Chen Zijiang is a paper-cutting expert whom I interviewed for my article on Chinese Art. Paper-cutting is something that he learned to do from an early age. ―It is a Chinese folk art with a long history,‖ Mr Chen told me, ―Paper cuts of animals have been found in tombs which date back to the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasty!‖ He added that by the Southern Song Dynasty, paper-cutting had become an important part of everyday life. ―A young farmer who wanted a wife would look at a young woman’s paper-cutting skills before marrying her!‖ explained Mr Chen, laughing at the look of surprise on my face. Mr Chen went on to explain that there are three types of paper cuts which people still make today: paper cuts for decoration, for religious purposes and for design patterns. Paper cuts used for decoration are often seen on windows and gates. They are usually put up during holidays to bring good luck. They are also used on presents. A present for parents whose child has recently been born might show a paper cut of children, for example. Paper cuts which show the Chinese character for double happiness are often used to celebrate weddings. Paper cuts used for religious purposes are often found in temples. They are also used as offerings on special days and during festivals. The third kind of paper cuts are those used to make patterns on clothing. They are also sometimes used to decorate jewellery boxes. Dragons are very popular patterns for these designs. The interview was very useful as I got a lot of interesting information for my article. I was also ready to try our paper-cutting for myself. ―See you next week,‖ I said as I waved goodbye to Mr Chen. I was going to meet him again so that he could help me make my first paper cut!

Jesse‘s uncle jumped into the sea and dragged the boy to shore. The boy was not breathing. His aunt gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation(人工呼吸) while his uncle rang the emergency services. Pretty soon, a helicopter arrived and flew the boy to hospital. It was a much quicker journey than the journey by road. Jesse‘s uncle, Vance Folsenzier, ran back into the sea and found the shark that had attacked his nephew. He picked the shark up and threw it onto the beach. A coastguard shot the fish four times and although this did not kill it, the shark‘s jaws relaxed so that they could open them, and reach down into its stomach, and pull out the boys‘ arm. At the Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Dr Ian Rogers spent eleven hours reattaching Jesse‘s arm. ―It was a complicated operation,‖ he said, ―but we were lucky. If the arm hadn‘t been recovered in time, we wouldn‘t have been able to do the operation at all. What I mean is that if they hadn‘t found the shark, we wouldn‘t have had a chance.‖ According to local park ranger Jack Tomosvic, shark attacks are not that common. ―Jesse was just unlucky,‖ he says, ―evening is the shark‘s feeding time. And Jesse was in an area without lifeguards. This would never have happened if he had been in an area where swimming is allowed.‖ When reporters asked Jesse‘s uncle how he had had the courage to fight a shark, he replied, ―I was mad and you do some strange things when you‘re mad.‖ 26. At the age of four I started speech lessons because basically I could not speak well enough for anyone to understand me. The story goes downhill from here. The first grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but also felt nervous about the fact that I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn‘t do it. The second grade was not much better. I still struggled with the inability to read. It was in the third grade that the school district built a new school close to my home. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could move to the new one. However, things were still not much better as far as my schooling was concerned and did not get better for the next two years. It was in the fifth grade. Mrs. Wakefield was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel defeated. On the contrary, she did her best to let me know that I could be whatever I wanted to be. And that is just what I did. For the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wakefield‘s influence on my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome any difficulty and become someone. I have won numerous awards up to now, such as Teacher of the Year. I owe it all to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be. 26. The famous classical pianist, Kong Xiangdong, surprised his fans last week by giving a concert combining classical music with Chinese flok music. Kong explained that he tried this because he wanted to create something new. ―As a musician, playing the same music in different cities of the world is very boring,‖ says kong. He also feels that playing Chinese folk music on the piano can help bring it to the rest of the world. Music has always been part of Kong‘s world. As his mother was a great music lover, he lived with music from birth. But it wasn‘t always easy for the young Kong Xiangdong. His mother couldn’t buy him a piano until he was seven. She had to draw piano keys on a piece of paper so that he could learn to play as early as possible. The five-year-old Kong would practise on the paper piano as his mother clapped the rhythm. He was made to practise the piano so much that, at times, he thought about giving up. However, he didn‘t quit, and he became a great pianist. In 1986, at the age of 18, he became the yongest prize winner in Moscow‘s Tchaikovsky International Competition. He went on to win awards in competitions across the world. Because of Kong‘s talent and hard work, he became famous worldwide. Bur after years of performing, he felt that in some ways he had lost his identity. This is why he went back to his roots and rediscovered the beauty in Chinese folk music. He began experimenting with different styles and his Dream Tour Concert is the result. Kong’s new experiment in Chinese folk music is so improtant to him that he even changes his appeatance. When he arrived at his concert last week, he had shaved off all his hair! Since his music style was new, he decided his hairstyle had to be new too! Whether Kong is changing his appearance or transforming his music, he is a pioneer in music today. The concert last week was such a success that Kong‘s Dream Tour Concert is expected to run for the next two years in Beijing, Shanghai, and other main cities before going to Pairs and New York.

In the days of the Internet, the idea that it represented an entirely new and separate field distinct from the real world was seized upon by both supporters and critics of the new technology．Supporters liked the idea that the virtual（虚拟的） world was a placeless datasphere, liberated from constraints and restrictions of the real world, and an opportunity for a fresh start．For instance, John Perry Barlow, an internet activist, issued the "Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" in February 1996．He thundered, "Governments of the industrial world, I come from cyberspace, the new home of mind．Cyberspace does not lie within your borders．We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth． Where Mr．Barlow found the separation between the real and virtual worlds exciting, however, critics regarded it as a cause for concern．They worried that people were spending too much time online, communicating with people they had never even met in person in chat rooms, virtual game worlds and, more recently, on social - networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook．A study carried out by the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society in 2000, for example, found that heavy internet users spent less time talking to friends and family, and warned that the Internet could be "the ultimate isolating（ 隔离） technology"． Both groups were wrong, of course．The Internet has not turned out to be a thing apart．Unpleasant aspects of the real world, such as taxes, crime and cheating are now characteristics of the virtual world, too．C'amers who make real money selling swords, gold and other things in virtual game worlds may now find that the tax man wants to know about it．Designers of virtual objects in Second Life, an online virtual world, are seeking to real -world lawsuits （诉讼） in order to protect their intellectual property． At the same time, however, some of the most exciting uses of the Internet rely on combining it with the real world．Social networking allows people to stay in touch with their friends online, and plan social activities in the real world．The distinction between online and offline chatters does not matter any more．
高三秋季课程 （上） All these approaches treat the Internet as an extension or an attachment to the physical world, not a separate space．Rather than seeing the real and virtual fields as distinct and conflicting, in short, it makes sense to see them as complementary and connected． 1．According to the passage, internet supporters believed that ______． A．cyberspace liberated the real world B．the Internet; stood for progress of technology C．cyberspace can be entered by anyone for free D．the virtual world was a place without boundaries 2．Why is John Perry Barlow mentioned in Paragraph 1 ? A．To support the equality for all． B．To prove the influence of the Internet． C．To show the supporters' favor of cyberspace． D．To attack governments of Indus trial countries． 3．The passage suggests that critics of the new technology ___ _． A．worried that friends would never meet in person B．believed that the Internet could isolate people online C．worried that people would be separated from the real world D．were concerned that people were addicted to social networks 4．From the passage we can conclude that the author ______． A．argues that real and virtual worlds are not consistent B．believes the real and virtual worlds rely on each other C．agrees with both supporters and critics of the Internet D．opposes the combination of the Internet and the physical world 答案：DCCB
请根据下面提示，写一篇短文。词数不少于 50。 In your English class, the teacher shows you the following picture and asks the class to discuss it. Look at the picture carefully and tell how you understand it.
In the picture, I can see two men are trying to make a bench. Both of them are working hard, sweating a lot. But obviously they are nailing the legs on different sides. Seeing the picture, I can‘t help thinking how ridiculous it is. They work as a team and both of them do make their efforts. But unfortunately they mind their own business without communicating with each other. Cooperation needs effective communication, without which we‘ll do things blindly. So before taking actions, plan things carefully and communicate well with your partners. Otherwise all the efforts will be in vain, just like what the two men do in the picture.

The 5-year-old Kong would practise on the paper piano as his mother clapped the rhythm. He was made to practise the piano so much that, at times, he thought about giving up. However, he didn‘t quit, and he became a great pianist. In 1986, at the age of 18, he became the youngest prize winner in Moscow‘s Tchaikovsky International Competition. He went on to win awards in competitions across the world. Because of Kong’s talent and hard work, he became famous worldwide. But after years of performing, he felt that in some ways he had lost his identity. This is why he went back to this roots and rediscovered that beauty in Chinese folk music. He began experimenting with different styles and his Dream Tour Concert is the result.

3．阅读理解 Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straigh A‘s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as ―successful‖ as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father‘s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son‘s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father‘s critical air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I‘m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I‘m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was. Questions: 26. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues (问题), approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I‘m sure you would hate to lose him. Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment (分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you‘ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom. So why is he looking for a way out? He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights. The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.
高三秋季课程 （上） He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he‘s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That‘s what you want for him, too, isn‘t it? So your reporter has set me thinking. Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists---everyone--is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach their potential. If we can‘t do it, they‘ll find someone who can. 26. What does the writer think of the reporter? A. Optimistic. B. Imaginative. C. Ambitious. D. Proud.

3．阅读理解 C Thousands of people living in the Chinese capital will celebrate the start of the Chinese New year by heading for the ski resorts (滑雪场). Never mind that Beijing's dry weather seldom produces snow. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new craze(热潮）
高三秋季课程 （上） Since Beijing's first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr. Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe, In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can't really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe. Beijing's skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private (私有的) cars. This has led to the growth of a Ieisure industry in the capital's suburbs ( 郊区 ), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people, According to Mr, Wei, about 40% of the visitors to his resort come in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government Offices. The problem is making money. Starting ski resorts requires quite a lot of money; hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr. Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And. as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others hash in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job. 26. What does this text mainly talk about? A. Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars. B. Skiing as a new way of enjoying one's spare time. C. Things to be considered when starting a ski resort. D. A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing. 27. Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe? A. To visit more ski areas. C. For a large collection of ski suits. B. To ski on natural snow. D. For better services and equipment.
28. The underlined words "leisure industry" in Paragraph 3 refer to A. transport to ski resorts B. production of family cars
C. business of providing spare time enjoyments D part-time work for people living in the suburbs 29. What is the main problem in running a ski resort? A. Difficulty in hiring land. C. Price wars with other ski resorts, 4. 书面表达 假设你是李华，你的美国笔友 Peter 层表示希望来中国教书。你校现在需招聘外教，请给他写封 信，告知招聘信息。内容主要包括：

Only two countries in the advanced world provide no guarantee for paid leave from work to care for a newborn child．Last spring one at the two, Australia, gave up the bad distinction by setting up paid family leave starting in 20ll．I wasn't surprised when this didn't make the news here in the United States—we're now the only wealthy country without such a policy． The United States does have one explicit family policy, the Family and Medical Leave Act, passed in 1993．It entitles workers to as much as 12 weeks' unpaid leave for care of a newborn or dealing with a family medical problem．Despite the modesty of the benefit, the Chamber of Commerce and other business groups fought it bitterly, describing it as "government-run personnel management and a "dangerous precedent（先例） ． " In fact, every step of the way, as （usually） Democratic leaders have tried to incroduce work-family balance measures into the law, business groups have been strongly opposed． As Yale law professor Anne Alstott argues, justifying parental support depends on defining （定义） the family as a social good that in some sense, society must pay for．Parents are burdened in many ways in
高三秋季课程 （上） their lives: there is ''no exit" when it comes to children．Society expects—and needs—parents to provide their children with continuity of care．And society expects—and needs—parents to persist in their roles for 18 years, or longer if needed． While most parents do this out of love, there are public punishments for not providing care．What parents do, in other words, is of deep concern to the state, for the obvious reason, that caring for children is not only morally urgent but important to the future of society． To classify parenting as a personal choice for which there is no collective responsibility is not merely to ignore the social benefits of good parenting: really, it is to steal those benefits because they accrue （累积） to the whole of society as today's children become tomorrow's citizens．In fact, by some estimates, the value of parental investments in children, investments of time and money, is equal to 20—30% of GDP．If these investments bring huge social benefits—as they clearly do—the benefits of providing more social support for the family should be that much clearer．

Goldie's Se cret She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall. No way could I have sent her away. No way, not me anyway. Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before. "We're moving house.'; "No space for her any more with the baby coming." "We never really wanted her, but what could we have done? She was a present." People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal. And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen. I called her Goldie. If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name. She was so unsettled during those first few days. She hardly ate anything and had such an air of sadness about her. There was nothing I could do to make her happy, it seemed. Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous owner's. But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down. Always by my side, whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire. That's why it was such a shock when she pulled away from me one day when we were out for a walk. We were a long way from home, when she started barking and getting very restless. Eventually I couldn't hold her any longer and she raced off down the road towards a farmhouse in the distance as fast as she could. By the time I reached the farm I was very tired and upset with Goldie. But when I saw her licking (舔) the four puppies (幼犬) I started to feel sympathy towards them. "We didn't know what had happened to her," said the woman at the door. "I took her for a walk one day, soon after the puppies were born, and

Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine.―Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting creatures,‖William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word―habit‖carries a negative meaning.
高三秋季课程 （上） So it seems contradictory to talk about habits in the same context as innovation (创新). But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks. Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try, the more creative we become. But don‘t bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the brain, they‘re there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately press into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads. ―The first thing needed for innovation is attraction to wonder,‖says Dawna Markova, author of The Open Mind.―But we are taught inst ead to?decide‘, just as our president calls himself?the Decider‘．‖She adds, however, that―to decide is to kill off all possibilities but one. A good innovational thinker is always exploring the many other possibilities.‖ ―All of us work through problems in ways of which we‘re unaware,‖she says. Researchers in the late 1960s discovered that humans are born with the ability to approach challenges in four primary ways: analytically, procedurally, collaboratively (合作地) and innovatively. At the end of adolescence, however, the brain shuts down half of that ability, preserving only those ways of thought that have seemed most valuable during the first decade or so of life. The current emphasis on standardized testing highlights analysis and procedure, meaning that few of us use our innovative and collaborative ways of thought.―This breaks the major rule in the American belief system—that anyone can do anything,‖explains M. J. Ryan, author of the 2006 book This Year I Will…and Ms. Markova‘s business partner.―That‘s a lie that we have preserved, and it fosters commonness. Knowing what you‘re good at and doing even more of it creates excellence.‖This is where developing new habits comes in. 1．Brain researchers have discovered that A．the forming of new habits can be guided B．the development of habits can be predicted C．the regulation of old habits can be transformed D．the track of new habits can be created unconsciously 2．The underlined word―ruts‖in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to
