Black Americans, who sang and played the music of their homeland, created jazz. Jazz is a mixture of the music of Africa, the work songs the slaves sang, and religious music. Improvisation is an important part of jazz. This means that the musicians make the music up as they go along, or create the music on the spot. This is why a jazz song might sound a little different each time it is played. Jazz bands formed in the late 1800s. They played in bars and clubs in many town and cities of South, especially New Orleans. New Orleans is an international seaport, and people from all over the world come to New Orleans to hear jazz. Jazz became more and more popular. By the 1940s, you could hear jazz not only in clubs and bars, but in concert hall as well. Today, people from all over the world play jazz. Jazz musicians from the United States, Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe meet and share their music at festivals on every continent. In this way jazz continues to grow and change. ( ) 56. You will find that expresses feelings that are often your own. Music is an expression of people. As you explore, you will find music of people at work, at play, and in worship(做礼拜). You will find expresses of love of country, love of nature, and love of home. Music is also an expression of the composer(作曲者). As an artist, the composer expresses his won music ideas. He studies that materials(素材) of music and discovers ways of using them. He looks for new kinds of musical expression. Music can suggest activities and feelings which we all share. We can enjoy playing and singing music, dancing and listening to the music of the people and the artists of different times and places. ( ) 61. The title of this passage can be____. A. A. you may listen to music at work or at play B. if we love music we will love the country, nature and home C. music mainly express of country, nature and home D. music can express how people live, work and think C Mathematical ability and musical ability may not seem on the surface to be connected, but people
who have researched the subject -- and studied the brain—say that they are. Research for my book “Later Talking Children” drove home the point to me. Three quarters of the bright but speech-delayed children in the group I studied had a close relative who was an engineer, mathematician or scientist, and four fifths had a close relative who played a musical instrument. The children themselves usually took readily to math and other analytical subjects and to music. Black, white and Asian children in this group show the dame patterns. However, looking at e larger world around us, it is clear that blacks have been greatly over represented in the development of American popular music and greatly underrepresented in such fields as mathematics, science and engineering. If the abilities required in analytical fields and in music are so closely related, how can there be this great discrepancy? One reason is that the development of mathematical and other such abilities requires years of formal schooling, while certain musical talents can be developed with little or no formal training, as has happened with a number of well-known black musicians. It is precisely in those kinds of music where one can acquire great skill without formal training that blacks have excelled popular music rather than classical music, piano rather than violin, blues rather than opera. This is readily understandable, given that most blacks, for most of American history, have not had either the money or the leisure for long years of formal study in music. Blacks have not merely held their own in American popular music. They have played a disproportionately large role in the development of jazz, both traditional and modern. A long string of names comes to mind—Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker… and so on. None of this presupposes any special innate ability of blacks in music. On the contrary, it is perfectly consistent with blacks having no more such inborn ability than anyone else, but being limited to being able to express such ability in narrower channels than others who have had the money, the time and the formal education to spread out over a wider range of music, as well as into mathematics, science and engineering. ( ) 66. what is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Mathematical ability and musical ability are connected. B. Mathematical ability has more to do with the brain than musical ability. C. More people are good at music than math. D. More research should be done into the relationship between mathematical ability and math ability. ( ) 67. The word “disparity” (Para. 3) most probably means ____. A. difference B. excellence C. inborn ability D. inability ( ) 68. What can be inferred about opera? A. It requires formal training. B. It is often enjoyed by those with strong analytical ability. C. It is disliked by blacks. D. It is more difficult to learn than classical music. ( ) 69. Which of the following statements ins true according to the last paragraph? A. Blacks have special innate ability in music. B. Unlike others, blacks do not have innate ability in music. C. Jazz is one of the narrow channels through which blacks express their ability in music. D. Those who have money and time choose mathematics over music. D When you are really big people listen to you. Perhaps that is why US basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal will release his fourth rap(说唱音乐) album nest year. An obvious example of this trend is David Beckham’s presence(出现) just about everywhere, selling everything. He is now going to make his first movie. Wimbledon tennis champion Maria Sharapova will become the advertising face of a new digital camera. And Chinese sports stars are also making the movie. Just look at all Liu Xiang’s adverts, which seem to be taking over TV. All this marketing of sports stars has made some people wonder whether it affects sport? From the 1970s to the 1980s, Elton published over 30 albums and made quite a lot of singing tours. He was known as the best rock-and-roll singer in the world after the Beatles because he filled the blank left by the disappearance of the latter in good time. Elton is not only a singer but also a philanthropist(慈善家). In 1993 he organized “Elton John AIDS Fund” and within four years he collected $12 million. It was the same interest in charity that made him a good friend of Princess Diana. He was given the title of Lard(勋爵)in 1995. Written by Bernie and sung by Elton in 1973, “Candle In the Wind 97” used to be a song especially for Marilyn Monroe, a famous US film star. One night he put it there as usual again but when he came down the next morning to go t his office, he found that the car wasn’t there. He called the police and told them about it. They said they would try to find the car. When Mr Smith came home from his office that evening, the car was back again in its usual place in front of his house. He was very happy and found two concert tickets and a letter on one of the seats. The letter said, “We are very sorry. We took your car because of something important. Thank you for your car.” Mr and Mrs Smith went to the concert with two tickets the next night and they enjoyed themselves very much. When they got home, they found the thieves nearly took everything in their house. If you have insomnia, you can listen to Beethoven’s “Moonlight”; if you feel lonely, you can listen to John Strauss’ “The Blue Danube”. Music is a way of relaxing as well as a way of communication. The communication ability of music is stronger than that of languages. You may not understand foreigners, but if you play a well-known music, you will become good friends. Music can teach something that you cannot find in books. We may not learn all the knowledge, but we cannot be an idiot on music. School is the place for study, but it needs music as well.
