[1]On the 15th of each month, a classroom at Pointers Run Elementary School in Maryland, is packed with volunteers.

Students like Campbell Snoddy collect food that by students, parents and teachers from each classroom. Then, the children check to make sure the food isn’t bad. After that, they sort it by category and put the cans and boxes into bags to be delivered to low-income senior citizens in the community. [2]“I wanted to teach my daughter about philanthropy(慈善), ”says Julie Rosenthal, who started the non-profit program six years ago. “And I wanted to teach other kids in the community, too. ” [3]Children make their deliveries around the 15th of the month, when money from monthly Social Security checks begins to run out and tough decisions between food and other needs have to be made. [4]“I am on a fixed income and the food has helped me out considerably, ”says Linda Testerman, a food receiver. [5]“It was really fun, it was great to make the senior citizens happy, ”says Campbell, “It was really cool. ” [6]Sofia Merkowitz, another Food on the 15th volunteer, agrees. “I really liked it because it made me feel really good that people were so happy that they got food. ” [7]Rosenthal says that is why she has children do more than fill a bag with donated food. [8]“We want the children to have first-hand experience delivering the food to the people so that they can get that feeling of really making a difference in somebody’s life, a positive difference. ” [9]The program started with one school delivering 30 bags of groceries. [1] Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict". He jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled”. Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever”. David says, “and I need to feel comfortable”. [2] More and more companies are allowing their office workers to ___________ in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday. This became known as “dress-down F riday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a –week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” Said business consultant Maisly Jones. [3] Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “Many young people don’t want to dress up for work”, says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code”. Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee motivation. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative influence on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day”, one person said, "For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes”. 1. Why does David Smith wear casual clothes now? [1]A one-person solar car that can be transformed into an electric moped(助力车), a door light powered by opening and closing a door and a cloak(披风)of invisibility are three innovative inventions recently created by college students. Here comes the sun [2]The 100-kilogram blue solar car invented by 10 students at Southwest University’s College of Engineering and Technology in Chongqing has a top with four solar panels that charge the battery that powers the auto. “The car is easy to drive. A person without any driving experience could learn to use it in several minutes. It fits for campus and the golf course, ”He Daijie, the leader of the invention team and a senior at the college, told the Global Times. “Or if one prefers it can be turned into an electric moped, ”he said. Seeing the light [3]Four students at Shenyang University of Technology in Liaoning Province invented a door light powered by electric energy produced by opening and closing a door. [4]When people open or close a door, tile door produces mechanical energy that could be turned into electric energy. After numerous tests for several months, the students fixed a joint lever ( ) above the door that connects the door and a speeding gear case to drive a generator attached to the door and send energy to storage cells. The storage cells provide for the light. Invisibility cloak [5]Many people daydream of an invisibility cloak like Harry Potter’s and three graduate students in optics(光学)from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics(航空航天)have actually invented one. Special Ferro-electric(铁电体)materials on the cloak reduce the scattering of light of an object wrapped with the cloak, and thus making the object “invisible, ”according to Li Peining, one of the three students. [1]Most of us have one or a few habits that we’d like to get rid of. But how do we do it? Now I’d like to share a few suggestions that have helped me. [2]Tell your friends and family. If you tell people around you that you will stop smoking, they will check up on you. You will feel a social pressure to keep up with your promise. I would recommend only telling the people who will support you. Negative people make things worse. [3]Listen to these who have gone where you want to go, not to people who have no practical or real ideas about what your challenge needs. It is important to get the best advice that actually works in real life. Seek it out in people around you, in the best books and on blogs that are reliable. [4]See your future self vividly in your mind. What will this lead to in 5 and 10 years? Where are you going? Towards a massive debt, a heart attack and other serious illnesses in your future?

Do you want to go to that place where you may wind up if you don’t make a change? Then see your future self where you have made the positive change. And remind yourself of the good or bad results; whenever you feel like going back to your old ways. [5] . If you stop doing one thing, it can leave a vacuum(真空)in your life. It’s easier not

to behave badly again if you replace that space with a new habit. If you had chips and candy at home to snack on, then have fruits and nuts to snack on. If you stopped checking the Internet for many hours, replace the space with reading more books. 1. What is the main idea of the text?(no more than 7 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 2. Complete the following sentence with words from Paragraph 2.
