Our Body and Healthy Habits Period One

Teaching content:
Introduction; Speaking1; Speaking2 & Everyday English

Teaching important points:
1.Encourage the students to talk about healthy habits; 2.Train the students` speaking ability; 3.Teach the students some new words; 4.Learn some daily expressions about healthy habits.

Teaching difficult points:
1.Lead the students to talk in class actively; 2.Help the students to sum up the symptoms of some diseases.

Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in and Introduction 1.Lead-in Write some proverbs about health on the blackboard and ask the students to understand their meanings. 1)A close mouth catches no flies. 病从口入。 2)Health is over wealth. 健康胜于财富。 3)Health is not valued till sickness comes. 有病方知无病福。 2.Activity1 on P1. 3.Activity2 on P1. Just read through the sentences to understand and tick their own answers.Then ask some students to read out the sentences one by one and explain some language points.Last read through again to understand it better. 4.Activity3 on P1. Read through the sentences to understand.Then ask some students to read out the sentences one by one and explain some language points.Last read through again to understand it better. 1)You are what you eat. 人如其食 Your body and even mental state is affected by the type of food you eat. 2)A healthy mind is in a healthy body. 健康的思想寓于健康的身体之中 If you are clear about eating healthily and follow a sensible diet, you are likely to be clear thinking in other areas of life. 3)Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. 早睡早起的人享有健康、财富和智慧 Sleeping late or sleeping in the morning are not good for the body, the mind or for business. 4)An apple a day keeps the doctor away. 每天吃苹果,不必上诊所 5.Activity4 on P1. Ask the students to think of some Chinese proverbs about health and try to understand and remember them in English.The following are some examples: 饭后百步走,延年又益寿。 After dinner sit a while; after supper walk a mile. 冬吃萝卜夏吃姜,不用医生开药方。 Carrots in winter and gingers in summer keep the doctor away. 冬天动一动,少闹一场病。 Exercise in winter makes a man healthier. 不吸烟,不饮酒,病魔见了绕道走。 No smoking and none alcoholic keeps the doctor away. *Step 2 Speaking1 【*For our students this part can be omitted.】

Ask the students to decide on the five most important things that they should or shouldn`t do in order to stay healthy, then put them in order of importance. How to stay healthy Things you should do Things you should not do

*Step 3 Speaking2 【*For our students this part can be omitted.】 If possible,ask the students to make a dialogue in pairs after the example.Then ask some pairs to present their dialogues in class. Step 4 Everyday English Ask the students to read through the given information silently and individually to choose the answers.Then check the answers and explain some language points.Last ask them to read through again to understand better.

Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Greetings and Revision 1.Greet the students as usual. 2.Check up the homework in last period OR ask some students to read out the new words in this period. Step 2 Vocabulary Today we are going to learn an interesting article. The main character is Zhou Kai, who is a student in senior high school. Let’s see how healthy he is. Before reading the passage, let’s study some new words. Finish Activity1 on P2.(Read through and answer; check and explain; read aloud together) Suggested answers: (1)sweets (2) break(an arm), fever, injure, injury, pain, painful (3) normal (4) captain (5) anxious Step 3 Reading 1.Fast reading 1)Ask the students to read through the first passage silently and quickly and try to answer the questions in Activity2 on P2.(The answers need to be summarized.) Suggested Answers: ① Because he is going out to play football in the rain. ② She thinks he will catch a bad cold. ③ She asks him to at least wear a jacket. 2)Ask the students to read through the second passage silently and quickly and try to answer the questions in Activity3 on P2.(The answers need to be summarized.) Suggested Answers: ① They are connected because they both talk about the way Zhou Kai’s mother looks after him, and because they both mention the time he got ill through playing football in the rain. (Zhou Kai`s life) ② Various answers are acceptable. One possible answer is: Yes, Zhou Kai has a healthy lifestyle because his mother give him lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. He eat fish, not fatty meat or sugar and sweets. He also exercises regularly, playing a lot of football. 2.Language points(Ref: Notes to the text) 3.Careful reading Ask the students to read through the two passages again silently and carefully and try to answer the questions in Activity4 on P3. 1.When Zhou Kai’s mother saw him heading towards the front door without a jacket on, she eyed him anxiously. 妈妈看到周凯没穿夹克就向前门走去,担心地盯着他。 1)head v. head towards/ for? 朝?而去; 前往? eg:She is heading towards home. 【*拓展】该词组还有比喻义,即“将会碰到; 遭到” eg :① Are you heading for great difficulties? ② The world is heading for many problems. 2)eye n. 眼睛 vt. 盯着看,注视 eg:He eyed me painfully. 2.?said Zhou Kai, as he opened the door.(as 引导时间状语从句, “一边?一边,当?的时候”) Zhou Kai went and did as he was told.(as 引导方式状语从句, “按?的方式”) So as you can see from what I`ve said,I`m a normal kind of person. (as 引导非限制性定语从句,代 指整个主句的内容, “正如?那样” ) ?as I`ve said, this isn`t a problem because my mother feeds us so well. eg:As is known to everyone, the moon travels round the earth once every month. She always sings as she cooks. Do in Rome as the Romans do. 3.But that`s because I was stupid enough to play football in the rain.但那是因为我真够蠢的,居然在雨 中踢足球。 That`s beacuse? (because 引导表语从句“那是因为?”) eg:He missed the school bus.That`s because he got up late. 一个词由一种词类转到另一种词类而不发生词形的变化,称为转化(conversion). 常用的转化为动词的名词有:
head, eye, name, book, hand, dress, diet, mail, ship, face, work, answer, use, etc.

有些动词也可转化为名词:
love, laugh, walk, answer, work, change, help, look, feel, wash, stop, increase, etc.

名词和动词在转化时,有时不改变意思,有时意思会改变,如: eye n 眼睛 v (用眼睛看)注释,端详 ship n 船 v 用船来装 help v 帮助 n 帮助 love v 爱 n 爱

Suggested answer: ① houses ② fingered ③ tastes ④ hand Step 3 Grammar2-Will/be going to for future actions 1.Review The Future Simple Tense(Grammar1 on P107). 【*will/be going to 的用法区别】 1)单纯谈到将来的事情,没有主观因素,可用 will。 eg:① It will become warm when spring comes. ② The train will leave at 8 this morning. 2)表示说话人的揣测,用 will。 eg:① She will be all right after taking the medicine. ② That will be Dr Wang`s clinic. Let`s go and have a look. 3)表示一种倾向,用 will。 eg:① Each time he comes to Beijing, he will visit the Great Wall. ② Without air, man will die. 4)表示说话时决定马上要做的动作(多半是听了对方的话语后所作的反应) ,用 will。 eg:① Here’s the door bell. I’ll open the door. ② Can you lie down please, and I’ll examine you ? 5)will 可用于表示意愿、拒绝等的条件状语从句。 eg:① No,we are not going to quarrel at all if you`ll only let me talk. ② If you would stand by me I should have another try. 6)表示经过事先考虑或安排后的意愿,用 be going to。 eg:My best friend is in hospital, but he is going to come out tomorrow. 7)在口语中,表示将要发生的事情时,多用 be going to。 eg:① What’s going to happen?

② Is there going to be a party tomorrow evening? 8)be going to 可用于表示将来时间的条件状语从句,will 却不能。 eg:① If he is going to participate in the competition, he’d better get prepared. ② If we are going to start early, 5 o’clock is ok. 结论:be going to 表示以前早就决定要做的事,往往译成“打算或准备做某事” ;而 will 仅表示将要发 生的动作或说话时才决定要做的事。

Suggested answers: Canada`s health care system is the best of the three,I think,because it is completely and really free. 3.Consolidation Explain some language points(Ref: Notes to the text); read through again to understand it better. Step 4 Task-Preparing a survey about healthy living 【*This part can be omitted for our students.】 Step 5 Module File This section lists the main areas of language dealt with in this module. The teacher may give the students about 5 minutes to go through it,ticking the things they are confident that they know, putting a question mark next to those things they are not sure of, and a cross next to those they don`t know.Then they may make up for it accordingly.Or you may provide a chance for them to have a consolidation. Step 6 Writing Task Activity2 on P9 Give the students some instructions or clues to help.The passage should be limited in 100-120 words,so the students don`t need to write too many details.The students can follow the 4 clues in this part.
