In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were not recognized quite a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common interests. So the focus is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say the educational system fails. It does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness. 36. According to the passage, the teachers thought ______ and ______ are very important in American school. A. interest and knowledge B. competition and friendliness C. curiousness and kindness D. happiness and interest 37. At present, many people argue about the idea of elementary school, because ______. A. schools give little actual instruction B. schools focus a lot on knowledge study C. children are not willing to help each other D. schools pay more attention to competition. 38. Why do Americans focus on co-operation? A. Because American society is a highly competitive society B. Because Americans accept the idea that people need to work together C. Because co-operation will lead to a few criminals D. Because American former educational system failed 39. The text tells us the following things about elementary education EXCEPT ______. A. the atmosphere in school B. the aims C. future D. the method 40. The writer’s attitude towards American education is ______. A. positive B. negative C. neutral (中立的). D. doubtful

I stood at the window and watched the neighborhood children flying their kites on the

hill behind our house. Next to me, my four-year-old son, Michael, pressed his face against the glass. Then, looking up at me with pleading eyes, he again asked if he could have a kite. Ever since he had first seen the children on the hill, Michael had been asking the same question, and had been given the same answer: “Wait till you are a little older.” Michael hid his face in my skirt, something he always did when he was going to cry and didn’t want me to see. I felt like crying myself. Because of my health I simply didn’t have the strength or energy to fly a kite with Michael, and Michael was too young to fly a kite all by himself. My husband worked long, irregular hours, and even so we kept going deeper in debt. As a result, a tension had grown between us. Michael was the one spark of life left for me. As I put him into bed that evening, he said, “Mummy, may I pray to God to send me a yellow kite?” “Yes,” I said. “We will leave it up to him.” I was tired of the whole thing and hoped that maybe this would make Michae stop talking about it. The next morning I raised the shade in the kitchen, and stared at the sight that met my eyes—a string hanging down in front of the window. I ran out of the back door. There was a kite, a yellow one. Michael clapped his hands and jumped up and down. “Mummy, I knew God would answer my prayer!” I didn’t believed. We asked all over the neighborhood but we never found the kite’s former owner. My depression left me, and as my health improved, so did my relationship with my husband. All I needed was comfort; no matter what it is, the kindness always exists in my heart. 41. When the author’s son was about to cry he ________. A. always went out to fly his kite with his friends B. always hid his face in his mother’ s skirt C. always pressed his face against the glass D. was always angry and ignored his mother. 42. Why didn’t the author buy her son a kite? A. She thought it was unsafe to fly a kite on the hill. B. She was too busy to fly a kite with her son. C. She didn’t have enough energy and money. D. She didn’t want to spend the money. 43. Which of the following would be the reason for the author not giving herself up? A. Her son’s birth and growing up. B. Her husband’s deep love for her. C. Her dream of rich life. D. Her belief in God who would help her. 44. What can we learn about the author’s husband according to the passage? A. He bought the yellow kite for his son. B. He had a very good job but earned a little. C. He didn’t love his wife and son any more. D. He couldn’t earn enough money to support his family. 45. From the text we can conclude that ________. A. it’s important to give a child what he wants B. a kindness helps change a person and a family

C. there are many unhappy families in the world D. sometimes good luck will come to anybody

Enid's wedding(婚礼) dress arrived at five o'clock in the evening just seventeen hours before her marriage! “I must try it on, Mother!” she cried, as she ran upstairs. Three minutes later Enid's cries brought her mother in. The dress was much too big for her. It was baggy in the front, and the neckline looked all wrong. Enid was in tears. “Take it back to dressmaker's,” Mrs Bale said. “She must alter it tonight. Hurry now. Take it off and go.” The dressmaker's shop was closed. “CLOSED FOR ONE WEEK'S HOLIDAY” said a notice on the door. Fresh tears rose to Enid's eyes. She ran home again to her mother. “This is unlucky, ”Mrs Bale said.” But what are we going to do? Shall I ask Mrs Peters to help? She was a dressmaker once. I'm sure she could alter it for you.” Mrs Peters was brought in and began to work. She could see what was wrong. She had to take in a lot of material at the front, and that was a big job. Then she altered the neckline—in fact she made it again. At ten o'clock the work was finished, and Enid tried the dress on. It fitted her beautifully. The three women were having a cup of tea when the doorbell rang. Mrs Bale answered it and looked into the worried eyes of a fat young woman. The woman was carrying a large, flat box. “Does Miss Enid Bale live here?” she asked breathlessly. “Yes. She's my daughter.” “Oh, I'm glad I've found you! There's been a mistake. Thailand is a country with a diverse scenery. There is somewhere to visit at whatever time of the year. In central Thailand and the eastern provinces, the hot summer weather starts around mid February and goes on to April. In April, the extreme temperatures can go up to the 40 degrees centigrade. The winter months are from mid November to mid February. There may only be a few days of sincerely cold weather during these months. The rainy season kicks in from May to October. The rain is frequent and sometimes fierce. Usually rainstorms go on for around 30 minutes or so. If you’re visiting the beach destinations in the east (Pattaya , Rayong , Koh Chang), the best time is from December to May. Northem Thailand and the Northeast have the same basic seasons although the winters are significantly cooler. Mountainous regions can get particularly cold, on some occasions down to 0 degrees centigrade. In these parts, winter starts in November and goes on to February. Without doubt the rest months are the best — flowers are in bloom, it is dry and cool, and in the mountains fogs often form, making it quite a wonderful scenery. April is also a great month — during the Songkran Festival people will most likely throw water at you. Southern Thailand has only two seasons — summer and the rainy season. The Gulf of Thailand lies to the east of the Thai peninsula(半岛) while the Andaman Sea lies to the west. Visiting areas west of the peninsula (Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi) is best done between mid November and April to avoid the monsoons(季风) that occur during other months — monsoons obviously make visiting islands by boat difficult and sometimes dangerous. Areas east of the peninsula (Koh Samui, Hat Yai) are best visited from December to June. 56. What does the author intend to do by writing the text? A. To introduce the tourism about the Thai peninsula B. To tell us the best time to visit different parts of Thailand C. To show the diversions of weather in Thailand D. To advertise for a tour company 57. Which is the best time to visit the eastern provinces in Thailand? A. From Mid February to April B. Between November and April C. Form December to May D. During the songkran Festival 58. Which statement is true according to the third paragraph? A. All the mountains are in Northern Thailand B. The beautiful mountainous scenery amuses many visitors C. Visitors are forbidden because of its cold weather D. People throw water at visitors for its dry weather

59. Why should we avoid monsoons while visiting Phang Nga? A. There are fogs in this area B. Southern Thailand has only two seasons C. The temperature is not so comfortable D. It is sometimes dangerous to travel by boat 60. We can know from the text that 。 A. Koh Chang is one of the provinces of Thailand B. it is dry and hot in Central Thailand C. many visitors tour Thailand all the year round D. Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand have the same season

Coming from cold and cloudy England, I was prepared for the sun and dresssed in a T-shirt and a short skirt. Not having much chance to enjoy the sun in the UK and having naturally fair skin, my legs are very white. In the UK this is not a fashionable(时尚的) look at all. Most women spend every sunny day out in the sun trying to get darker skin. The darker the skin, the better the look. As I walked around one shop, the two shop assistants didn’t take their eyes off me the whole time, talking quietly in Chinese .I began to feel uncomfortable and asked my friend if we could leave. After we left the shop, she asked me what was wrong. I was embarrassed that they were talking about my white skin. My friend laughed. “They were not laughing at you .They were saying how nice your legs are. Many Chinese women want to have white skin like yours. In fact, there are many beauty products in the shops to make skin whiter and a lot of money is spent on them.” It just goes to show that we always think what others have is better. The grass is always greener on the other side. If the women of the West and East thought the same way, Western women wouldn’t spend so much money on cream that makes skin darker and women from the East wouldn’t need to use cream that makes skin whiter . 81. I bought it from your website several days ago. However, there seems to be something wrong with it. First, the voice isn’t so clear as you claimed. Second, it’s not easy to operate, which has caused me much trouble. What I expect is a human-friendly one. Third, it often breaks down, while a recording pen at such a price shouldn’t have had so many

Best wishes, Yours, Li Hua
