Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth. There are hundreds of kinds of sharks. Most are about two meters long. The dogfish shark, however, is less than twenty centimeters in length. A shark has an extremely good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of matters in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals. These powerful senses help sharks find their food. Sharks eat fish, other sharks, and plants that live in the ocean. Sharks grow slowly. About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs. The others give birth to live young. Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies as humans do. Some sharks are not able to reproduce until they are twenty years old. Most reproduce only every two years. And they give birth to fewer than ten young sharks. For this reason, over – fishing of sharks is of special danger to the future of the animal. Sharks are important for the world’s oceans. They eat injured and diseased fish. Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great. This protects the plants and other forms of life that exist in the oceans. People hunt sharks for sport, food, medicine and their skin. Experts say the international market for some kinds of sharks has increased because many parts of a shark are valuable. Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark. Shark liver oil is a popular source of Vitamin A. The skin of a shark can be used like leather. In Asia, people enjoy a kind of soup made from shark fins. Experts say a fisherman can earn a lot of money for even one kilogram of shark fins. Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth, but some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth. If too many sharks in one area are killed, that group of sharks may never return to normal population levels. 56. Which of the following words best describes the situation sharks are in? A. Good. B. Endangered. C. Powerful. D. Expensive. 57. The population of sharks is becoming smaller and smaller as a result of . A. hunting B. lack of food C. diseases D. their poor ability 58. Sharks eat other fish, . A. which is a threat to other forms of life in the oceans B. which is a protection for other forms of life in the oceans C. which helps prevent diseases from spreading D. which helps the number of other fish to grow 59. According to the passage, many parts of a shark are valuable EXCEPT ________. A. its jaws B. its liver C. shark fins D. shark teeth 60. The author thinks that . A. sharks are valuable to us and we can make full use of them B. oceans will become safer with fewer sharks swimming around C. measures should be taken to protect sharks D. the shark population is increasing slowly B
What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald. Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and motions similar to our own. 61. The passage mainly tells us that __________. A. Man’s life will be different in the future B. Future man will look quite different from us C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes D. Man’s organs’ functions will change 62. What serves as the evidence that man is changing? A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had. B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner. C. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker. D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years. 63. The change in man’s size of the forehead is probably because __________. A. he makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries C. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on D. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time 64. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future? A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful. B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses. C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.
D. He thinks and feels in a different way. 65. It is implied that __________. A. human beings will become less attractive in the future B. body organs will become poorer if they are not used often C. human beings hope for a change in the future life D. future life is always predictable C Picking tomatoes For as long as I can remember, Grandma’s plentiful tomato garden has been a sign of summer’s end. Each September. Just as the decreased heat of the sun suggests cooler days, Grandma requests my help in her tomato garden. She convinces me that she cannot pick tomatoes without my youthful eyes and quick mind. She says she needs me to examine each tomato and agree on its readiness for picking. While Grandma’ s request for my help in the tomato garden is always the same, her desire for my help seems to increase each year. Grandma has eyes for finding even the tomatoes hidden by undergrowth and other tomatoes. I, however, just turn circles looking for the ones I think Grandma will like. I spot what looks like a ripe tomato, head in its direction, and then get attracted by another one that appears to be equally ripe. I usually end up watching Grandma and trying to stay out of her way, which seems the only way my eyes and mind are useful. There we are, lost in the tomato vines(藤). Grandma’s eyes always know and they are not different in vegetable garden. From far away she spots what looks like a ripe tomato. As she walks toward the garden, she evaluates the tomato for a second time, but from a different angle. I already know it will end up in the basket with the pile of others Grandma has carefully chosen. However, Grandma acts as if she needs a final look to be sure. She calls me to her side, kneels beside the vine while enjoying the warmth of the fading sunlight on her face, and grasps the tomato in her hand. She turns each round, red ball toward the sunlight before picking it from the vine with a half-hearted smile. She then looks at me. I nod my head and smile. Grandma supposes I smile in agreement with her tomato selection. I know I smile, instead, at her, 66. Why does Grandma ask the author to go to the tomato garden with her? A. He can help pick more tomatoes. B. He can learn the hardship of labor. C. She enjoys staying with him while working. D. She tries to share the happiness of harvest with him. 67. What does the underlined word in the first paragraph mean? A. understand B. persuade C. believe D. consider 68. The second paragraph shows that the author_________, A. is not a good tomato picker. B. really has youthful eyes and quick mind. C. has spent a lot of time gardening with Grandma. D. is a naughty child trying to be out of Grandma’s sight.
69. In the last paragraph, the author smiles at Grandma because he . A. understands her well B. feels very happy to pick potatoes for her C. confirms that her tomato selection is great D. appreciates her skill in finding ripe tomatoes 70. What can we infer from the story? A. The grandchild will become more skillful at gardening than Grandma. B. Grandma will develop more patience in working with the grandchild. C. The grandchild will gradually become more independent of Grandma. D. Grandma’s need for the grandchild’s company (陪伴) will grow over time. 第二节 信息匹配（共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分） 阅读下列应用文及相关信息， 并按照要求匹配信息。 请在答题卡上将对应题号的相应选项字 母涂黑。 A．DETECTIVES ABROAD Read about the lives of real detectives.
