Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people, the thought of food as the first thing in the morning is never a pleasure. So in spite of all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the number of people who didn't have breakfast increased by 33 % —from 8.8 million to 11.7 million—according to the Chicago-Based Market Research Corporation of America. 例 1 Beware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, ―I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!‖ This guy‘s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's a big loser! He didn‘t say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. That‘s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest. Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Let‘s say that during Governor Smith‘s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, ―During Governor Smith‘s term, the state lost one million jobs!‖ That‘s true. However, an honest statement would have been, ―During Governor Smith‘s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.‖ This kind of deception happens too often. It‘s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well. Question: Suppose a boy said he was late for school because he had a flat tire with his bike, how can you find he is telling half-truth? (Please answer within 20 words.) Answer: He didn‘t tell that he took a bus to school. / He had a flat tire after he got to school. 例 2 Having one of those days or weeks when everything seems to annoy you? 例 2 Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension Help your child keep what he reads — a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks. 1. Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too. 2. Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard. He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story. Question: If a child is reading a 900-word-long passage, how many words should he recognize at least according to the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.) Answer:He should recognize at least 810 words.

1 Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie (柯利大牧羊犬) named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee. In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to

get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination (排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be ________ the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品 种) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 76. What is mainly talked about in the passage? You'll live in a big house in Hollywood, go to the Oscars every year — and win! You'll be rich and famous. Wait a minute, you also hate having your photo taken, and you're very shy, so how could you ever become a movie star? Choosing the right career can be hard. Many people graduate from school or college not knowing what to do with their lives, and get a job without really thinking about it. For some, things work out fine, but others often find themselves stuck in a job they hate. Your working life lasts an average of forty years, so it's important to find a job you like and feel enthusiastic about. Luckily, there are many ways you can get help to do this. The Australian website, www.careersonline.com, compares choosing a career with going to the movies. Before you see a movie you find out what films are showing. The site suggests you should do the same with your career — find out what jobs are available and what your options (选择) are. Next, decide which movie you like best; if you're not a romantic person, you won't want to see a love story. In other words, with your career, you should decide which job will suit your personality. Finally, decide how to get movie tickets, and find out where the theater is before you go. With your career,

11

you need to find information about where you can work, how much you will earn, and how to get a job in that profession. So how do you start? Begin by asking yourself some questions. Some jobs require you to have certain life experiences: Have you traveled overseas? Do you have any extra certificates besides your degree, such as a first aid license for example? Your physical state and build can also affect which jobs you can do. Flight attendants, firefighters and police officers have to be over a certain height, and be physically fit. Your personality matters, too. Are you outgoing and extroverted(外向性的), or shy and introverted? If you like working alone, a job that requires lots of teamwork might not ____________. Modem dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exacting technique, no foundation from which to build. In later years trial, error, and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators even drew from what they considered the dread ballet, but first they had to discard all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modem dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed. Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the tree and the rolling waves of the sea and should be in harmony with the movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas. First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movements that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity shown by complicated positions and movements. Duncan performed

12

dance by using all her body in the freest possible way. Her dance stemmed from her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art. Her second contribution lies in dance costume. She discarded corset (束腹), ballet shoes, and stiff costumes. These were replaced with flowing Grecian tunics (束缚外衣), bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this ideal. Her third contribution _____________________. In her performances she used the symphonies of great masters, including Beethoven and Wagner, which was not the usual custom. She was as exciting and eccentric (古怪的) in her personal life as in her dance. 76. What would be the best title of the text? They had planned to live in an apartment with furniture or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of furniture (beds, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America's fastest growing industries. What kind of people ____________________? Many kinds of people: international businessman, government officials, airline workers, young married couples — the people whose jobs or business may force them to move very often from one city to another. They try to save the trouble and cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new home. Young people with little money don't want to buy cheap furniture that they will soon grow to dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy. One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked rented furniture so much. They decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But they don't like to tell people about it. The idea of renting furniture is still quite new. and they are not sure what their neighbors might think. 76. What does the passage mainly talk about? 5 Statistics show that in mathematics, at least, girls are equal to boys. A recent report suggests that girls only stop studying mathematics because of social attitudes. One of the reports' authors says, "While it is socially unacceptable for people not to be able to read and write, it is still acceptable for women to say that they are 'hopeless' at math. Our research shows that, although girls get marks which are as good as the boys', they have not been encouraged to do so." The explanation for the difference, which is very clear during the teenage years, goes as far back as early childhood experiences. From their first days in nursery school, girls are not encouraged to work on their own or to complete tasks, although boys are. For example, boys and not girls, are often asked to "help" with repair work. This encouragement leads to a way of learning how to solve problems later on in life. Evidence shows that exceptional mathematicians and scientists did not have teachers who supplied answers; they had to find out for themselves. A further report on math teaching shows that teachers seem to give more attention to boys than to girls. Most teachers who took part in the study admitted that they expect their male students to do better at mathematics and science subjects than their female students. All of this tends to encourage boys to work harder in these subjects, gives them confidence and makes them believe that they can succeed. Interestingly, both boys and girls tend to regard such "male" subjects like mathematics and science as difficult. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience. Between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, the planet was much colder than it is now. During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling. __________, which made sea levels rise. Water froze again during the cold periods. A new study from Switzerland sheds light on where ice sheets melted during the ice age. It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern areas. This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern. Scientists have long assumed that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere (半球) during the 30,000-year-long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea, the ice can easily just slip to the ocean instead of building up. The researchers used a computer model to look at the ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time. The model showed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would be a bigger effect on ocean currents and sea temperatures than what actually happened. Studies suggest that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too. The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists could make, was that the ice melted equally in the North and the South. It is still a mystery as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt 76. What is mainly talked about in the text? Today, millions of American children grow up without fathers. Too often, these children lack the love and help they badly need and which they would ordinarily receive from not one but two parents. In the old days, American parents placed the needs of their children above their own. At present, however, nearly one half of all new marriages end in divorce (离婚), with often troubling results for their children. Worse, every year, thousands of teenage, unmarried Americans become mothers outside marriage, with generally terrible results for the mothers and children alike and for American society more generally. However, Chinese continue to value whole marriages. This is not to say that Chinese marriages are all perfect — they certainly are not, judging from increasing rates of divorce and extramarital affairs — but the willingness of Chinese to set aside their own needs and stay together for the sake of the children is admirable and worthy of study. Families, in whatever form they may take, are important to Americans. If one is to ask a group of Americans what is dearest to them, the majority would say "family". And yet, so many Americans spend much more time at work — that is, beyond the formal forty-hour work week — than they do with their own families. Obviously, the USA is one of the most powerful in the world, owing in large measure to "workaholism" (工作狂). It seems to me that Chinese generally find a better balance between work and family needs than many Americans do. I don't see the number of workaholics in China that I do in the United States (or American organizations in China). Instead, average Chinese usually head home right after work (in the office or field), have meals together, and spend time with their family members. What's more, Chinese try to make more time for grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins than many Americans; in many cases, multigenerational families live together. Of course, like many facts of Chinese society, this is all changing; increasing numbers of "New Chinese" are working longer hours and spending less time with their families than ever before. Still, while Americans do value their loved ones, I think we have something to learn from the Chinese about finding the proper balance _____________. 76. What is the main point of the text? (Please answer within 15 words.) __________________________________________________________________ . 77. Which sentence in the text can be replaced by the following one? Compared with most Americans, I think the Chinese deal with the relationship between families and work better. ___________________________________________________________________ . 78. Please fill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 5 words.) ____________________________________________________________________ . 79. According to the text, what is the American family value in the past? Translate the underlined sentence in the first paragraph into Chinese ______________________________________________________________________ . 76. American parents place the needs of their children above their own. 80. 这些单亲孩子总是缺少他们渴望的关爱和帮助,而这些通常情况下本应该来自于父母两人 而不是其中一个。 8 Beware of those who use the truth to deceive (欺骗). When someone tells you something that is true. but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!" This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he deliberately left out important information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest. Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic (策略). Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, "During Governor Smith's term, the state ____________!" That's true. However, an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs." Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, "Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples." It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation. This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies and sometimes the truth can lie as well. 76. What would be the best title of the text? (Please answer within 10 words.) __________________________________________________________ 77. Which word in the text can be replaced by the following phrase? on purpose ___________________________________________________________ 78. Please fill in the blank in the fourth paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 10 words.) ______________________________________________________________ 79. According to the reports, what is the same tactic used by both candidates and advertisers? It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies and sometimes the truth can lie as well. ___________________________________________________________________ 76. Lying With The Truth 77. deliberately. 78. lost one million jobs 79. Half-truths. 80. 如果有人讲述真相时隐瞒了其中的重要事实,那么他就给人造成了一种假相。

9 It seems that great artists and scientists often ____ __. Both Albert Einstein and Charles Dickens had mental illness. The artist Van Gogh cut off his ear after years of depression. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and geniuses are linked. Dr. Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate of mental illness (50 percent), followed by musicians (38 percent), with lower numbers for painters and architects (17-20 percent). The average rate of mental illness in the population is 6 percent. Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it. Dr. Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of Studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric (精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group. Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is our genes. But this is a problem. As mental illness is harmful, why should its genes survive in at least 6 percent of the population? According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(进化的)has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race. Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to under-stand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all. 1. The Internet is an international collection of computer networks that all understand a standard system of addresses and commands, connected together through backbone (中枢) systems. It was started in 1969, when the U. S. Department of Defense established a nationwide network to connect a handful of universities and contractors. The original idea was to increase computing capacity that could be shared by users in many locations and to find out what it would take for computer networks to survive a nuclear war or other disaster by providing multiple path between users. People on the ARPNET(as this nationwide network was originally called) quickly discovered that they could exchange messages and conduct electronic ―conferences‖ with distant colleagues for purposes that had nothing to do with the military industrial complex. If somebody else had something interesting stored on their computer, it was a simple matter (assuming the owner did not protect it). Over the years, additional networks joined, which added access to more and more computers. The first international connections, to Norway and England, were added in 1973. Today thousands of networks and millions of computers are connected to the Internet. It is growing so quickly that nobody can say exactly how many users ―On the Net‖. The University of Toronto required applicants to earn a NCEE score higher than 600, a level qualified for a Chinese regular university program. Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease. Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory. More important, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart. In the study, researchers from Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attack with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high-density lipoproteins, the so-called good cholesterol, which is known to prevent heart disease.
