Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created：
the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-confidence. Your level of self-confidence is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-confidence are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are mere victims. They are leaves tossed（摇摆）by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible. Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence. If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success. 41. People with low self-confidence are compared to leaves because they____________. A. are ready to change their minds B. are easily affected by windy weather C. don't have the power to face their fate D. can't control themselves in life 42. Losers would think that ___________. A. success is the result of hard work B. working hard will lead to success C. their failure is only because of bad luck
D. they don't make efforts to succeed 43. It can be inferred from paragraph 5 that ___________. A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes B. developing confidence is the key to future success C. thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action 44. The last paragraph serves as ____________. A. the proof of the author's points C. an introduction to another topic B. the conclusion of the argument D. a comparison between two views
45. Which is the best title for the text? _______________. A. Success is a choice C. Develop our confidence B. The secrets of success D. How to achieve success （ B ） One stormy night many years ago, an elderly man and his wife entered the hall of a small hotel in Philadelphia. Trying to get out of the rain, they came to the front desk hoping to get some shelter for the night. “Could you possibly give us a room here?” the husband asked. The clerk, a friendly man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conventions in town. “All of our rooms are taken”, the clerk said. “But I can’t send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o’clock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It’s not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you folks comfortable for the night.” When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll make out just fine,” the clerk told them. So the couple agreed. As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States. Maybe some day I’ll build one for you.” The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn’t easy.
Two years passed, the clerk had almost forgotten the incident when he received a letter from the old man. It recalled that stormy night and enclosed a round-trip ticket to New York, asking the young man to pay them a visit. The old man met him in New York, and led him to the corner of the Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. He then pointed to a great new building there, a pale reddish stone one, with turrets and watchtowers thrusting up to the sky. “That,” said the older man, “is the hotel I have just built for you to manage.” “You must be joking,” the young man said. “I can assure you I am not,” said the older man, a sly smile playing around his mouth. The older man’s name was William Waldorf Astor, and that magnificent structure was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The young clerk who became its first manager was George C. Boldt. This young clerk never foresaw the turn of events that would lead him to become the manager of one of the world’s most glamorous hotels. 46. Which of the following proverbs suits the story the best?

It is hard to go after the blue whale, the ocean’s largest creature, which has almost been killed off by commercial whaling and is now listed as an endangered species. Attaching radio devices to it is difficult, and sightings with bare eyes are too unreliable to give real insight into its behavior. So biologists were delighted early this year when, with the help of the Navy, they were able to track a particular blue whale for 43 days, monitoring its sounds. This was possible because of the Navy’s formerly top-secret system of underwater detecting（探测）devices across the oceans. Tracking whales is but one example of an exciting new world just opening to civilian（平民的） scientists after the cold war as the Navy starts to share and partly uncover its global network of underwater listening system built over the decades to track the ships of potential（潜在的）enemies. Earth scientists announced at a news conference recently that they had used the system for closely monitoring a deep-sea volcanic eruption（爆发）for the first time and that they plan similar studies. Other scientists have proposed to use the network for tracking ocean currents and measuring changes in ocean and global temperatures. The speed of sound in water is roughly one mile a second — slower than through land but faster than through air. What is most important, different layers of ocean water can act as channels for sounds, focusing them in the same way a stethoscope （听诊器） does when it carries faint noises from a patient’s chest to a doctor’s ear. This focusing is the main reason that even relatively weak sounds in the ocean, especially low-frequency ones, can often travel thousands of miles. 51. The passage is chiefly about ________. A）an effort to protect an endangered sea species B）the civilian use of a military system C）the introduction of a U.S. Navy top-secret weapon D）a new way to look into the behavior of blue whales 52. The underwater listening system was originally designed ________. A）to detect and locate enemy boats
B）to monitor deep-sea volcanic eruptions C）to study the movement of ocean currents D）to replace the global radio communications network 53. What is the closest meaning of the underlined word “to track” in the second paragraph? A）to study B）to fight against C）to follow D）to try to kill
54. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A）new radio devices should be developed for tracking the endangered blue whales B）blue whales are no longer endangered with the use of the new listening system C）opinions differ as to whether civilian scientists should be allowed to use military technology D）military technology has great potential uses outsides the military forces 55. Which of the following is true about the U.S. Navy underwater listening network? A）It is now partly accessible to civilian scientists. B）It has been replaced by a more advanced system. C）It became useless to the military after the cold war. D）It is a must in protecting endangered species.

a：I put on weight soon after I got married. b：Fame doesn’t necessarily mean success. c：Facts speak much louder than words. d：I like myself-as I am. and to be what you are. A. 1-a；2-d；3-b；4-c C. 1-c；2-d；3-b；4-a B. 1-c；2-b；3-d；4-a D. 1-a；2-b；3-c：4-d B In the 1960s，medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the 1ist,but so were some helpful life changing events like marriage.
When you take the Holmes Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress—it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal. with these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s， hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And，millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research. got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines tall titles like “Stress causes illness”. If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said，avoid stressful events. But such. simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even. if stressful events are dangerous，many—like the death of a loved，one—are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all， stressful events is a prescription for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful，a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we’re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult. Situation. But what about：human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with. more physical. and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can；lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure 46. The score of the Holmes Rahe test shows. A. how you can deal with life changing evens C. how stressful a major event can be B. how helpful events can change your life D. how much pressure you are under
47. Which of the following expressions has the meaning most close to the underlined phrase “got boiled down to” in paragraph two? A. was argued about C. was concentrated to 48. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs B. great fear over the mental disorder C. a careful research into stress related illnesses D. widespread worry about its harmful effects. B. was led to D. brought about .

Some are in favor of this way to promote traditional Chinese culture, while others are against it. Peking Opera, with a history of mole than 200 years，is widely regarded as a symbolic expression of Chinese culture. Included in students’ course，it will open a door to younger generation，helping them develop a better understanding and tastes about traditional culture. However, I disagree with the idea of making it a compulsory lesson for students nationwide. Peking Opera is too unfamiliar to be accepted in some parts of China，not to mention to learn it. Besides，Peking Opera is a sophisticated art form which requires years of professional training and. I worry there won’t be enough qualified teachers for the task. Moreover, once forced to learn, students might totally lose interest in it. Tastes differ from place to place. So I hold the strong belief that Peking Opera should only be taught in Beijing.
