A The practice of magic includes special words, actions, and objects. Most magic involves a person called a magician, who claims to have supernatural powers. Magic words. To work most magic, the magician sings or speaks special words in a certain order. These words are called incantations or spells. Some spells form prayers to demons(魔鬼), spirits, or other supernatural forces. Many societies believe the magic will not work unless the magician recites the spells perfectly. Other magic words have no meaning, though they supposedly possess power when spoken by a magician. Magic actions accompany the words spoken in performing much magic. Many of these movements act out the desired effect of the magic. For example, a magician trying to make rain fall may sprinkle(洒) water on the ground. The magician's combined words and actions form a ceremony. Magic objects include certain plants, stones, and other things with supposed supernatural powers. Any such object may be called a fetish(物神). But this term often refers to an object—for example, a carving or a dried snake—honored by a tribe for its magic powers. Many tribes believe fetishes have magic power because spirits live in these objects. Many people carry magic objects called amulets(护身符)to protect themselves from harm. Many amulets are stones or rings engraved(雕刻) with magic symbols. The magician. In some societies, nearly everyone knows how to work some magic. In other societies, only experts practice magic. Every culture has a recognized point when a child becomes an adult, when rules must be followed and tests passed. In China, although teenagers can get their ID cards at 16, many only see themselves as an adult when they are 18. In the US, where everyone drives, the main step to the freedom of adult life is learning to drive. At 16, American teens take their driving test. When they have their license, they drive into the grownup world. “Nobody wants to ride the cheese bus to school，” said Eleanor Fulham, 17. She brought the pressure back to memory, especially for kids from wealthier families. “It's like you're not cool if you don't have a car，” she said. According to recent research, 41% of 16 to 19yearolds in the US own cars, up from 23% in 1985. Although, most of these cars are bought by parents, some teens get parttime jobs to help pay. Not all families can afford cars for their children. In cities with subways and limited parking, some teenagers don't want them. But in rich suburban areas without subways, and where bicycles are more for fun than transportation, it is strange for a teenager not to have a car. But police say 16yearolds have almost three times more accidents than 18 to 19yearolds. This has made many parents pause before letting their kids drive. Julie Sussman, of Virginia, decided that her son Chad, 15, will wait until he is 17 to apply for his learner's permit. Chad said he has accepted his parents' decision, although it has caused some teasing from his friends. “They say that I am unlucky，” he said, “But I'd rather be alive than driving, and I_don't_really_trust_my_friends_on_the_road,_either.” In China as more families get cars, more 18yearolds learn to drive. Will this become a big step to becoming an adult? 41．Which may serve as the best title of the article? A．Cars Helping You to GrowUp B．Driving into the GrownUp World C．Teenagers' Driving in America D．Recognized Point of Becoming an Adult 42．16yearold drivers have more accidents possibly because________. A．they want to show themselves off B．they are never experienced drivers C．older people always drive better D．they never drive carefully on the road 43．Which may NOT be taken into consideration when deciding whether to buy a car? A．How well off the family is. B．Whether the kid is old enough. C．What traffic condition there is around. D．Whether it's practically needed. 44．When Chad said “I don't really trust my friends…”， he meant that________. A．he might run into his friends if he drove B．he didn't agree with his friends C．he might not be safe if his friends drove D．he was afraid that his friends might well lie to him 45．The passage mainly gives information about ________. A．an American culture B．a cultural difference between America and China C．a change in the Chinese culture D．the relationship between driving and a person's development C I'm usually fairly skeptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck
by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago. Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation(隔离) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place. Considering that we_can't_turn_the_clock_back,_adults can still do plenty to help the next generation. At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for facetoface relationships, and they will get more sleep. Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news. Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale. Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life. 46．According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago ________. A．probably suffered less from anxiety B．were considered less individualistic C．were less isolated physically D．were probably less selfcentered 47．What does the author mean by saying “we can't turn the clock back” in the third paragraph? A．It's impossible to forget the past. B．The social reality children are facing cannot be forgotten. C．It's impossible to slow down the pace of change. D．Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten. 48．The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people's state of mind are ________. A．illogical B．confusing C．surprising D．questionable 49．Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A．To children, anxiety is completely avoidable. B．TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world. C．Exercise does not help to lessen children's anxiety. D．Sometimes local news about crime and murder also affects children a little. 50．The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is________. A．to lower their expectations for them B．to set a good model for them to follow C．to get them more involved socially D．to improve them with a safer environment D Japanese high school students either walk or ride bicycles if the distance is not too great. In other cases, students must take public buses and trains. After junior high school, students attend schools based on their high school entrance examination scores. So some students travel a great distance to attend the school. ◆ ________ The school day begins at 8：30. Then students assemble in their homeroom classes for the
day's studies. Each homeroom has an average of 40—45 students. Students stay in their homeroom classrooms for most of the school day. Only for physical education, laboratory classes, or other subjects requiring special facilities(设备) do students move to different parts of the school. Between classes and at lunchtime, classrooms can be noisy, lively places. Some schools may have a cafeteria(自助餐厅), but most do not. In most schools, students bring a box lunch from home, prepared by the mother in the early morning hours. Japanese students spend 240 days a year at school, 60 days more than American students. Students in high schools take three years' each of the following subjects mathematics, social studies, Japanese, science, and English. Other subjects include physical education, music, art, and moral(道德的) studies. All the students in one grade level study the same subjects. Given the number of required subjects, electives(选修科目) are few. ◆ Afterschool Activities Club activities take place after school every day. Students can join only one club, and they rarely change clubs from year to year, so the clubs are relatively stable. Clubs are made up of sports clubs(baseball, soccer, judo, kendo, etc.) and culture clubs(English, broadcasting, science, etc.). New students usually are encouraged to select a club shortly after the school year begins in April. Clubs meet for two hours after school each day and many clubs continue to meet during school vacations. 51．Most Japanese high school students often have their lunch________. A．in restaurants B．in school cafeterias C．at home D．in homeroom classrooms 52．Students in the USA go to school________days a year. A．180 B．200 C．240 D．300 53．The underlined word “rarely” in the fourth paragraph means “________”． A．always B．never C．seldom D．often 54.From the passage we know that________. A．there are less than 40 students in each class in Japanese high schools B．students must stay in homeroom classrooms for physical education C．there are few subjects for students to choose except the required ones D．there will not be any club activities during school vacations 55．The best subtitle for the second and third paragraphs may be “________”． A．At school B．In class C．Subjects D．Homerooms It?s a fine line parents walk as they try to guide their kids into adulthood. You want to protect but not treat too kindly, advise but not control and let them live their own lives—with some input, of course. If your child asks you to tie a particular hardtotie knot(绳结)for a project she is working on，just tie the knot. Don?t start helping with the rest of the project or making suggestions on how to do it. She wants to do it herself, in her own way. Before offering help or advice which your child has not asked for, count to ten. Perhaps in those seconds you?ll decide that the advice would do no good，or isn?t really that important，and you?ll drop it. If the advice still seems important, you will give it，but the pause may lead you to give it in a more thoughtful way. Remember that your child is not you and is not a reflection of you. We make a serious mistake if we try to shape our children into copies of ourselves, or if we think of them as extensions or reflections of ourselves. We need to help them to be them, not try to turn them into us or into something that we think will make us look good. Our primary responsibility to our children is not that of telling them momenttomoment or daytoday how to behave but providing them with a healthy environment in which to develop. For example, one of the best ways you can help your kids is to work with your community to create safeenough outdoor places to play in your neighborhood.

charge sb.some money to do sth/ for sth.“为(做)某事向某人要价”。 5. give away“赠送，泄露”；give off“发出，放出”；send out“发 送，发出”；throw away“扔掉，浪费”。 7. B 8.C as long as 只要。 where 引导宾语从句，在句中相当于 the place where。 15. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you'll
learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese. Try and write to me in Chinese next time. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon. Who is the passage mainly written for? A. Teenagers. B. Teachers. C. Young parents. D. Adults. C If women are mercilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend large sum of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing their old-fashioned dresses. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on. No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society.
Fashion designers are rarely connected with necessary things like warmth, comfort and durability They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn?t at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes. When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women?s clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability（稳定耐用）? That is for you to decide. 54. Designers and big stores always make money _________. A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions C. by constantly changing the fashions in women?s clothes D. because they attach great importance to quality in women?s clothing 55. To the writer, the fact that women change their old-fashioned dresses is seen as __________. A. a waste of money B. a waste of time C. an expression of taste D. an expression of love beauty 56. New fashions in clothing are created for ________. A. the commercial exploitation of women B. the women?s strength?s of character C. basic qualities of inconstancy and instability D. an important contribution to society 57. By saying “the conclusions to be drawn are obvious” (Line 1 to line 2, Para. 4), the writer means that _________. A. women?s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at B. women are better able to put up with discomfort C. men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers D. men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion D WENZHOU（Xinhua）—— “The train collision in east China?s Zhejiang Province has killed 39 people and left 192 others injured on Sunday night,” said a spokesman with the Ministry of Railways. “A total of 132 people are still being treated in hospital,” said Wang Yongping, spokesman with the ministry at a press conference. “Eleven people remain in critical condition,” said Chen Jianguo, head of the Health Bureau in the city of Wenzhou, where the collision happened on Saturday night. Chen said at the press conference that 52 people who suffered slight injuries had been discharged from hospital. Wang expressed condolences （哀悼） to the concerning families and sincere apology to all the passengers. “The train?s ?black box? has been discovered and the ministry is investigating the cause of crash,” Wang said. He said the ministry will make public the cause of the accident as soon as the investigation is done and public the names of the killed and injured. Wang said the crash has caused large number of casualties and great property losses（人员 和财产损失）. The ministry will find out the cause through thorough investigation and take effective measures to prevent similar accidents. Despite the accident, the spokesman said the ministry is confident in the high-speed train.
“China?s high-speed train is advanced and qualified. We have confidence in it,” he said. “The damaged rails have been repaired and were ready to restart operation but the reopening was delayed by the stormy weather,” according to Wang. Wang did not provide the exact time when the line would start operat ing again. The accident occurred at about 8:30 p. m. Saturday on a bridge near Wenzhou when bullet train D301 rear-ended（追尾） D3115, which reportedly lost power after lightning strike. 58. Which of the following is NOT true? A. The Railway Ministry is investigating the cause with the help of the “black box”. B. Bullet train D301 hit the train D3115 that stopped ahead of it due to lack of power. C. Bullet train D3115 was forced to stop as a result of human interference. D. The operation of the line would be restarted with the stormy weather over. 59. What can be the best title of the passage? This passage is most likely to be taken from __________. A. a science fiction B. an essay C. a travel brochure D. a newspaper A. The secret of the writer?s success B. A writer with enduring popularity C. Well-received creation to encourage Brits D. The insight into human nature E. Writing styles in different stages F. The story appreciates for school students 61. ______________ __ Charles Dickens is often thought of as one of England?s great writers. Yet for many his language is old-fashioned and his story plots are of ten improbable. Why, Dickens, out of so many other great English writers, has made the list? How then to explain Dickens?s enduring popularity? 62. ________________ One reason undoubtedly is the British government?s insistence that every child studies a Dickens? novel at school. Alongside William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens is a compulsory （必读 的）writer on every English literature school reading list. His stories, though often over-long by today?s standard, are superbly written moral tales. They are filled with colorful characters. 63. ________________ But what makes his books stand out from other English writers is his insight into human nature. Dickens, like Shakespeare, tells us truths about human behavior that are as true to citizens of the 21st century as they were to his readers in the 19th century. Readers have returned to Dickens?s books again and again over the years to see what he has to say about readers? own time. 64. ________________ The BBC adapted one of his less well-known novels, Little Dorrit, into a popular television drama that introduced many Brits to the novel for the first time. A dark story about greed and
money, it was the perfect story to illustrate the bad times. No surprise then that it was Dickens Britons turned to, during the economic crisis last year, to make sense of world rapidly falling apart. 65. ________________ Readers of the 19th and early 20th century usually prized Dickens?s earlier novels for their humor and pathos （悲痛） . While recognizing the virtues of these books, critics today tend to rank more highly the later works because of their formal coherence and acute perception （洞察力） of the human condition. For as long as Dickens?s novels have something to say to modern audience, it seems likely that he will remain one of Britain?s best loved writers. 66. There is no doubt that to leaning Chinese well is by no means an easy thing, but I have some ideas that may help. Firstly, it is important to listen to the teacher carefully and take notes so that you can go over your lessons later. Secondly, try to practice speaking Chinese as much as possible out of class and write whatever you hear down to accumulate more words and expressions. Don?t be afraid of making mistakes. And try to communicate with local people to develop listening skills. Last but not least, you should organize your time well and do a lot of exercise. I think the most important thing is that you should believe in yourself. I?m sure that you will succeed after your hard work.
