In America, when people say “man’s best friend”, they don’t mean another person. Instead, they are talking about a lovely animal：A dog! These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give happiness to people’s lives. Some people regard their pets as their children. A few even leave all their money to their pets when they die! Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be taught to become the “eyes” for a blind person or “ears” for a deaf people. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, animals are brought into hospitals for “visit”. Americans hold “Be-Kind-to-Animals Week” in the first week of May. Pets shows are held during the week. Even if you don’t live in America, you, too, can do this. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food. Also, be sure to keep your pet from those unwanted babies. If you don’t have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don’t kick it or throw things at it. Instead, just leave it alone, or better yet, make friends with it. What’s more，people who ate plenty of vegetables，fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression，the University College London team found. Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants (公务员) were compared with their emotional state five years later，a British journal reported．They split the participants into two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based on whole food， which includes lots of fruit， vegetables and fish， and those who ate a mainly processed food diet， such as sweetened desserts， fried food， processed meat， refined grains and high fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender，age，education， physical activity，smoking habits and chronic diseases，they found a significant difference in the future depression risk with the different diets. Those who ate the most whole food had a 26％ lower risk of future depression than those who ate the least whole food. By contrast，people with a diet high in processed food had a 58％ higher risk of depression than those who ate a diet low in processed food. Study author Dr. Archana SinghManoux pointed out there was a chance the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for. “There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in Britain，the likelihood of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.” Dr. Andrew McCulloeh, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said, “this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links
between what we eat and our mental health.” He added people’s diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK population is consuming less nutritious， fresh produce and more saturated (含饱和脂肪 酸的) fats and sugars. 36. The text is mainly about . D. Those who ate whole food generally were happier in the long term. 38. What can we learn from what Dr. Archana SinghManoux said? A. It is difficult for most British people to have a Mediterranean diet. B. The Mediterranean diet is the healthiest in the world. C. Many studies have been done on the Mediterranean diet before. D. The Mediterranean diet is not good for depression. 39. Dr. Andrew McCulloch agrees that ____ . A. our diets are closely related to our mental health B. the present study needs more facts and other information C. the UK population will become ill in the near future D. more saturated fats and sugars should be taken in 40. Why might the author have written this text? A. To tell people what a healthy diet actually is. B. To prove people’s diets are increasingly unhealthy. C. To encourage people to cut down processed food. D. To introduce some experts on the research team. C Do you think you are smart? If you are not sure, You Are Smarter Than You Think by an American teacher Thomas Armstrong will tell you: you are smart in some way. To show this, Thomas tells the story of his life. When he was little, he did badly at school and was sent down a year. But later on, he found he was good at writing. He worked hard and became a writer and teacher. Being smart does not just mean being good at school tests. There are many other ways to be smart. Thomas Armstrong says there are different types of intelligence: music, sports, space, getting on with people, being able to understand yourself, and being good at natural history. Every child has any one of these intelligences. The point is how to find them and make use of them. Each child comes into the world with some talent(天赋). If the child is helped, he
can do better in our world. Parents and teachers must help the child to keep those gifts. Thomas says a good way to build these intelligences at home or school is story-telling. If you want to be friendly with other people, you can prepare a story and put on a play before other people. It is the same with musical intelligence, since you can make the lyrics(歌词)of a song! If you want to know more about ways to be smart, write to You Are Smarter Than You Think at www.thomasarmstrong. 41. Thomas Armstrong thinks that ______. Many students want to find friends on the Internet as a way of practising their language skills and learning more about new cultures. Traditional pen pals were the primary source for such contacts, and students could write each other letters. With the Internet, finding friends has become much easier, and such relationships are called key pals. However, care and consideration should be given when finding friends on the Internet: ◎Search the Internet for reputable(有信誉的) services. Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about other students’ experiences. Don’t join a service until you have done your research. ◎Check to see if you can use a nickname, instead of __________, to protect your identity. ◎Never give personal information to anyone, including your home address, phone
number, and birthday. ◎Stop contact with others if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of conversation. Again, if you protect your identity, this will be easier to do. Tell your teachers, parents, or even local law enforcement if problems arise. ◎Try to use the language you are studying in the classroom in your communication with others. ◎Ask appropriate questions that will also help you learn about other cultures. Remember that someone’s personal experience might help you to understand a whole culture. You have to talk to many different people, and this will get you started. 46.
