PROTECTIVE GROUNDING THIS INFORMATION DOCUMENTS PROCEDURES WHICH ARE TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE EQUIPMENT INSTALLER FOR PANELS SUPPLIED BY GE POWER SYSTEMS IN SALEM, VA. IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE REASONS FOR MANY OF THE PRACTICES THAT ARE RECOMMENDED, IT IS HELPFUL TO SEGREGRATE THESE PRACTICES INTO TWO CATEGORIES AS FOLLOWS: 1) THOSE GENERALLY REFERRED TO AS PROTECTIVE GROUNDING PRACTICES WHOSE PURPOSES ARE: A) TO PROTECT AGAINST THE RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR BURN B) TO PROTECT THE EQUIPMENT FROM FIRE OR OTHER DAMAGE DUE TO GROUND FAULTS OR LIGHTNING STRIKES. THESE PRACTICES WOULD TYPICALLY BE FOLLOWED BY THE INSTALLER IN COMPLIANCE WITH NEC OR OTHER CODE REQUIREMENTS. 2) THOSE PRACTICES WHICH IMPROVE THE EQUIPMENT IMMUNITY TO ELECTRICAL NOISE ORIGINATING WITHIN OR OUTSIDE THE EQUIPMENT. THESE COMPLEMENT THE PROTECTIVE GROUNDING AND LEVEL WIRING PRACTICES IN PROVIDING NOISE IMMUNITY,. 1) 2) 3)

GROUND PROCEDURES, CONTINUED THESE PROCEDURES ARE OVER AND ABOVE THOSE USED FOR PROTECTIVE GROUND. FOR NEW UNIT INSTALLATIONS, LEVELING BEAMS SHOULD BE IMBEDDED IN CONCRETE DURING FOUNDATION PREPARATION AND BRASED OR CAD WELDED TO THE BUILDING GROUND SYSTEM. FOR EXISTING CONSTRUCTION, IT IS SUFFICIENT TO USE A COLUMN OR FLOOR BEAM WITHIN TEN FEET OF THE EQUIPMENT. SOLIDLY BOLTED CONNECTIONS AT THE EQUIPMENT ARE DESIRABLE FOR 2 SO THAT THE GROUND CAN BE REMOVED TO ALLOW TROUBLE SHOOTING OF ANY SERIOUS GROUNDS WHICH MAY OCCUR LATER.

ALL METAL BUILDING STRUCTURES SUCH AS COLUMNS, FLOOR BEAMS, ETC. SHOULD BE GROUNDED BY AN INTERCONNECTING HEAVY CABLE 1 IN ACCORDANCE WITH RECOMMENDED BUILDING PRACTICES AND LOCAL CODES. ALL ELECTRICAL JOINTS AND CONNECTIONS TO THE BUILDING STRUCTURES SHOULD BE BRAZED OR CAD WELDED TO ASSURE THAT THE REQUIRED GOOD ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES DO NOT DETERIORATE WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME. ALL PANELS SHOULD BE GROUNDED AT ONE POINT USING A HEAVY SAFETY CABLE 2 REFER TO TABLE 1 FOR RECOMMENDED CABLE SIZES. THIS CABLE IS USUALLY GREEN, GREEN WITH YELLOW STRIPE, OR NON-INSULATED. THE SAFETY GROUND CABLE 2 SHOULD BE BRAZED OR CAD WELDED 2A TO A BUILDING GROUND CABLE AT ITS CONNECTION TO A BUILDING STEEL STRUCTURE THAT IS CLOSEST TO THE PANEL OR AS REQUIRED BY CODE. THE EQUIPMENT END 2B OF THE SAFETY GROUND 2 SHOULD BE BOLTED OR BRAZED TO THE "PROTECTIVE EARTH" TERMINATION POINT ON THE PANEL. THE EQUIPMENT GROUNDING TERMINAL IS A PLATED COPPER GROUND BUS BONDED TO THE PANEL USING BOLTING IN SUCH MANNER THAT THE CONDUCTING PATH HAS A RESISTANCE OF 0.1 OHMS OR LESS. THE GROUNDING CONDUCTORS MUST BE CAPABLE OF HANDLING ANTICIPATED GROUND FAULT CURRENTS. ANY TRANSFORMER SUPPLIED EXTERNALLY WILL ALSO USE THESE PROCEDURES. EACH SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN CONNECTION TO BUILDING GROUND GRID.

GROUND PROCEDURES TO ENSURE ELECTRICAL NOISE IMMUNITY GROUNDING OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS FOR IMMUNITY FROM INTERFERENCE AND RESISTANCE TO DAMAGE FROM EVENTS SUCH AS LIGHTNING OR SWITCHING SURGES IS A SYSTEM-LEVEL AND IN MOST CASES A PLANT-LEVEL PROBLEM OF IMMENSE COMPLEXITY. INSTALLATION PRACTICES MUST SIMULTANEOUSLY COMPLY WITH ALL CODES IN EFFECT AT THE TIME AND PLACE OF INSTALLLATION, AND PRACTICES WHICH IMPROVE THE IMMUNITY OF THE INSTALLATION. CHAPTER 9, AND IN PARTICULAR 9.10 OF STD 1100-1992 IS PARTICULARLY RELEVANT AND INFORMATIVE. CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR SAFETY OF PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT MUST TAKE PRECEDENCE IN THE CASE OF ANY CONFLICT WITH NOISE CONTROL PRACTICES. THE CONNECTION OF THE PROTECTIVE EARTH TERMINAL TO THE INSTALLATION GROUND SYSTEM MUST FIRST COMPLY WITH CODE REQUIREMENTS AND SECOND PROVIDE A LOW-IMPEDANCE PATH FOR HIGH FREQUENCY CURRENTS, INCLUDING LIGHTNING SURGE CURRENTS.
