Ⅰ、Analysis of the Teaching Material This is a play which is adapted from Mark Twain’s short story by the same title.And this r

eading passage is the third scene in Act one. It mainly introduces the beginning of the story.Two rich brothers,Roderick and Oliver, have made a secret bet whether a man can survive in London for a month with only a million pound bank note. Henry was chosen for their bet. Through the conversation among them,we can know why Henry was chosen. It is his being a stranger, penniless, especially his characters that made him get the luck. We should know luck is not always coming by accident. Ⅱ、Analysis of the Students High School students in Grade 1 have already mastered a certain number of English vocabulary and reading skills. They are able to express personal opinions clearly and accurately in English. Meanwhile, Grade 1 students have the ability to study both independently and cooperatively. They have their own values, criteria for judgment, and will choose the relevant reading strategies respectively according to their own needs. Moreover, they can also be inspired to think and output creatively. Ⅲ 、 Teaching Objectives 1. Knowledge Objectives Can master the meaning and usages of the new words and expressions: unbelievable,penniless, wealthy, wander, spot, seek, ,passage, by accident, make a bet on, account for. etc. Can be clear about the use of some sentence patterns such as emphatic sentence,polite requests. 2. Ability Objectives Can sum up the main idea of the whole passage Can read critically and find out detailed information through fast reading and careful reading Can use the key words, phrases and sentence patterns to express themselves Can Can develop the ability of working in a group 3. Affection Objectives Can think some luck or money critically Ⅳ、 Teaching Important and Difficult Points How to help the students master the meaning and usages of the new words and expressions: unbelievable,penniless,wealthy,wander,spot, seek, ,passage,by accident, make a bet on, account for. etc. How to help the students figure out the main idea and the line of the whole passage. How to help the students read critically How to help the students figure out the reasons why Henry was chosen How to help the students make up an interview with the Henry by using the words and expressions

leaned in this text Ⅴ、Teaching Methods Step 1: Warming-up and Lead-in 1. The teacher shows a video of a group of poor women wanting money eagerly to the Ss. The teacher asks the students some questions to lead in the topic. Q1: who did you see?What do they want? 2. The teacher shows a picture to the students Q1: If you got the money by accident, how will you feel? A: It is so unbelievable! Q2: With so much money,what do you want to do? A: What I want to do is.... 3. As for me,on the contrary, I want to be a businessman and earn more money to help others..So may be it’s money that permits us to do a lot of things.Have you ever seen such a large sum of money? How much is it? Today we’ll learn s story about this note. Step 2: Read for the main idea 1. The teacher asks the students to read the text as fast as possible and try to find out information according to the four elements .Then ask them to summarize the main idea. When.....Where...Who....What.... The main idea:In the summer of 1903 in London, two brothers made a bet on Henry Adams. Q1: What is the bet? Q2:Why do they chose Henry for the bet? Step 3: Read for details (Reasons for the bet) Part1. Line17-42 Questions from the two brothers The teacher asks the students to find the questions from the two brothers and think about what they are concerned about.according to the questions. Q1-2: Stranger? Q6: Penniless? Q1-6: Henry’s story? Part2. Henry’s Story The teacher asks the students to read the answers from Henry and try to find out what happened to him according to the time line. From this text, we know it seems an unbelievable thing for Henry to get the letter with money. At that time, a local journalist got the news by accident and wanted to have an interview with Henry. Suppose you were the journalist , please make an interview with Henry. The interview is to cover: 1. His situation in the past month 2. The unbelievable thing he met 3. His feelings for the luck 4.
