The th chain of events unfolded late in the evening on Sunday, January 26 , 2014 when Danny Dipietro was being driven home from hokey practice by his dad. That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage and a figure that he believed was a dog outside an apartment near his house. Given the extremely cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing(不 予理会) it like most kids at his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, go to examine what was going on. Dawn tried to convince Danny that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer. Dawn finally gave in and decided to take a walk to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s premonition(预感). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment she noticed a garage that was wide open and a bent figure, waving madly. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog that the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge, one of her neighbors. The 80-year-old had slipped

on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up. Dawn rushed home to get her husband for help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance to arrive. Though still in hospital, the elderly woman is recovering well and grateful to Danny for his premonition. 41. Why didn’t Dawn want to have a look at first? A. Because it was too cold outside. B. Because she thought Danny lied. C. Because she didn’t think people would leave a dog out on such a cold day. D. Because she was busy with her work. 42. When Danny Dipietro’s mother found the elderly woman, the elderly woman _______. A. had lain in the garage for two hours B. was trapped in her garage with her dog C. was looking for her dog around the garage D. was lying on the ice outside the garage dead 43. Which of the following is TRUE? A. Danny likes playing hockey with his father. B. Ms. St. Onge appreciates Danny’s premonition. C. Danny loves animals especially dogs very much. D. Ms. St. Onge is an old woman who lives alone. B Once upon a time, there was an empty storybook. The book looked great, with an impressive cover, but all its pages were blank. You can imagine how people felt when they picked up the book with great hope. They would always throw it away at last. Not far from there, a lovely inkwell(墨水池) had been full of ink for years, but forgotten and left it in some corner by his owner. Complaining about their bad luck, the inkwell and the storybook just spent their days. One time when the book was thrown away, he ended up next to the inkwell. For days and days the two swapped stories about their bad luck, and they could have carried on for years, if an elegant swan(天鹅) feather had not floated down and landed next to them. Having fallen from his swan, the feather felt lonely and abandoned for the first time in his life. He cried and cried, and the book and the inkwell joined in, letting out all their sadness at the years of neglect. However, unlike his companions, the feather soon tired of crying. He determined to improve the situation. Drying his tears, he clearly saw how the three of them, working together, could achieve a lot more than just suffering. He convinced his friends to write a story after several failed attempts. The storybook opened up his best pages, the inkwell didn’t spill even a drop, and the feather contributed great beautiful writing. Together they managed to write a lovely story about three friends who helped each other to improve their lives. Then a young teacher passed by, head down and looking greatly troubled. He found the storybook, the inkwell and the feather. The teacher read the book, and found the story amazing. He picked up the three artists, and continued on his way to school.

-4-

When lessons began he told the story to his pupils, and for the first time he kept the attention of all his pupils. Every night from then on, the feather, the inkwell, and the storybook got together and wrote a new story for the young teacher. They felt so happy and proud at having managed to improve their own fate. 44. When people turned over the pages of the empty storybook they would feel__________. A. shocked B. curious C. excited D. disappointed 45. What happened to the storybook and the inkwell after they met? A. They complained to each other about their sad life. B. They soon got tired of talking about their sad life. C. They decided to improve their situation together. D. They cried all day to let out their sadness. 46. What can we learn about the feather’s plan of writing a story? A. It was happily accepted by the storybook and the inkwell. B. It was hard for the storybook and the inkwell to accept at first. C. The book and the inkwell didn’t carry it out carefully at first. D. It was meant to record the sad life of the three. 47. What troubled the young teacher before he found the storybook? A. How to keep his pupils’ attention at class. B. How to improve his relationship with his pupils. C. Where to find amazing stories for his pupils. D. Whether to find an interesting job. C When people think of high-tech jobs, they typically think of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and Ivy League Ph.D.s(硅谷企业家和常春藤大学的博士). But according to a new definition of STEM jobs —half of all high-tech positions are held by employees without a bachelor's degree. A recent report by the Brookings Institution redefines STEM jobs to include those with a basic technical knowledge, but not necessarily requiring a bachelor's degree. With this new viewpoint, high-tech jobs are not limited to advanced degrees and represent a larger part of the American middle class. The average STEM job available to workers without a bachelor's degree paid $53,000, 10% higher than other jobs requiring similar educational qualifications. Among the eight most popular STEM jobs that do not require a college degree, six paid more than the national annual average salary of $45,230. There were nearly 500,000 people working as computer systems analysts in 2011, a position that does not require a bachelor's degree and paid $82,320, on average. Though a four-year college degree is not an only factor, many of these jobs still have strict requirements. Most plumbers( 管道工 ), pipefitters and steamfitters go through a four-or five-year apprenticeship(学徒)program, which includes studying math, physics and chemistry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Registered nurses, by far the fastest growing STEM job that does not require a bachelor's degree, need to take courses in anatomy ( 解 剖 学 ) , chemistry and microbiology.

-5-

Jonathan Rothwell, author of the report said, "The course requirements for some of these jobs include things like electronics, physics, engineering, and technology. There're usually some math requirements too." These workers, Rothwell added, also necessarily have longer periods of on-the-job training than many jobs that require a college degree. Many sub-bachelor STEM jobs have soared. According to Rothwell, there has been strong growth in health care and computer systems occupations, while production occupations have been decreasing. According to BLS projections, from 2010 to 2020, the numbers of registered nurses and computer systems analysts will rise 26% and 22%, respectively. 48. The Brooking Institution considers high-tech jobs_________. A. are mostly done by Ivy league Ph.D.s B. are mostly done by employees with a bachelor’s degree C. unnecessarily require a bachelor’s degree D. are mostly done by the American upper class 49. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us the salary information of _______. A. jobs not requiring educational qualifications. B. some STEM jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree C. some system analysts with a bachelor’s degree D. some STEM jobs not requiring a bachelor’s degree 50. According to the passage, registered nurses should _________. A. get a bachelor’s degree in medicine B. master math, physics and chemistry C. experience a four-year apprenticeship program D. master chemistry, microbiology and anatomy 51. What is the meaning of the underlined word “soared” in the last paragraph. A. Disappeared suddenly. B. Grown quickly C. Reduced gradually D. Changed quickly D Whether they have worked to develop their abilities or were simply born with them, some of us are able to accomplish things that most would think possible only in comic books(漫画书). While some of the unbelievable abilities are as a result of highly specialized changes in the physical(身体上的) make-up of the body, others have trained their natural abilities beyond what we would consider possible. Michel Lotito had the ability to eat and digest(消化) something special, including metal glass and even poisonous material. He cuts up and eats a variety of objects during his life, like bicycles and old TV sets. Michel has a stomach twice as thick as normal, and he swallows around nine tons of things mentioned above during his life before dying of natural causes. Scott Flanzburg has such great math skills that he’s regarded as the fastest human calculator(计算器). He is able to add, subtract(减), multiply, divide and even calculates square and cube roots in his head faster than the most gifted mathematicians. He is often invited to various TV shows and conferences. 15 years ago, Ma Xiangang saw a sudden flash of light and found a broken electrical

-6-

wire outside his house. While trying to move it he suddenly realized that the line he was holding was alive, leading him to discover he was immune(免疫的) to electricity. Later tests showed that Ma could bear 220 volts(伏) of electricity without injury. Gradually, Ma became addicted to electricity, to the point that he now says in fact he feels active by touching it. Wim Hof’s ability to bear extreme cold may not seem like a superhuman power unless you consider he can do it for 5 hours and 25 minutes straight, wearing no shoes and only a pair of shorts in the arctic circle, or the temperature is nearly -20℃. Wim says that he can bear extreme cold temperatures because he can turn his own thermostat(恒温器)up by using his mind. Scientific studies have suggested anyone can develop their own talents to such a degree as to be even considered amazing superhumans. 52. According to the author a superhuman is the one ___________. A. whose ability was formed when he was just born B. who can finish what most people think impossible C. who developed his ability when he was a child D. who eats or digests anything you think difficult to eat 53. Who has the strongest ability of the stomach? A. Wim Hof B. Ma Xiangang C. Michel Lotito D. Scott Flanzburg 54. Ma Xiangang discovered he was immune to electricity by _______. A. holding a wire alive by chance B. experiencing a number of tests C. experiencing a sudden flash of light D. moving the electrical wire by his body 55. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Wim uses his mind to turn on the thermostat of his body. B. Scott Flanzburg is able to calculate faster than a calculator. C. It is possible for everyone to become an amazing superhuman. D. Scott Flanzburg has attended many TV shows. 56.
