This difference may explain why men are more likely to suffer from stress-related disorders. Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men and women have the same "fight-or-flight" reaction to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive behavior, such as verbal or physical conflict ("fight"), or they react by withdrawing from the stressful situation ("flight"). However, the UCLA research team found that men and women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often react to stress in the fight-or-flight response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called "tend and befriend." That is, they often react to stressful conditions by protecting and nurturing their young ("tend"), and by looking for social contact and support from others especially other females ('befriend"). Scientists have long known that in the fight-or-flight reaction to stress, an important role is played by certain hormones released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the female tend-or-befriend response is also based on a hormone. This hormone, called oxytocin, has been studied in the context of childbirth, but now it is being studied for its role in the response of both men and women to stress. The principal investigator, Dr. Shelley E. Taylor, explained that "animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and less anxious." While men also secrete oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones. In terms of everyday behavior, the UCLA study found that women are far more likely than men to seek social contact when they are feeling stressed. They may phone relatives or friends, or ask directions if they are lost. The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came home to their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to enjoy some peace and quietness. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant focusing her attention on her children and their needs. The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower frequency of stress-related disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The tend-and-befriend regulatory system may protect women against stress, and this may explain why women on average live longer than men. 57. The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to . A. turn to friends for help B. solve a conflict calmly C. find an escape from reality D. seek comfort from children 58. Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage? A. Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do. B. Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.
C. Both animals and people have high levels of oxytocin. D. Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men. 59. What can be learned from the passage? A. Male hormones help build up the body's resistance to stress. B. In a family a mother cares more about children than a father does. C. Biological differences lead to different behavioral responses to stress. D. The UCLA study was designed to confirm previous research findings. 60. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. How men and women get over stress B. How men and women suffer from stress C. How researchers overcome stress problems D. How researchers handle stress-related disorders 第六节：信息匹配（共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分，请把答案写到二卷答题卡上指定 A. Gift giving proven to be valuable. B. Memories from gift giving C. Moments and events for gift giving D. Various functions of gift giving E. Gift giving as a wasteful practice F. Gift giving as a two-way social activity Gift Giving 61. __________ There are many occasions for giving gifts in modern industrialized societies: birthdays, naming ceremonies, weddings, anniversaries, New Year, It is common to give gifts on many of these celebrations in western cultures. In addition, special events, such as one’ s first day of school or graduation from university, often require gift fiving. 62. __________ What is happening when we give gifts? Most important, we are exchanging gifts. If someone gives me a gift for my birthday, I know that I am usually expected to give one on his or her next birthday. A gift builds up or confirms a social obligation. 63. ___________源:学科网 ZXXK] Gifts tighten personal relationships and provide a means of communication between loved ones. People say that a gift lets the recipient know we are thinking of them, and that we want to make the person “feel special.”We want people to feel wanted, to feel part of our social or family group. We give presents to say “I’m sorry.”Sometimes it is difficult for us to find a present that someone will like. Sometimes we give things that we like or would feel comfortable with. In all these cases, the gifts are sending out messages－often very expressive ones. 64. ___________ People tend to talk about presents in a fairly loving way. A woman whose mother had died years ago described the many gifts around her house. These were gifts that her mother had given her over the years: “I appreciate these, and they mean something to me,” the woman said, “because I remember the occasions they were given on, and that they were from my mother, and the relationship we’ve had.” The gifts remain and keep the relationship alive in mind. This woman felt the same way about the gifts
she gave to others. She hoped that the recipients would look at here gifts in years to come and remember her. 65. ___________ Emotions like these suggest that a positive spirit still lies behind gift giving. They prove that the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss was wrong to say that modern western gift giving is highly wasteful. Studies in Canada and elsewhere have also shown that this is not the case. Each gift is unique even if so many are given. The emotional benefit for those who exchange gifts is the very reason for the tradition to continue. 第二部分 书面表达(满分 35 分) 第一节：单词拼写（共 10 小题，每小题 1 分，满分 10 分） 66．Our troops __________(攻击) the enemy under the cover of darkness. 67. Many students think highly of it while others hold the opposite opnion. Is lunch
reading well worth our time? This question really deserves our consideration. As far as I am concerned, ervery coin has two sides. So does Lunch Reading. On the one hand, Lunch Reading is a complementary study to Morning Reading which, undoubtedly, does good to language study.. Besides, it is interesting to read extra materials which can not only enlarge our vocabulary but also widen our knowledge. Moreover, by reading aloud, our brains become more alert so that we won’t get sleepy in the coming class. On the other hand, in order to take part in lunch reading, we are requested to arrive at school ten minutes earlier which we can use to have a rest instead. Therefore, it is a delemma to make such a choice. However, weighing the advantages and disadvantages of lunch reading, we can natually arrive at the conclusion that this activity is beneficial and rewarding for our study.
