A The oldest ston
e buildings in the world are the pyramids (金字塔). They have stood for nearly 5, 000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered (散布) along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid. Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or，more often, for stones to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramids in good condition，and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last forever. The “Step” pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun sets. This was for spiritual reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to crack (破裂) under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital，or better still near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body. 21．According to the passage，the “Step” pyramid________. When I take English exams, I can't finish reading the English passages within the given time, but my classmates can. How can I improve my reading speed? Thanks !
Rejoy Hello, my friend， Increasing your speed in reading has both good and bad parts. You can increase your reading speed, but your understanding and comprehension may go down. So you have to be careful to increase your speed in reading. You should make sure you are understanding everything you read, or it won't be beneficial to increasing your reading. As with every good thing, it takes time. The best way to increase reading speed is to practice. Just like anything else we do over and over again, we will get better at it. So practice reading, practice concentrating on what you are reading so that you don't have to go back and read the same paragraph over again (that really slows down your reading speed). And slowly you will begin to read faster and faster. Imagine that you are running a foot race. Will you run very fast the first time and win? Of course not. None of us would expect that we would. If I were to ask you what is your recommendation to me for learning to read Chinese, what would you tell me? What if I told you that I wanted to learn to speak, write and read Chinese by next week? You would think that I am crazy. Do you agree? So practice reading slowly at first and then read again and again. You will read fast. Have a great day and don't run faster than you have the strength to run. Bye. 25．To avoid reading the same sentence again, we should________. A．stay focused C．read fast B．stay calm D．read slowly
由“practice concentrating on what you are reading so that you don't have to go back and read the same paragraph over again.” 26．What is the most important thing when we read according to Dave? A．Speed. C．Comprehension. 答案： C B．Vocabulary. D．Culture background.
You should make sure you are
understanding everything you read，or it won't be beneficial to increasing your reading.(你应该确保 理解所阅读的内容．否则提高阅读速度是无益的) 27．Which of the following sayings best shows Dave's advice？ A.Failure is the mother of success.
B．A good beginning is half done. C．Practice makes perfect. D．Do as the Romans do. 从回信的第二段开始，Dave 就在围绕“The best way to increase reading speed is to practice”这一主题思想展开陈述，因此可知 C 项为最佳答案。 C With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That's a move similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”． Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A & M's College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future. It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years. This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal. The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete. “The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem，” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it's difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort， ” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A& M, the first－ever attempt at cloning a dog. “They are trying to do something that's never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah's Ark. We're both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there's a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It's a research that is very much needed.” 28．The aim of “Noah's Ark” project is to ________. A．make efforts to clone the endangered pandas B．save endangered animals from dying out C．collect DNA of endangered animals to study D．transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
29．According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of ________. A．available panda eggs B．host animals C．qualified researchers D．enough money 答案： A 细节理解题。 从第六段第一句话“The nuclear transfer(核子移植)of one species to another is not easy，and the lack of available(capable of being used)panda eggs could be a major problem”可知。 30．The best title for the passage may be________. A．China's Success in Pandas Cloning B．The First Cloned Panda in the World C．Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas D．China—the Native Place of Pandas Forever 答案：C 主旨大意题。 31．From the passage we know that________. A．Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog B．scientists try to implant a panda's egg into a rabbit C．Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches D．about two thousand of species will probably die out in a century 答案：D 推理判断题。 D Once there was a young woman who didn't like her job. Every day when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job，” her husband told her. “Oh, I will，” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job，” her grandchildren told her. “Oh, I will，” she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can' t just yet.”
I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on the porch of a general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way？” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh，” answered the man. “He' s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn' t he move？” “Because it's not hurting him bad enough.” That' s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we' re wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our self－esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams. Wilbur Wright once commented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning. I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldn't wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at work know that kind of passion, too.” They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. And when things don't change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack their self－esteem, passion or dreams. 32．The woman complained to her husband every day because________. A．she didn' t have enough money to support her family B．her boss criticized her for what she had done C．she was not satisfied with her job at all D．her work was difficult and her boss was cruel 答案： C 细节理解题。 根据第一段中的“Every day when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss.” 33．From the first and second paragraphs we can know that the woman________. A．liked making friends with others B．loved all her children very much C．left her tiring job at last D．did exactly the same job all along 答案： D 推理判断题。
decades... There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can't just yet.” 34．The author mentioned an old dog in order to tell us that ________. A．it was deeply hurt by its owner B．the woman is like the dog on the nail C．it is tied firmly to a nail by its owner D．it should be injured badly enough 答案：B 推理判断题。
35．The underlined word“Prolonged”(in Paragraph 4) means“________”． A．lasting C．serious B．slight D．hard
Expressions about water are almost as common as water. __36__ The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. C．A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police. D．It means disliking an idea. E．it is strong and does not have any holes.
