Continuous verb forms Grammar

Objectives
revise the structures of the continuous tenses learn some general uses and special uses of cont

inuous verb forms learn the continuous infinitive practise using the continuous tenses

Look at the verbs in bold. Find examples of:
a single form, a continuous form, the future continuous, a continuous passive, a continuous, the present perfect continuous a) Everywhere you go nowadays people seem to be speaking English. b) Many experts are worried because so many languages in the world are disappearing. c) Every city centre seems the same these days. d) Old buildings are being pulled down and replaced by modern new ones. e) Another new shopping mall is coming soon.

二、过去进行时 g) When I was growing up there were no fast food chains in my town. 结构:was/were doing 信号词: at 12 o’clock yesterday

三、将来进行时 i) In thirty years’ time I don’t suppose anyone will be wearing traditional dress any more. 结构:will be doing 信号词: at 12 o’clock tomorrow then (tomorrow)

进行时的使用情境
Section 1 General uses 情境一(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) 1) I hear you are doing a cookery course. 2) We were watching an interesting series about crime. Summary: Describe actions happening over a period of time. e. g. (这段时间)我一直在努力给你打电话(你一直 没接电话)。 I’ve been trying to phone you.

进行时的使用情境
情境二(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) 1) We are staying with my uncle while our house is being decorated. 2) At 12 o’clock, James was still working on his plan. Summary: Describe actions happening temporarily or around a point of time. e. g. --明天八点你能来帮我修电脑吗? --对不起,那时我将正在开会。 --Could you come to help me with my computer at 8 o’clock tomorrow? --Sorry, I will be holding a meeting then.

进行时的使用情境
情境三(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) She was getting more disobedient every day. Summary: refusing to do what someone Describe actions involving change or development. in authority tells you to do e. g. 毫无疑问世界气候在发生改变。 There’s no doubt that the world’s climate is changing.

进行时的使用情境
情境四(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) 1) We were having a very interesting conversation. (before you interrupted) 2) I have been reading Mandela’s autobiography. (but I haven’t finished it.) Summary: Describe incomplete actions. e. g. 当地政府一直花钱建新路。(可能还没有完成) The local government has been spending a lot of money on new roads.

Section 2 Special uses 情境一(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) 1) I am always locking myself out. 2) How can I be expected to work if you are constantly interrupting. Summary: Stress the repetitiveness of the action and often indicates that the speaker finds it surprising, strange or irritating. be + always (constantly, forever, continually) + doing e. g. 我父母(过去总是)不断地批评我。 My parents were continually criticizing me. 完成 Exercise 4 on p.17的相关练习。

Section 2 Special uses 情境二(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) I was wondering if you could recommend a good restaurant. Summary: Use the past continuous tense to make requests more polite and tentative (=not certain).

e. g. 我希望你能帮助我(完成)这个申请表。 I was hoping you might help me with this application form.

Section 2 Special uses 情境三(分析句子,体会具体使用情境) They are opening that supermarket next week. Summary: Use the present continuous tense to describe arrangements for the future. 常用的动词:come, go, leave, finish, arrive, take等。 e. g. 明天我要离开去伦敦。 I am leaving for London tomorrow.

Section 3 备注:1. 不定式的进行式
辨析:1)Wherever you go nowadays, everyone seems to be speaking English. (they are speaking English when you hear them.) 2) Wherever you go nowadays, everyone seems to speak English. (they're generally able to speak English.) Summary: The continuous infinitive can emphasize actions in progress. e. g. 据说他现在正在国外学习。 He is said to be studying abroad now.

Section 3 备注:2. 情态动词与进行时
辨析:1)They might be staying at the Sheraton Hotel. ( present possibility) 2) They might stay at the Sheraton Hotel. ( future possibility)

Summary: With modal verbs, the continuous infinitive can emphasize present possibility. e. g. 多么嘈杂的声音呀!他们一定在开party。 What a terrible noise!They must be having a party. 完成 Exercises 5 & 6 on p.17的相关练习。

Section 3 备注:3. 较少使用进行时的动词
1) Oh dear, this dress doesn’t fit any more. 2) The minister appears puzzled by the accusations against him. 3) I expect he’ll soon be here. Summary: ☆ be动词。 ☆表示所属关系和事物本身特质的词, 如own, possess, have, measure, weigh, fit等。 ☆感官动词, 如appear, see, look, smell, taste等。 ☆表想法,过程的动词,如think, feel, expect等。

They are always like this –a state. 2) Why is everybody being so unhelpful? They are not normally like this.
