Unit 3 Travel Journal
Ⅰ Analysis of the teaching contents:
The World Tourist Organeration predits that a quarter of a century from now the number of Chinese tourists going abroad will be 20 times what it is today. This class will help students plan a trip and make a introduction of the Mekong River. Warming-up: Let students know that travel is very common in modern society. Ask them to discuss the fares to get to one place for different kinds of transport. Pre-reading: The word has many great rivers. One of them is the Mekong River. Reading: Introduce a travel journal---Journey down the Mekong to students. Comprehending:Consists of ten bianks , one form and one oral practice for the students to do so as to help them to get a better understanding of the text, that is to say, to help the teacher to check how much the students have understood the text.

Ⅱ Analysis of the students:
All young people dream of traving the world. The student we are nowing teaching will soon be the most travelled gengration in China’s long history. The lagest percentage of these tourists will visit Southeat Asia.Before the class the students should preview the new words.

Ⅲ Teaching goal:

New phrases: ever since, be fond of, care about, change one’s mind, make up one’s mind, give in, Function To learn about some journey plans. Grammar The Present Continuous Tense to express future actions. Were are you leaving? I’m going to the school. How are you going to do? I’m going to do my work. Sentence The Present Progressive Tense expresses futurity. structure We rae going to swimming tomorrow. Listing Students are able to make notes while listening. Reading Speaking Students are able to skim and scan the text Students are able to describe a trip .

Learning strategies Emotion and To stimulate the students to love adven-ture, nature, protect nature and attitude use nature and improve the ability of understanding, enjoying and creating beauty. Culture To make a sence of the different geography and customs all around the awareness world.

Writing Students are able to describe the Mekong River. To develop the students’sense of coopera-tive learning.

Ⅳ Teaching important and difficult points:
To enable the students to master the useful new words and expressions in this period. To enable the students to learn about how to describe a trip, make travel plans and to develop their reading ability.

Ⅴ Teaching aids:
A computer and a projector.

Ⅵ Teaching conception:
Show the students some pictures about the trantsport and allow students to examine their attitudes to various forms of travel. By asking them to evaluate the adantages and disadvantanges for each kinds of travel. ↓ Encourge the students to name some famous rivers and let them discuss which one of these rivers they might like to travel along and why. ↓ Lead in the text with a large map of the Mekong River and let them guess the name of the river ↓ Let the students skim the text so as to get the key words and general idea of each paragraph.. ↓ Let the students listen the text carefully and do the true or false questions. ↓ Deal with language problems to help the students to have a better understanding of the text. ↓ Let the students read the text again and answer the comprending questions. ↓ Work in pairs. Imagine that a student is a guide and the others are the travellers. Let the guide introduce the Mekong River to the others. ↓ Give the student some homework to help them understand the text better.

Ⅶ Teaching procedures:
Step1 Warming-up(5 minutes) (1)Present some pictures of beautiful places( The Great Wall; Yuanming Yuan ; Budala Palace; Venice; The Liberty Statue in New York,America; Fujiyama) to arouse the students’s interest of travelling. Ask the students which kind of transport they perfer: whether by bus, train, ship or air. T: Do you like travelling? Ss: Yes .... T: Which kind of transport you perfer? Ss:Bus/Train/Ship.... (2)By asking them to evaluate the adantages and disadvantanges for each kinds of travel, they are better to make sensible choices for themselves when they begin to travel on their own. T:Why do you like travelling by bus? Ss:Because it’s very cheap.... T:Why do you think airplane is better than bus? Ss:Because it’s quickly.... Step2 Lead In(5 minutes) (1) Present some pictures of beautifu rivers (Seine, Nile, Thames, Congo) and briefly decribe them.Then let the students discuss which one they might like to travel along and why. T: Do you like these beautiful rivers? Ss: Yes ... T:If you have a chance to travel, which river you are going to travel? Ss: I’m going to Thames. T:Why? Ss:Because it’s the most important river in London. .... (Ss may have a lot of different ideas. Give them time to talk freely) T:That’s good. .... (2) Present them a big map of Mekong and let them guess its name.

Ss: Mekong River. T:Good. let’s learn something about it. Step3 Pre-reading(2 minutes) Make a brief introduction of Mekong River. The Mekong River (known in Tibet as Dza-chu,China as Lancang Jiang and Thailand as Mae Nam Khong), is a major river in southeastern Asia. It is thelongest river in the region. From its source in China’s Qinghai Province near the border with Tibet, the Mekong flows generally southeast to the South China Sea, a distance of 4,200 km. Step4 Reading(18 minutes) (1) Let the students skim the text quickly to get the general idea of each paragraph and mach them. Paragraph1 ①Tell us something about their great dreams and how they started “the journey down the Mekong”to make their dream come true. Paragraph2 ②Introduce to us some basic knowl-edge about the Mekong River froma large atlas. Paragraph3 ③Show us how stubborn his sister is by insisting on her idea about their plan. Keys: ③ ① ② (2) Let the students listen to the text and do the true or false questions. Let them pay attention to the pronunciation of each word and the pauses within each sentence. ①Both Dao Wei and Yu Hang are Dai and they grow up in eastern Yunnan Province. ②Finally Wang Kun agreed with his sister to cycle with her. ③The Mekong River begins at a glacier on a Tibetan mountain, and the water there is clear but not cold. ④They found an atlas and a few books about the Mekong River in the library. ⑤The Mekong River does not flow through Thailand. Keys: F T F F F (3) Deal with language problems to help the students to have a better understanding of the text. Paragraph3 should be analysed carefully. ①. It was my sister who/that first had the idea to cycle along the entire Mekong River. 首先想到沿湄公河骑车旅游的是我姐姐。 [Explane] 强调句型 It is/was + 被强调部分 + that/who + 其余部分。被强调部 分可以是原句主语、宾语、状语、从句。 It is the ability to do the job that matters, not where you come from or what you are. 关键是你的工作能力而不是你从哪来或你是谁。(强调主语) It was Michael that/who I gave this ticket to. 我把这张票给了麦克。(强调宾语) It was about 600 years ago that the first clock with a face and an hour hand was made. 大约 600 年前,第一个有钟面和时针的钟诞生了。(强调时间状语) It was because he is in critical condition that the doctor decided to operate on him. 医生之所以决定为他动手术,是因为他病情危险。(强调从句)

[Explane]insist + that-clause insist 意为“坚持要求(做某事)”时,宾语从句用虚拟语气,谓语用 should do 的 形式, should 可省略;而 insist 意为“坚持认为,坚持某种观点”时,宾语从句 的动词时态根据具体的语境变化,不用虚拟语气。 He insisted that he hadn’t made a mistake. 他坚持认为自己没有犯错。 The bodyguards insisted that the president (should) keep away from the crowd for the sake of safety. 出于安全考虑,护卫人员坚决要求总统远离人群。 suggest (建议),demand (要求),require (要求),request (请求),order (命令)等动 词的宾语从句也常用 “(should) do” 表示虚拟语气。 [Practice] 中译英 1). 我坚决要求你立刻采取行动把事情处理好。 _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________ 2). 他反应冷淡表明他并不喜欢这个主意。 _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________ Keys: 1). I insist on your taking/insist that you take immediate action to put this right. 2). His cool response suggested that he didn't like the idea. Step 5 Post-reading(5 minutes) Let the students read the text again and compelet the questions. (1)Fill in the blanks. Mekong River begins ___ a glacier on a Tibetan mountain. At first ,The river is small and the water begins to move_______. It becomes ______as it passes ______ deep valleys. Traveling ______western Yunnan Province. Sometimes The River ______ wide Valley and becomes a_________. We were both surprised to learn that half of the river is in China . After it leaves china and the high altitudes, the Mekong becomes _____ , brown and warm. Let the guide introduce the Mekong to the others. Keys:The Mekong River is a major river in southeastern Asia. It is the longest river in the region. From its source in China’s Qinghai Province. The Mekong crosses Yunnan Province, China, and forms the border between Myan-mar (Burma) and Laos and most of the border between Laos and Thailand. Step7 Homework (1) Learn the useful new words and expressions in this part by heart. (2) Give them some key words and expressions. Then let them rewrite the passage in 80 words. Wang Kun and his sister ---after graduating---- thought of the idea----cycle----the Mekong River---- bought bicycles----got sb. interested in---- journey----begin----at an altitude of----change one’s mind---- atlas----in the library

Ⅷ Assessment
Check to see Assessment Everybody takes an active part in the activities. Students grasp the new words and structure in class. The tasks can be done successfully. Everyone is happy and cooperates well. We need to improve _______________________________________in group work.
