Introduction
This technical tip explains the combination of VRRP with priority tracking. VRRP is based upon RFC 2338. While there are many whitepapers that discuss VRRP, this document will focus upon priority tracking.

Description
VRRP without Tracking (one link down)
The first example shows what happens when VRRP tracking is not enabled. 1. Client 172.21.23.34 pings client 10.10.10.103. 2. Client 172.21.23.34 sends ICMP packets to its default gateway, 172.21.1.1. 3. The default gateway, 172.21.1.1, is a VIR that exists on both switches. 4. A1 processes the ICMP request because it is Master for 172.21.1.1. 5. Since the link between A1 and the hub on the 10.10.10.x subnet is down, A1 does not have a path to the host and must return a “destination host unreachable” back to the client.

The second example shows what happens when VRRP tracking is enabled and a link fails. As soon as the link is pulled, A1s priority drops from 105 to 103. A2s priority stays at 104 and becomes Master for VIR 1 and VIR 3. A1 VIR 1, priority 101 1 Ifs x 2 = 2 101 + 2 = 103 priority A2 VIR 1, priority 100 2 Ifs x 2 = 4 100 + 4 = 104 priority NOTE: A2 is Master for VIR 1 because it has a priority of 104 versus A1 with a priority of 103 (1 IP interfaces with a default increment of 2)

1. Client 172.21.23.34 pings client 10.10.10.103. 2. Client 172.21.23.34 sends ICMP packets to its default gateway, 172.21.1.1. 3. The default gateway, 172.21.1.1, is a VIR that exists on both switches. 4. A2 processes the ICMP request because it is Master for 172.21.1.1. 5. The ping is forwarded from A2 to the client, 10.10.10.101. 6. The client 10.10.10.101 responds to the source IP address of the ICMP, 172.21.23.34. Since the source IP is on a different subnet, the client sends the ICMP response to its default gateway, 10.10.10.1. 7. A2 will process the ICMP response since it is the Master VIR for 10.10.10.1. 8. A2 forwards the request to the client, 172.21.23.34. 9. The ping is successful.

VRRP configuration can be confirmed by issuing the following command: /info/vrrp/dump

Below is the output from switch A1: VRRP information: 1: vrid 2: vrid 1, 172.16.1.1, 2, 10.10.10.1, if 1, renter, prio 103, backup if 2, renter, prio 101, init

Below is the output from switch A2: VRRP information: 1: vrid 2: vrid 1, 172.16.1.1, 2, 10.10.10.1, if 1, renter, prio 104, master if 2, renter, prio 104, master

Conclusion
VRRP with tracking is a very important key to a properly designed network. If the environment includes SLB, the tracking criteria may include: l4pts or reals.
