Job or Money? Would

you quit your job if you didn’t need the money? In a 1990 poll by the Gallop Organization, many people said quitting work was an important reason to be rich.Yet researchers find that work is one of life’s chief satisfactions for people. Consider W.Berry Fowler. In 1979,Fowler started a tutoring company that became so successful he was able to sell out and retire in 1988 一 a multimillionaire at 40. He bought a 50-foot cabin cruiser(可住宿的游艇)and a house in Hawaii, and busied himself vacationing. But after five years of perpetual vacation, Fowler began to miss the challenges of work.So in 1992,he bought a fitness chain for children and now spends 75 hours a week immersed in balance sheets and staff meetings.“My best days on the golf course weren’t half as much fun as a good day at the office.”he says. A job, studies show,is more than a paycheck(薪水支票).Doing something well can increase confidence and self-worth.When sociologist H.Ray Kaplan surveyed 139 lottery(彩票)millionaires,he discovered 60 percent continued working at least a year after they’d won. If jobs are so important, wouldn’t salary size be a gauge(标准尺)of job satisfaction?Americans think so.A survey conducted last year by Roper Starch WorldwideInc.,found that almost 70 percent of the respondents said they would be happier if their families had twice as much household income.Yet studies show that job satisfaction comes less from how much people earn than from the challenge of their jobs and the control they are able to exert.Work that doesn’t engage a person will never seem rewarding,no matter how lucrative(有利可图的)it becomes. 1.1.15.0 A 1990 Gallop shows that many people quit work in order to be rich.

b False

?

Yet researchers find that work is one of life’s chief satisfactions for people. 1.1.35.0 Fowler was a tutor in 1979.

In 1979,Fowler started a tutoring company that became so successful he was able to sell out and retire in 1988 一 a multimillionaire at 40. He bought a 50-foot cabin cruiser(可住宿的游艇)and a house in Hawaii, and busied himself vacationing. 1.1.55.0 After his retirement at the age of 40, Fowler didn’t return to work any more.

?

a True

?

b False

?

1.1.65.0 As far as Fowler was concerned, playing golf wasn’t as funny as working in the office.

?

?

a True

?

b False

?

c Not Given

If jobs are so important, wouldn’t salary size be a gauge(标准尺)of job satisfaction?Americans think so. 1.1.105.0 A job that a person doesn’t show any interest in is not worthwhile regardless of its salary size
?

a True

?

b False

?

Work that doesn’t engage a person will never seem rewarding,no matter how lucrativeit becomes. 需要注意的是该句中的 engage 意为“引起某人的兴趣”,题干中换成了 show interest in;rewarding 意为“值 得的,有意义的”,题干中换成了 worthwhile;no matter how lucrative it becomes 换 成了题干中的 regardless of its salary size。

There is a measurable relation between how much a person learns and his attitude toward the subject to be learned. When faced with a difficult learning task, one path to success is to concentrate on the positive aspects of the subject matter. If a student has a boring teacher, one solution is to look for the positive aspects of completing the course, regardless of how boring the teacher happens to be. To

accomplish this might require a private tutor or some independent reading, but with the right attitude, success is possible. Over-achievers—students who do better than their test scores show—usually have a positive interest toward learning. They may learn some things more slowly, and they may make more efforts, but, to compensate (补偿), they are often better at applying what they have learned. As long as they do not have emotional problems, they are successful. Under-achievers—those whofunction below their ability shown by test scores—often tend to allow a few negative factors to affect them. Because of their negative attitudes, they sometimes become unfairly critical of teachers. They allow themselves to get bored when it is not necessary. In short, their attitudes often cause them to learn less than over-achievers. If you learn to replace a negative attitude toward learning with something more positive, you are on the road to achieving almost any goal you desire. For example, if you realize a personal computer with a word processor would improve your performance, but have an attitude that keeps telling you that a computer is difficult to operate, you tend to make all kinds of excuses. In short, you resist making full use of a terrific tool, simply because your negative attitude prevents you from learning. 2.1.15.0 What does the author think a student should do if he has a boring teacher?
?

a Look for a new course.

?

b Be critical of the teacher.

?

c Complete the course with a good score.

?

d Have a right attitude toward thecourse.

2.1.25.0 The writer thinks that over-achievers and under-achievers mainly differ in __________.
?

a their test scores

?

b their judgment of others

?

c their attitudes toward learning

?

d their skills in using computers 2.1.35.0 The underlined phrase“function below their ability shown by test scores”means the under-achievers__________.

?

a often get low scores in tests

?

b do worse in actual learning than in tests

?

c usually do better in tests than the over-achievers

?

d are always slow in learning and have to make more efforts 2.1.45.0 The example of the personal computer shows that __________.

?

a finding excuses helps in learning

?

b to react negatively can be harmful

?

c hard-working is the key to success

?

d making use of the computer is important 2.1.55.0 What is the main idea of the passage?

?

a Attitudes play an important role in learning.

?

b Students should learn how to use personal computers.

?

c Teachers are not so important in the learning process.

?

d There are many differences between over-and under-achievers. Most cell phones hate water. Get a few drops under the case, and that horrible little wetness indicator next to the battery goes red. Next thing you know, your phone doesn’ t work, and your carrier won’t replace it. So bringing your phone to the beach can be a bad idea. The good news is that there are three types of cell phones built specifically for active fun. The Casio Exilim C721 on Verizon Wireless is the ultimate summer phone. That is because it also doubles as a waterproof, 5-megapixel camera—so you can leave your old digital camera at home, too. The Exilim is covered by a protective coating so you can shoot underwater. It’s also proven as being against shock. If you spend a lot of time at the beach, this phone will be your best friend. Outdoors sportsmen should consider the unlocked Sonim XP3.20 Quest, which is the world’s toughest phone--a claim I have tested. It can be tossed around violently, frozen, put into water, hit with a chisel, and used to hammer nails. Even if it does break, it comes with a no-questions-asked replacement promise. The Nextel i580 is the way to go if you’re worried about durability. Bear in mind: It isn’t waterproof, it’s water-resistant--it’ll survive a quick dunk or splash, but you can’t submerge it. In my tests, it survived freezing, washing, dropping from a second-story window, and getting run over by a sports car. The i580 also has great call quality and a built-in MP3 player. 2.2.15.0 According to the author, why is bringing your phone to the beach a bad idea?

?

a Because your carrier does not permit the use of cell phones at the beach.

?

b Because cell phones would not work if there is water inside.

?

c Because the wetness indicator would go red at the beach.

?

d Because few people bring their cell phones to the beach. B。 2.2.25.0 What makes the Casio Exilim C721 the ultimate summer phone?

?

a Its stylish design.

?

b Its protective coating.

?

c Its resistance to shock.

?

d Its waterproof, 5-megapixel camera. That is because it also doubles as a waterproof, 5-megapixel camera。 2.2.35.0

What would happen if you want to replace your broken Sonim XP 3.10?
?

a It would be replaced without question.

?

b It would be replaced by a locked XP 3.10.

?

c You would be questioned about how you broke it.

?

d You have to pay a minimum amount of fees for repairing it. Even if it does break, it comes with a no-questions-asked replacement promise. 2.2.45.0 What qualities does the Nextel i580 have?

?

a It can be submerged, frozen and washed.

?

b It can be submerged, washed, and run over by a sports car.

?

c It can be frozen, washed, and dropped from a second-story window.

?

d It can be broken, frozen and dropped from a second-story window.

2.2.55.0 The main purpose of the passage is to __________.
?

a explain how cell phones work

?

b introduce three types of cell phones

?

c discuss the fun of using mobile phones

?

d describe the harm of water to cell phones 主旨题。
