A fourth girl was held yesterday morning. The fire in a 19-storey building south of Paris was the third fatal blaze in the Paris area in nine days. The death toll rose to 16 after a man died late Sunday in a hospital, where seven others were being treated for serious injuries. Three teenagers taken in for questioning on Sunday admitted having started the fire for fun, police said. Two of the suspects were 18 years old, the other was 16. Further details were not available. Witnesses claimed to have seen a group of youths who lived in the building start the fire, said Patrick Seve, mayor of the town of L’HAY-LES-ROSES, near Orly airport, where the building was located. The first is believed to have broken out in the lobby (门厅) of the building before raging up a stairwell at least three floors. Some residents jumped from windows as the fire spread through the building’s entrance. Authorities were investigating possible criminals in an August 26 fire that killed 14 African children and three adults in a Paris apartment building. Three days later, another fire killed seven in a building. k*s*5u Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy suggested on French television on Sunday night that copycats (盲目模仿者) were at work. “Each time there is a new story, sometimes that gives ideas to people who then turn into criminals,” Sarkozy said, promising severe punishment for anyone found guilty of arson (纵火). 61. A. he doesn’t like to listen to new stories B. he has no time to write new stories C. teenagers often have ideas to turn into criminals D. teenagers may do the same as others have done B I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am a wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother. Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is obviously looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I, too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife? I would like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent, support myself, and if needed, support those dependent upon me. I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And while I am going to school, I want a wife to take care of my children. I want a wife to keep track of the children’s doctor. And to keep track of mine, too. I want a wife to make sure my children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children’s clothes and keep them mended. I want a wife who takes care of the children when they are sick, a wife who arranges to be around when the children need special care, because, of course, I cannot miss classes at school. My wife must arrange to lose time at work and not lose the job. It may mean a small cut in my wife’s income from time to time, but I guess I can tolerate that. Needless to say, my wife will arrange and pay for the care of the children while my wife is working. I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean. I want a wife who will keep my clothes cleaned, ironed, mended, replaced and who cooks the meals, does the necessary grocery shopping, prepares the meals, serves them pleasantly, and then does the cleaning up while I do my studying. I want a wife who will care for me when I am sick and sympathize with my pain and loss of time from school. I want a wife who will take care of the details of my social life. When my wife and I are invited out by my friends, I want a wife who will take care of the babysitting arrangements. When I meet people at school that I like and want to entertain, I want a wife who will have the house cleaned and prepare a special meal and serve it to me and my friends and will not interrupt when I talk about the things that interest me and my friends. If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one. Naturally, I will expect a fresh, new life: My wife will take the children and be only responsible for them so that I am left free. When I am through with school and have a job, I want my wife to stop working and remain at home so that my wife can more fully and completely take care of a wife’s duties. My God, who wouldn’t want a wife? 65. The writer is a _______. A. student B. man C. woman D. housewife 66. The article is written in a(n) ______ tone. D Through a series of experiments an American scientist has gained an understanding of the social structure of the most complex of ant societies. The ants examined are the only creatures other than man to have given up hunting and collecting for a completely agricultural way of life. In their underground nests they cultivate gardens on soil made from finely chopped leaves. This is a complex operation requiring considerable division of labour. The workers of this type of ants can be divided into four groups according to the size. Each of the groups performs a particular set of jobs. The making and care of the gardens and the nursing of the young ants are done by the smallest workers. Slightly larger workers are responsible for chopping up leaves to make them suitable for use in the gardens and for cleaning the nest. A third group of still larger ants do the construction work and collect fresh leaves from outside the nest. The largest are the soldier ants, responsible for defending the nest. To find out how good the various size-groups are at different tasks, the scientist measured the amount of work done by the ants against the amount of energy they used. He examined first the gathering and carrying of leaves. He selected one of the size-groups, and then measured how efficiently these ants could find leaves and run back to the nest. Then he repeated the experiment for each of the other size-groups. In this way he could see whether any group could do the job more efficiently than the group normally undertaking it. The intermediate-sized ants that normally perform this task proved to be the most efficient for their energy costs, but when the scientist examined the whole set of jobs performed by each group of ants it appeared that some sizes of worker ant were not ideally suited to the particular jobs they performed. 72. In which way are the ants different from other non-human societies? A. They do not need to search for food. B. They do not need to look for shelter. C. Individuals vary in social status. D. Individuals perform different functions. 73. It seems that smaller ants perform more of the ______. A. construction tasks B. home tasks C. defensive work D. heavy work 74. The underlined word “good” in Paragraph 3 refers to the ant’s ______. A. co-operation in working B. sense of responsibility C. efficiency in working D. willingness to work hard 75. The organization of the ants has the effect of ______. A. getting the most work done B. dividing the work up systematically C. each ant helping with all the tasks D. each ant doing what it can do best 第二节 (共 5 小题；每小题 2 分，满分 10 分)

What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning. However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I’ll also try my best to help you when necessary. Best wishes! W: No. Opera tickets cost a fortune. M: I know, but Aida is supposed to be terrific. W: We’d really like to go, but the tickets might be too expensive for us. I’ll have to call you back and let you know.

M:OK. Bye. W:Bye. Text 9 M: Hey, Ann! I haven’t seen you for a while. What’ve you been doing with yourself? W: Oh, hi, Nick. I’ve been studying a lot lately. All of my classes seem to have exams during the same week. M: Oh, that’s awful. Where are you going now? W: I’m heading to the gym. I’ve been sitting at my desk all day and I need some exercise. Do you want to walk out there with me? M: Actually, I’m on my way back from the gym. I just had swim practice and I’m going to dinner. W: Well, I guess I’ll see you around. M: Hey, why don’t we meet at the dining hall tomorrow for lunch? Maybe we’ll be able to relax and talk. W: OK. What time? M: How about one o’clock? W: Sounds great. I’ll see you there. k*s*5u Text 10 I’m a university graduate in science and I recently attended an interview in central London. The job sounds really interesting. The head of department seems to think that I’m just what they’re looking for. The thought of living in London is more appealing than my boring little town in the provinces. But the salary they want to pay me as a fresh graduate is less than I’d need to live on in London, where rents, transport and even food is more expensive than elsewhere. I live with my parents at the moment, so I thought that I could take the train to work every day but the cost is about the same as if I lived in London. You can’t win. What’s happening is that jobs for graduates in London are only open to those who already live there. The capital city will almost be another country. Who knows where all this will lead. Will we ever see the day where the rich south wants independence from the burdensome north? Who knows?
