In Group A, a dog and a person visited each patient for twelve minutes. Patients in Group B received just a human visitor for twelve minutes. And members of Group C received no visitors ,human or canine（犬的）. The dogs would lie on the hospital bed so the heart patients could touch them. The researchers say .some patients immediately smiled and talked to the dog and the human visitor. Dogs ,in her words, ―make people happier ,calmer and feel more loved.‖ The researchers examined the patients before ,during and after the visits. They measured stress levels based on blood flow and heart activity. They say they found a twenty-four percent decrease in the group visited by both a dog and a person. They reported a ten percent decrease in the group visited by a person only . There was no change in Group C without any visit. These patients, however , did have an increase in their production of the hormone epinephrine(epinephrine 肾上腺素). The body produces epinephrine during times of stress . D Five years ago ,David Smith wore and expensive suit to work every day. ―I was a clothes addict ,‖ he joked . ―I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.‖ Today David wears casual clothes—khaki pants and a sports shirt—to the office. He hardly even wears a necktie. ―I‘m working harder than ever,‖ David says, ―and I need to feel comfortable.‖ More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as ―dress-down Friday‖ or ―casual Friday‖ . ―What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.‖ Said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it‘s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code . ―A lot of young people don‘t want to dress up for work,‖ says the owner of a software company, ―so it‘s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.‖ Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company ,85% of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4% of employers said that casual dress code has a negative impact on productivity .Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money . ―Suits are expensive ,if you have to wear one every day,‖ one person said. ―For the same amount of money ,you can buy a lot more casual clothes.‖ 71．David Smith refers to himself as having been ―a clothes addict‖ because . We do not know for sure. In 1977 ,the American spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched into space . The spacecraft carried messages of greeting for any intelligent life forms .There was a difficult question to answer before the messages were sent .How could you ?talk‘ to an alien on another planet? How could aliens understand human life on Earth ? In other words, how should the messages be presented? Many people were surprised when scientists decided to send music instead of words or pictures. The scientists decided it was easiest to communicate through music. As a result , the message disc contained nearly 88 minutes of the ―Earth‘s greatest hits‖. ? Music is an easily understood art form. It is the most universal of languages. All people ,young or old, can appreciate it. When people hear a piece of music ,they usually link it with an emotionl. A piece of music can make you feel sad ,angry ,calm or joyful. The scientists thought that music expressed human feelings better than anything else .Every culture ,from the past to the present ,has created its own
music to express its sadness ,pain and happiness. Different pieces of music were chosen for variety. Included on the disc were traditional folk songs and music from China, Australia ,India ,Indonesia, Peru ,Japan ,Africa and Eastern Europe .Modern rock ?n‘ roll and a selection of Western classical music were also included. Were these really the Earth‘s greatest hits? They will certainly be the longest lasting. We are told that the disc ,which is made of gold-plated copper ,will last for 1,000 million years.
