Because her parents thought boys and girls should be equal, Elizabeth received the same education as her brothers. In 1832, her father’s business was destroyed by fire, so her family moved to New York City. But her father’s business there failed. Then in 1837, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Not long after, her father died. After her father’s death, Elizabeth, at the age of 16, had to go to work. When she was 24, she visited her dying friend Mary. Dear Students, I am delighted to be your guest. I would like to tell you about myself. I have been a news reporter for the past fifteen years. I
chose this job so I could travel the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen famines, wars, earthquakes, poverty and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness. In India, I visited a city where there were many homeless children. Some were as young as four years old. They lived in the streets and survived by begging or stealing. But then a wonderful lady called Rosa opened a home for them. Within one year, she was looking after two hundred children. She clothed them, fed them, and taught them. She gave them hope. Another time, I was in Turkey after a terrible earthquake, in one place. I found an old lady whose house was in ruins, her son was missing and rescue workers said there was no chance that he was still alive. But the old lady did not give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones one at a time by herself. She did not stop until she found her son. He was alive. Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious condition. He had undergone twenty operations and spent nearly his whole life in hospital. I thought he would be sad, but when I met him, his smile was so warm and welcoming. In life, we need role models that we can admire and learn from. When my life is difficult, I try to remember the courage and goodness of these three people. 47. The speaker is giving a speech to students in ________. A. India B. Canada C. Turkey D. China 48. The underlined word “ famine ” in Paragraph 2 means ________. She’s a good teacher and she teaches the homeless children. 50. For what does the speaker admire the Turkish woman and the Chinese boy? A. Their bravery. B. Their luck. C. Their age. D. Their strong mind. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分，共 10 分） 根据短文内容，从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 How to Stay Motivated in High School Do you find it difficult, almost impossible to stay motivated about high school? There are so many demands on your time, along with the expectation of parents and teachers. You really want to look at all the “big picture”. Your time in high school is likely to be just a small part of your whole life. 51 Set realistic goals and rewards. It can be as simple as doing your work and then taking a break to do something you like. 52 It isn’t as though you have to do all of your work at one time. In other words, when you reach a good break point, give yourself some kind of reward such as doing something you enjoy and afterwards get back to work. 53 Consider your own parents, teacher, neighbor, or relative—anyone you respect and trust that can be in your corner to root for you and cheer you on. You want someone who has some life experience to counsel you. If you can find more than one source of such wisdom, it is all the better. Don’t ignore this suggestion. It can really save you a lot of heartbreak and suffering later on. Have supportive friends. There are people who are going nowhere fast. 54 Instead, stay around other motivated students who enjoy school, study and work hard because they are so positive. That positive influence will help motivate you.
Work with yourself not against. We all have energy levels. 55 If your levels are low, determine what raises your energy levels to get you going. Then get as much done as you can. Also, don’t wait until later to get started doing things like your homework. One student explained that he would start work at the end of the class. Then when he got home, he was finishing the work rather than just starting the work. A. Then get back to work. B. Don’t hang out with them. C. Seek the wisdom of an elder. D. Try to go with the flow of your levels. E. But it can be the most meaningful years. F. Study hard, have fun and enjoy each year. G. Find classmates with whom you can share your concerns.

Dear Josh, Now, I’m busy studying for the College Entrance Examination in June and I’m confident of being admitted by an ideal university. As this summer holiday is long, I have some plans. College life must be plentiful but reading is the most important thing. So I’d like to read. Reading can help me get a good habit when I become a freshman. Once I get into the college, I must do something for myself, including washing and cleaning the room. So I’ll help my parents do some housework during the holiday. However, reading and housework don’t mean all of my holiday. I need contact with my friends and communicate with them. As we all know, true friendship is worth more than money. I hope that you’ll come to China for a visit. My hometown is a beautiful place with a long history, which attracts a large number of visitors. Welcome to come here to experience traditional Chinese culture. Yours, Li Hua
