfriendly. C．Convenient. 64．What do we know about Dan Phillips? A．He is serious and hardworking. B．He is full of imagination and intelligence. C．It didn't take him long to build the houses. D．He didn't give speeches in the United States. 65．According to the passage, the houses are like artful treasures because they are ________. A．made of bones B．museumsC．admired by people D．made of various trash B．Energy efficient. D．Cheap.
66．Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A．Home Builder Dan Phillips B．Green Homes C．Home Builder Dan Phillips Turned Trash into Green Homes D．A Home Builder's Life
Many cities in the world are benefiting from the night activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla (游击队) gardeners. Armed with trowels, spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed overnight with brightlycolored bedding plants. In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the effort of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their
neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion. Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify neglected places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn't look depressing in the winter months. The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job is at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in a tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block. He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the campaign. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to restore neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefullyorganized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would- urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition. be 67. These guerrilla gardeners do their work ________. A．at the request of the government B．nearby their houses C．often in return for others' help D．out of their own free will 68. Richard Reynolds decided to fill the pots with plants in order to ________. The guerrilla gardeners often return to their night working places with the purpose of ________. A．looking after these plants B．enjoying these beautiful flowers C．helping plants live through winter months D．changing the varieties of the plants 70. It can be inferred from the text that these guerrilla gardeners ________. A．are mainly from the United Kingdom B．will later get well paid

One possible version： As the proverb goes/says, “Good habits benefit you all your life.” Indeed, a good habit is to me what water is to fish.
Entering the high school, I took delight in having fast food and ate too much. Consequently, I was so heavily overweight that I suffered a lot from my awkward appearance. What made matters worse was the fact that my classmates played jokes on me at times. From then on, I made up my mind to avoid snacks and meanwhile to take up jogging to lose weight. Owing to the timely changes, it was not long before I did succeed in creating my new image. Only then did I start to appreciate the significance of forming a good habit. To be honest, the change in my habit means a lot to me, which contributes to my success as well as helps me regain confidence.
