Plot Summary A 13-year-old boy named Brian Robesen, his parents are divorced, he is living with his mother usually. During summer vacation, he lives with his father in Canada. In this summer

vacation, Brain was on his way to meet his father who lives in Canada by a small plane - Cessna 406, it was very small. Brian departed from New York City in his home, and that ’s where he is living with his mother. During the trip to Canada, the pilot suffers a heart attack and dies suddenly, and he is the only other person on the plane. Finally, it caused the plane crashed, it falls in a forest beside a lake. In the forest, there is no human being. Brain survived, but the plane crashed into the lake eventually, he tries to get out of the plane, then he swims from the plane to the lakeside. Brain has to find a place to sleep, he also wants to get some food to eat, and he do not know what to eat and what he may get. Brain is used to have food what is prepared. When he feels hungry, he is able to get food from refrigerator for what he wants, or buy some food in the stores or restaurants directly. Thus, he is never worried about getting food to eat. Now he cannot no sandwiches, hamburger, he must to find something for eating in the woods, and it was the only way that he could do. Brain not only eats berries, he is also bring many berries back by his self-made bag to save and keep them to eat after that. Brain wakes up and walks around, then he realized that he looks himself from into the lake, and it is too ugly, also extremely horrible, but he cries for several minutes, he is pitiful and pathetic. Brain meets a bear, a porcupine and many diverse animals in the woods, he succeeded to get food from the woods by himself, he eats turtle eggs, makes fire... Brain also tries to catch fishes in the lake. Therefore, Brain gets the ability to find food in the woods. The rescue aircraft passed him many times, but they did not found him, so he was hit hard, hoping to end his life as soon as possible. Brain sleeps again to make a clear mind, then he opens his eye in the second day. Brain sees wounds on his arm, he hates his weakness, gets to know what he needs to do next. Brain learned a lot and grew up, includes makes fire, catching and hunting the birds, rabbits. He trusts himself can be successful and he becomes confident to do everything, although he suffers from a tornado hit. At last, Brain went back the plane where it fell into the water, he used his hatchet which his mother prepared for him, he gets many useful things from the plane, such as scissors in a survival bag, hard breads, a gun with 50 bullets, and an emergency transmitter. Suddenly, there is a big noise on his head, there are two planes passes from his head. Character Development

During this whole trip, Brain absolutely grows up. Brain learns too much, he learned how he could be living and getting food from the woods. It includes how to make tools, how he can catch and hunt rabbits and birds for food to eat. After he suffers from a tornado hit, he gets to know that he should do something to survive. Brain learns how to use the emergency transmitter, an emergency transmitter of a plane received the signal that Brain sent before, he gets survival. Brain was always very collected in the presence of danger, he could solve all the problems that he met, he used the knowledge from watching television and life-saving lessons. But also, entire the progress of survival, he also learns a lot from the mistakes he made. Brain is facing the problems of hungry, fear and frightened in this isolated natural woods. Brain gets nothing to do, but there is no anyone can help Brain. Brain did really well, but Brain still mainly made three mistakes. At first, he should try to communicate with the outside world and then asks for somebody to help, but he do not need to try to survive. He cannot wait there, the pilot died before for maybe 15 minutes, and the plane was flying with a wrong direction, so it is really hard for people can search and found him. Although he can live in the woods for 54 days, it is a limited time, not forever he can stay there. The second thing is that there must be a wireless interphone on the plane, he can tell the control tower where he is, what is his direction now and so on. When the plane crashed, the airport will call somebody to help him and take him to go home, so that he can avoid the terrible and awful disaster. The third wrong thing is, it is must that there are some necessity for life on the plane. The plane crashed into the lake, that makes the plane not break enough, and these necessity for life is not able to be destroyed, because it was fortunate that the water was shallow and the plane did not explode. Moreover, there may still be able to send a signal by any devices in distress, the hatchet which he brought that his mother gave him before is still what he have, certainly he can use it. Setting In this book, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, it mainly through Brian's experiences living alone in the wilderness, from his trip to meet his father for living with in summer vacation who lives in Canada. During the time he is living in the woods, he encounters wolves, mosquitoes, a porcupine, quail, a bear, moose, and even suffers from a tornado. Brain found a closed and isolated environment for building a shelter to live in. At first, Brian were unable to deal with what has happened. He got nothing to do. Brian does not have too much time to dwell on his unhappy family situation, so Brain has to be survived by himself. Brian manages to crash the plane into a lake and tries not to be injured. It was as if his arms and hands were lead, but he succeeded with his strong perseverance, he tries to keep alive in the woods and then be successful, and gets everything what he needs for his body, such as drinks, foods, and he also build a shelter in any places for living.

Personal Reflection

The book tells us how he lives in the woods alone, gets foods by himself, and if he is thirsty, he drinks the water from the lake. Brian does not have too much time to dwell on his unhappy family situation, so Brain has to be survived by himself. Brian manages to crash the plane into a lake and tries not to be injured. He remembers that he still keeps the hatchet his mother had given him before he boarded the plane, so he thought about how he could use it. If it is I encountered such a bad thing like Brian, I am afraid that at most I can live there for two or three days, I think most of the children who grow up in the city, most of them do not have the ability to live in the wild. In my opinion, the schools are needed to add some field survival course to make students to learn and know more about how to survive in the natural wild environment. Fortunately, Brian realizes he needs to find food for eating, some water for drinking, and shelter, So that he could last until he would be saved. All the while, Brian is considering on rescuers appearing at any time. At the end of novel, we are able to learn that Brian is been changed, thanks to his practices, and he got exercises his in the woods. Brian spends a lot of time learning about some of the plants and animals that he'd known there, and he dreams much about his time on the lake. If I was in the situation likes Brian, but Brain was brave to try everything if he could do, he never gives up, and that is why I admire him very much Brian experienced many transformations through the course of the book, Brian grows up, he learns how to think positively. He is very clever by his own knowledge to survive, he builds a fire, and a shelter, makes a bed for sleeping. For food, he is fishing, includes catching fish, hunt, his clothes are also made by himself, but what he only has is a hatchet. Therefore, Brian is absolutely a succeed boy. Brain is successful to face on a lot of difficult problems for living and it was incredible for him to solve them, but he solved all the problems, in a complex and unfavorable environment until the rescuer comes to make Brain to save and get a helping hand.
